Can free books help your sales?
First - here are a few updates/winners of a few contests I am behind on:
1) Mundie Moms Pinterest contest for Untraceable/Uncontrollable is still going on until 10/16. Huge Nature of Grace package is at stack.
2) The winner of my Nature of Grace contest for helping spread the word is Daisy at daisykr_99@yahoo.com . I will email you!
3) The winner of the 20 ebook giveaway last month - is Susan Sowers Light at books4susie@aol.com. I will email you!
Free ebook experiment
So 2 weeks before I put Uncontrollable out, I decided to put Untraceable free for 2 weeks. This takes some effort and adjusting since Amazon doesn't allow free pricing. My thinking? Maybe if I open up the readership more, it will drive up interest for Uncontrollable.
Many thought I was crazy for giving Untraceable away for free. Some thought it was a mistake, afraid it would cheapen my book. And I must admit, the thought of my book being free was horrible. My book is worth more than free. I've seen some of the books on free and I felt my value justified a higher price. But I kept telling myself it was an experiment. It was only 2 weeks. (a long 2 weeks).
This is what I tell people about marketing - sometimes you have to experiment and see what works for you. I have a couple other experiments going on so I'll update on those when I can.
So here is how it went:
Downloads:
Over 65,000 downloads on Amazon! (my goal was 25,000 so you can imagine my surprise) I was #2 in all Amazon ebooks on the free list
Over 40,000 downloads on Apple. I was #2 in all ibooks on free list just under the Ipad user guide
Under 1,000 on Kobo/Smashwords/Other combined
That's over 100,000 people that have my book in a queue. If I get a 10% conversion rate (which is high) that could be 10,000 in potential sales for Uncontrollable.
Aftermath (week after untraceable went free and uncontrollable was launched)
Over 500 reviews on Apple (I had about 20 to begin with)
about 100 emails in last week asking about the series
400 downloads for Unspeakable (free short story in the series)
increase in sales of my other books
1600 sales for Uncontrollable (actual monetary sales in a week)
1200 for Untraceable (actual monetary sales in a week) - securing my 10,000 in sales in one year goal.
This was my biggest week in sales and money yet since I published 9 months ago.
Downside
100,000 downloads I didn't make money on :( I wish!
My first 1 star review on Amazon (and it is a doosey ;) - I consider this a battle scar to be proud of.
Question of "does going free diminish the value of my book?"
Pissing off people who paid.
It doesn't work for everyone or every book. Some of it is pure luck of the draw.
It takes time to contact all the sites and they don't always pick it up.
There are thousands of books that are free so it's hard to stand out.
Lessons learned
Now, tons of people put their books for free and don't get this many downloads. Here are some tips.
Have a good cover!! Get people who don't know you to look at it. It's amazing how many self pubbed authors really think their covers are good but they are not. If your book is not selling, chances are it's your cover.
Let ebook sites know. There are many sites that post about free ebooks to their readers. I had 20,000 downloads just in the first day I submitted/contracted to about 30 ebook sites sales.
Keep it short term. Going free is a good SHORT term marketing technique where you set an end in mind. Unless you have a longer series out (over 3 books) and then maybe the first book for free would bleed into your others.
Upload directly. Make sure you upload to Apple and Kobo yourself. This gives you the freedom to control your pricing. Amazon price matches so if anyone has it free. If you are only on Smashwords, you cannot control when the price gets distributed to the sites.
Here are some other articles that discuss advantages and disadvantages of going free.

Editing - how I hate the ways..

