I love being a self-published writer. It's so easy. Compared to that is, producing traditionally manufactured products. Many years ago, I invented a way of anchoring Harley-Davidson motorcycles to the ground to stop them being stolen. It was a huge success with HD putting in a $200k 1st order and giving me $100k upfront to make sure I produced the goods. I did, of course, and was featured in their catalogue that was distributed to pretty much every country of the world. Here's a picture of my relocatable anchor with a Cobralink cable lock running through it:
Here's the smaller version. The base plate is anchored to the ground using dynabolts, when the cap is put over the top and a padlock or cable lock put through the eyelet, you can't get at the bolts.
They even sent me a special stamp to punch their logo into my product. OMG!
But for all the hoopla, I was glad to sell the company and wash my hands of all the drama.
I set up manufacturing in Australia, USA and Taiwan to try to squeeze a profit out of retail which was all a big nightmare.
As simple as that product seems, it had to be machined in one plant, hardened in another and chromed to perfection in yet another. Inventing isn't all it's cracked up to be.
Inventing stories and turning them into dots and dashes on the ethernet on the other hand, is a dream come true. Whether I sell 10 or 10 million takes the same amount of effort from me. Woo hoo. I'm into that. My stories could even continue to be reproduced and sold for another 50 years after I die with no change at all, my benefactors reaping the rewards of my work all those years later. Kids being inspired and empowered by my stories for evermore. I can dream. I love writing and I hope you do to. My Next Book's Progress
Book 9 in the Urban Hunters series has stalled and stopped.
After the release of each book, I spend a month listing it and marketing the heck out of it. There is lots to do. In the process I added a piece to a marketing strategy puzzle that I'd been developing for quite some time and all of a sudden, it started sending 300 to 500 customers to my Amazon Book Page every single day. It's amazing!
No marketing method I have ever tried has been such a massive success. And the amazing thing is that anyone can do it. A complete newbie with their first book could walk right over the top of well established authors. So I'm writing a How To book. I'm loathe to interrupt my Urban Hunters series but this is just too big to ignore. I'm actually nearly finished it. In fact next month's newsletter just might come a little early with the announcement so stay tuned. Hunting and Fishing Trip
I'm so excited, I just bought myself some Barraumundi lures. Now I know many of you won't know what on earth a Barramundi lure is but let me tell you, it's big. Our Australian emblem shows an emu and a kangaroo, some say it should show the Barramundi. It's that iconic here in the land down under. A Barramundi is a fish, but it's not just any old fish, it's amazing. It can grow to over a metre in four years and the fillets are to die for. But that's not what I'm interested in. What I'm after is the fight. I love a good fight. I respect a feisty opponent and a Barramundi is one hell of an opponent.
I wonder what I'll do with my first one, cook him and eat him or let him go. It depends on a lot really. Who I'm with and how hungry we all are. We will, after all, be in one of the remotest parts of the world, living off the land, apart from our stock of canned spaghetti. All I know at this point in time is I'm stoked to have a couple of Barramundi lures in my living room. I'm shaking them about, listening to the enticing noise they make and practicing my knots. If he's on, he ain't getting away!

Bit of feedback from Andrew in the UK. Remember I thought he might be 11, but I wasn't sure because he keeps changing every year? Turns out he turned 12 in February. Happy Birthday, Andrew. His mum Wendy said, "Andrew got very excited at the thought of a movie, in fact he did a bit of a dance round the living room!"
I often think of Andrew when I write some of my scenes. He likes the details. My editors often tell me there's a bit much detail in some scenes and my wife tells me she tends to phase out a bit in those parts. Well I've always maintained that if I was reading it, I'd like those details, as I know Andrew would. So I try not to get too heavy on the details while putting in just enough for Andrew. So thanks for the inspiration, Andrew.
They say when you write, you should picture your audience right there in front of you. You've joined my nieces and nephews in the audience, Andrew ;) Glad to have you on board.
Update on Andrew from his proud mum, Wendy. He just won silver for kickboxing drills at MF northern championships. I've never met Andrew but I feel proud of him. Good onya, mate. News
It's been a big month- I turned 50! I can hardly believe it. Not sure how I feel about it. Not sure how it happened.
All my First Edition First Print run copies of Final Straw sold out in short order. Thank you to everyone who bought them and thank you for all your kind words.
And you'll be happy to know that I worked out how to use the spellchecker for my newsletters :) Book Reviewers

