On a shuddering breath, Isabella searched the market for any means of escape and found none. Too many people pressed close with no clear route from the area. If only she could see what was behind her, she might find a way out.

A quick glance showed even more people and cramped stalls, proving how trapped she was. The eunuch’s high-pitched shout suddenly rose above the slaver’s angry growl. Wanting away from them, she inched back. The eunuch dashed to her right, blocking her. The slaver to her left and reached for her robe.

Piercing wails filled the heated air.

Isabella stiffened. The slaver’s hand fell from her. He and the eunuch turned toward the sounds. Two dark-robed women pressed their hands to their veiled mouths. Children had stopped playing, their youthful eyes widened in wonder or fear at an aged man. His white beard trailed down his chest, and infirmity bent his tall frame, forcing him to keep his face lowered. He wore a turban and full robe, the voluminous fabric hiding the contours of his body.

Suddenly, he thrust his hand into a fire used to cook some manner of food.

Many in the crowd gasped. A young girl backed into a basket of olives, toppling it. The fruit rolled across the ground until it reached a pool of spilled honey where a black cat prowled.

The aged man kept his hand in the fire without bellowing in pain. He chose three smoking coals, tossing the hot embers from his right hand to his left much as jugglers did at fairs with brightly colored balls.

This was no fair nor was he a juggler, but a fakir, a holy man.

Isabella had heard tales of such beings who traveled the Arab territories. Fakirs had no homes or commerce, begging for food as they roamed from place to place, performing amazing feats to shock everyone, as he did now. Merchants, free women, and children waited to see what the strange man would do next.

With no one watching her, Isabella prepared to break into a run, to lose herself in the throng.

The fakir tilted his face and met her gaze.

Her heart caught. His eyes were arresting and strangely beautiful, his gaze so intent she stepped back. His expression changed. With a hard frown, he seemed to warn her to remain where she was. He turned to the eunuch and slaver, crying to them in Arabic, his voice reedy with age.

Her stomach churned. Was he warning them of her intent to flee?

When he looked back at her, raw power lit his expression, holding her to the spot.

Even if she’d wanted to move, she couldn’t now. The eunuch and slaver stared at her.

The air grew heavier than before and far too still. The slaver adjusted his weight from foot to foot as he and the eunuch spoke to the fakir. The holy man answered in kind, juggling the hot coals. He drew closer to them, his movements inefficient and tottering, no different from a babe. The slaver stepped back. The eunuch did not. His shrill voice rose in what sounded like an oath. The fakir hobbled closer, the hot coals jumping more slowly between his hands. At last he responded, his voice low.

The eunuch scowled and shouted a string of foul-sounding words. The fakir grabbed the eunuch’s throat, pressing the hot coals to it. Squealing in agony, the eunuch fell to the ground, rocking and mewling.

Frightened sounds rippled through the crowd. The holy man spoke to the spectators, who exchanged glances with each other and shuffled back.

The fakir grabbed more hot coals from another fire and staggered toward the slaver. Unlike the eunuch, the slaver offered no retort as he stepped back quickly. The fakir followed. It was a strange dance, the fakir plodding forward a step, the slaver retreating the same distance as he focused on the newest coals.

Again, Isabella realized no one noticed her. Before she could think to escape, the fakir was at her side, clutching her hair in his free hand, shouting at the others.

Again, they backed away.

He yanked Isabella toward him and whispered in Castilian, “When I release you, grasp your throat and cry out. Your freedom and life depend upon it. Do you understand?”

Her heart hammered so wildly she could barely breathe, much less think. With no time to consider why he would help her, she nodded.

The fakir shouted something to the others then brought the coals close enough for her to feel their heat. She clutched her throat and wailed.

The slaver spoke hurriedly, his words seeming to beg for mercy.

The fakir lifted the hot coals to his mouth and blew. Flames poured from his parted lips. Screams tore through the crowd with more than a few bolting.

The fakir gripped her wrist, his touch steel.

Again, he lifted the coals to his lips. Flames shot out of his mouth, which he directed to the black silk hanging on a stall. The cloth caught fire. He bolted, pulling her with him.

She struggled to keep up as they dashed through the narrow streets of the market, past stalls and startled people. Behind them, men shouted. She glanced over. Guards pursued them. The fakir ran faster, forcing her to follow. They darted down one cramped street after another. He knocked over goods deliberately. Both of them dodged buyers. Finally, he rushed into an unattended shop offering a variety of baskets.

Before she could question why this place was empty of a merchant or buyers, the fakir pushed her toward a shadowed corner near the entrance and shielded her with his body. She was so close to him her face and breasts pressed against his surprisingly muscular back. He shifted his weight. An object beneath his robe tapped her knee. She looked down at a long, thin outline hidden by the fabric. A sword?

He tightened his arms against his chest, which rippled his massive biceps.

Zoe’s lips parted at that rugged display of male prowess and his sexy-as-hell tat.

“From this moment forward, you’re working for us,” Stefin said. “Doing whatever we demand, including taking care of our carnal needs. Trust me, there are many. We call the shots, not you. We’re in command, not—”

He didn’t finish. Couldn’t actually. Flinging her hand, Zoe released a good deal of her pent-up power that she’d promised never to use again. She’d tried to be nice and where had it gotten her? Stefin saying she was going to be his office and sex slave.