The copyediting process nightmare is hard. I hate it. The whole process.
First of all, I am someone who needs copyediting!!! Therefore I pay for it on everything I put out.
Grammar and spelling are NOT the strongest suits of mine. Yes I said it!
Yes... I know... I am a writer and am supposed to know this stuff. It's not that I don't know grammar rules or don't know a comma slice from a dangling participle. I can point them out in other works. I just have a hard time on my own stuff.
One problem - on a writing level, I type as my character thinks so a lot of times that breaks comma rules or full sentence rules because Grace thinks in incomplete phrases. I do too. I don't know about you but I never think in complete sentences.
Secondly - I am not a great typer (this just gets worse doesn't it?) - I am a "pecker" (no laughing) so my fingers don't always go in the order I want them to.
But mostly, I just don't see them. IT's frustrating because I look. Hard. I've tried printing it out. I've tried listening on the computer (I am so not auditory). I've tried reading on computer.
Therefore I admit, editing is my weakness so I don't scrimp on editing in my process.
But it's very hard to find good people. Why? Because everyone thinks they are an editor. It takes time to find people who are good and thorough copyeditors at reasonable (not cheap) prices. Who can do it fast and do it well and are affordable. I have found a couple good ones and I have had a few bad ones to where I had to have work redone (and repay)
Why do I pay? I put aside money for covers and editing. I feel those are critical to my book's success. My books need at least 2 formal copyediting rounds. Copyeditors always make mistakes and when I edit the copyedits - I make more mistakes too.
We are all human.
I never mind when a reader sends me a couple typos to fix. I appreciate it. It's easy to fix and I'd rather fix it than leave it. But it's frustrating when you have paid for it and people think you haven't. And of course, indie authors always get hit worse than traditional authors on any kind of mistake.
Keep in mind - traditional authors have the luxury of the professional editing PROCESS. They go through many-many rounds of editing. Beta, first draft, second draft, line edits, copy edits, first pass pages, ARCs etc. And this goes through at least 2-3 different people over that time. So by the end, most of the mistakes are filtered out.
Indies don't have that luxury. Not because we don't care or because we go too fast (at least not me) but more because we can't afford to have 3 people different look at it over 6-9 months. I have several beta readers, my mom, and then 2 copyeditors. I usually do a few rounds myself but again - not my strong suit. I think because I work on the manuscript so much - the mistakes just blend in - maybe because I know the story so my eye doesn't catch them.
Here are some tips on editing:
Types of copyediting
1) Those who charge by the mistake - this is not a good option for me :)
2)Those who charge by the word - can get expensive if you are chatty in your novels.
3) Those who charge by the page.
4) Those who charge by the type - content editing vs line editing vs copyediting
How to find good ones
1) Friend referrals
2) Check out testimonials
3) BibliCrunch - matching service to pair you with a copyeditor
4) Sometimes literary agents will post lists like this one
5) Ask Indelibles - check out the resource page
Tips on editing
1) Hire a copyeditor. No matter how good your mom is or how good you think you are.
2) Be sure to get some samples pages done first to see if you like what they do
3) Know your common mistakes - every writer has them.
4) After a copyeditor goes through it. Search for mistakes that seemed common (bad one of mine is from vs. form. I type it in fast and then spell check and my eyes never find it
5) Go through their edits more than once to be sure you did not make another mistake while editing.
6) Hire a different one to do a second round. I know it costs but it's worth it.
7) Be sure they know your genre. Most will point out voice issues or consistency problems. It would help if they knew and worked with YA books.
8) Do they know Chicago Style?
Any other tips you can share?

Feed Your eReader Blog Hop: Win 20 ebooks!
Thanks for stopping by my blog during the I Am a Reader, Not a Writer's "Feed Your Reader" Blog Hop!
I'm the award-winning author of the wilderness thriller, Untraceable , Book 1 in The Nature of Grace series.
WINNER OF 2012 INDIEREADER DISCOVERY AWARD FOR YOUNG ADULT. Grace has lived in the Smokies all her life, patrolling with her forest ranger father who taught her about wildlife, tracking, and wilderness survival. When her dad goes missing on a routine patrol, Grace refuses to believe he's dead and fights the town authorities, tribal officials, and nature to find him.
One day, while out tracking clues, Grace is rescued from danger by Mo, a hot guy with an intoxicating accent and a secret. As her feelings between him and her ex-boyfriend get muddled, Grace travels deep into the wilderness to escape and find her father.
Along the way, Grace learns terrible secrets that sever relationships and lives. Soon she's enmeshed in a web of conspiracy, deception, and murder. And it's going to take a lot more than a compass and a motorcycle (named Lucifer) for this kick-butting heroine to save everything she loves.
The sequel Uncontrollable comes out Sept 24th!
