Memorial Day
I haven’t served in the military and I’m not from a military family, so the true meaning of Memorial Day is not one I’ve had to experience on a deep emotional level. I also don’t believe this particular void in my own life experience bars me fro...

A Word to the Naysayers
I’ve been engaged in a Facebook conversation with an opponent of the #WeNeedDiverseBooks campaign. Think about that. This person believes the 50%...

The stories we tell
Whenever I hear about some new study reaffirming that literature creates empathy I can’t help but roll my eyes.
I know way too many well-read jerks to believe that.
But maybe it isn’t so much about how well-read they are, but what they are reading? The stories we tell and the stories we hear are…
