Born the fourth of six children in 1955, Stuart grew up with his four brothers and one sister in a three bedroom terraced house in the West Midlands.

Early signs of intelligence and a willingness to work hard and succeed at school were rewarded with entrance to a grammar school. He was the only one of his family to achieve this status. But the going was tough, not just with his home circumstances but also with the family’s religion. Jehovah’s Witnesses did not recognise the worthiness of a good education, believing the world was going to end in 1975.
