A few precious writers have a gift for writing magical, compelling stories that are fully human and at once transcendent. J. K. Rowling is one such; Amy Lignor is another.
"The Angel Chronicles" could turn out to be huge, as the way I’m drawn into the story reminds me of the first time I read Harry Potter. So many people write of celestial beings, supernatural beings, or endearing children living in fantasy worlds, but only a few lift these stories and make them soar.
One of Lignor’s secrets is her natural empathy; she feels it for her characters, hence we do, too. Another is the underlying precision of her plotting reminds me of the unseen duck feet paddling rapidly as it glides along the surface of the water. She’s an accomplished writer (an endangered species, I sometimes think), and has a vivid imagination. There’s seemingly nothing she cannot do.
Matt and Emily were raised to be a super angel warrior team who would come to earth on assignments. Whether they should defend, judge, forgive, or condemn a given person is on a case by case basis. In this story, Matt takes over the life of the complex young Daniel who has problems that would daunt even an angel. Emily becomes Liz, a girl braving life in a remote village with only her strength and wits keeping her alive.
Secrets from the past emerge and threaten to destroy everything, even the bond between Matt and Emily. In Lignor’s words, “From murder to redemption, this angel/warrior team must find a way to keep the faith they have in each other in a world that’s ripping them apart…How does one choose between the one who steals her heart and the one who steals her soul?”