Yeah, right.

With a thunderous crack and a flash of blazing light, she was suddenly outside the room while the three men were locked inside. Hopefully for good.

Constance turned into the hall and stopped mid-step, her full-length gown swishing around her legs. Its dusty-rose color matched her turban, complementing her ebony complexion. She stared at Zoe and walked slowly around her.

Looking over, Zoe turned in time with Constance until they were both moving in tight circles.

Dizzy, Zoe stopped. “What?”

Constance pointed at Zoe’s clothes.

She looked down, surprised her blouse was unbuttoned to her waist. When had that happened? One of its tails hung out of her skirt, which was unfastened and had fallen to the tops of her thighs.

Swearing beneath her breath, Zoe buttoned, zipped and smoothed her clothes until she was back to her old self, pissed and smokin’ away. Damn.

Constance regarded the treatment room. The old door was gone, replaced by a thick steel one, the kind used for a bank vault or a morgue, to keep stuff inside. Constance leaned toward Zoe. “Who, or what, is in there?”

“Jerks.”

She regarded Zoe’s outfit and then her mouth.

Zoe stepped back. Her lips felt as if they were twice their usual size from Stefin’s hard and ruthless kiss. Passion that went so deep she could still taste him on her tongue. Her pussy couldn’t have gotten any wetter, her soft folds plumper.

Tapping her finger against her cheek, Constance smiled conspiratorially. “Someone’s been bad.”

“They started it.”

“They?”

“I don’t want to talk about it.” She pivoted and strode down the hall.

Catching up, Constance grabbed Zoe’s arm and dragged her back. “Ah hon, you can’t leave them in there forever. By the way, how many are we talking about? What are they exactly? Vamps? Weres? Satyrs? Zom—”

“SOBs. Three of them, all right?”

“If you say so.” She lifted her hands. “I’ll just remove those nasty memories from you, and you’ll be as good as new.”

Zoe backed up so quickly, her ass hit the wall. She looked over at it and then back at Constance. “Don’t touch my head or one freaking memory.”

Constance gave her a knowing smile. “Wouldn’t think of it.” She dropped her hands. “Those pricks must be something if you want to remember them that badly.”

Zoe spoke through her teeth. “Even you couldn’t erase the stuff they just did.” Those memories were burned in her mind for all of eternity.

“Oh yeah?” Constance grinned. “That good, huh?”

Freaking amazing and hopeless since their lust for her wouldn’t last long. It never did with guys like that. This was about taming her, having their way. Lots of luck with that since she wasn’t playing.

“Come on,” Constance coaxed, “tell me. Maybe I can help.”

Yeah, sure—wait. Maybe she could remove their memories and they wouldn’t recall ever having been here. They could go somewhere else and bother other female demons.

Zoe smiled and then frowned at the thought of them with someone else. Finally, she sighed, knowing that was the only way to get them out of her life before they did real damage. “Okay, here’s what happened. First, he’s all over me, then they strip, then he tells me I’m here to do his bidding in bed and out like everyone died and made him the freaking ruler of Heaven, Hell and Earth. Can you imagine?”

Constance’s dark eyes sparkled with interest. “Absolutely, I’ve had fantasies like that. They’re real cavemen, huh?”

“He thought I was smoking to turn him on.”

“Well, hey, as long as he’s cute, it doesn’t matter if he’s not the brightest bulb in the pack.”

“Hey, Bub. You going to drink that beer or shall I wrap it so you can take it home?” Same old line, same old grunt of a response. Old Bub would be there till ten, down the rest of his Bud in a single swallow, and then head out into the night.

Cassie glanced across towards the window table. The young couple didn’t need anything yet. Back to her nails, hooker red and chipped. That kind of summed up how she felt right then. Cheap and worn. She liked it here at Pappy’s, but was she really going to be back in March to open up again? Was this her life now that she’d lasted more than a solitary season?

She took a cloth and gave the bar a spray and a wipe, even though it already had enough shine that she could do her face in it.

All this cleaning, it was wrecking her hands. The skin was dry. It made her feel old when she wasn’t even 25 until January. She hated this time of year, hated this sinking feeling, the Fall blues. She needed change. She needed something new.

She needed this not to be it.

Just then, with perfect timing, the door burst open, slamming against the wall as the gale took it. Standing there, framed in the doorway, was the guy Cassie would come to know as Denny McGowan.

In that tailored tux he looked like he should be someplace else entirely, but yet… it looked like he had walked here. On a night like this! His patent leather shoes were scuffed and dirty, there was mud around the cuffs of his pants; his shirt was untucked, his undone bow tie hanging loose. His jacket hung heavy with the rain, and his black hair was plastered to his skull. Maybe there had been an accident, or his car had broken down back on the highway.

Then, with a cheeky grin that cracked his face and put a sparkle in his eyes, he reached into his pocket, produced a fat roll of hundred dollar bills, and casually thumbed one free of the sodden mass of paper.

“So tell me, what does a guy have to do to get a drink around here?” he asked in an accent somewhere between Boston and genuine Irish, and then he stepped inside, pulling the door shut behind him and shutting the wild storm out.
