Art director Kristen Radtke is collecting artist responses to the COVID-19 pandemic for The Believer magazine. I've been glued to the news and twitter over the last few weeks, which sends me into a spiral of negativity. Thankfully, I've found good news outside my window.
Inspired by DELIGHT by J.B. Priestley and THE BOOK OF DELIGHTS by Ross Gay, I'm starting a new series on things that bring me joy. I plan to draw these until I reach 365 panels, or until my delight runs out.
Here are some of my favorite spreads from my new picture book, WHAT COLOR IS NIGHT? It's available for purchase internationally wherever you get your books. Kudos to my editor at Chronicle Books, Ariel Richardson, for helping me land the ending with the "colors unseen" line! It's been so much fun to visit schools and share this story, and I've read it so many times to my own kids that my three-year-old has it memorized. I'm looking forward to the publication of the follow-up book WHAT SOUND IS MORNING? this Spring!
