Canadian-American bacteriologist Oswald Theodore Avery demonstrated that the genetic material, composed of deoxyribonucleic acid, transmits heritable characteristics.

This physician researched medicine. He spent the major part of his career at the hospital of Rockefeller University in city of New York. Avery of the first molecular biologists pioneered in immunochemistry, but people best know the experiment, which, published in 1944 with Colin MacLeod and Maclyn McCarty, his coworkers, isolated the makeup of genes and chromosomes.

Arne Tiselius, the laureate, said that Avery most deserved the Nobel Prize for his work but received it not despite nominations for the award throughout the 1930s, 1940s, and 1950s.