Would you like to join my crew of editors? I'm always looking for fresh perspectives on my stories so if you'd like to volunteer, shoot me an email. Book 9 will be ready for your critique sometime over the next couple of months. Welcome
Thanks for your company in this edition and welcome to all the new subscribers. The little MailChimp monkey sends me an email message each time a new subscriber joins us so I've been getting lots of nice little messages popping up on my screen as I write.
As always, don't forget to head on over to my Bunya Publishing site to grab a book for yourself or a friend. I'll be putting up a pre-order button for the new How To book at some stage so get ready for it if you want one.
Catcha next time.

Thanks for your company in this edition and welcome to all the new subscribers. The little MailChimp monkey sends me an email message each time a new subscriber joins us so I've been getting lots of nice little messages popping up on my screen as I write.

OMG!
But for all the hoopla, I was glad to sell the company and wash my hands of all the drama.I set up manufacturing in Australia, USA and Taiwan to try to squeeze a profit out of retail which was all a big nightmare.

Print books have finally arrived! Woo hoo. I spent the day kicking back reading my own book yesterday. Life can be pretty strange sometimes. Loved it. I was even shocked in the end and I knew what was going to happen. So anyway, do you know what this means to you?
SIGNED, FIRST EDITION, FIRST PRINT RUN
INVESTMENT BOOKSBuy now here. Some organised fans have pre-ordered FINAL STRAW but there are still a few left if you want to grab a copy for yourself or a friend today.
Did you know that JK Rowling's first editions were selling for $35,000 at one stage! Now I'm sure my books will never be that hot, but considering we're also turning this series into movies, I'm sure they'll go up in value.
As a newsletter subscriber, you are the first to hear of these investment copies becoming available so if you want one, order it now because I'll be letting everyone else know tomorrow.
My Next Book's ProgressBook 9 is up and running. I'm upto chapter 13 which for Amber, is not going very well at all. She's enduring her most embarassing moment ever. A moment she'll wish she could forget. A moment three lifetimes won't be enough to rid herself of this memory. Hehehe. I love being a writer.
So 13 chapters brings me to about 11,500 words, which in this case is about half way through the book. I really thought I'd be much further along in the story by this stage but I've been having so much fun with the characters that it's gone on a lot longer than expected. More for you to read so I'm sure you won't mind. New Newsletter LayoutDo you like the new newsletter layout? I'm doing it through Mailchimp which is really easy to use. Looks just like my blog and website so I'm pretty stoked about that. Hunting TripLooks like we might be onto a property that's having a problem with buffalos. Woo hoo. Thought we were going to miss out on hunting buffalo simply because most places charge you thousands to shoot them. I'm not into that but I don't mind helping out a mate with a feral problem so here we come.
More on that later. In the mean time, our hunting rig is coming along nicely.
Mechanically, everything's done. It's a go anywhere rig that won't let us down. So now that that's sorted, we're up to the storage compartment. We're welding in the framework, bending it to shape and adding some alloy checkerplate to finish it off.
Looking pretty spiffy I reckon. Got a nice sized fridge going on, a platform to sleep on with plenty of storage underneath. Not that we'll be sleeping in it, we've got tents and swags for that.
Fitness- had a few workouts and walks. Nowhere near enough though so I'm stepping up the routine.
Wearing my new boots in too. They're moulding to my feet and my feet are getting used to them. Pretty stoked about them. It's so important to have good boots on a trip like this which is why I'm making a big deal of them. Here's a pic.
Check out that zipper, it turns them into slip-ons. Really cool.
Videos of the trip will be coming your way too. Got the camera sorted so you can expect to catch the action in the comfort of your living room. Stay tuned.
Countdown clock: 120 days FeedbackGot some feedback from one of my favourite fans, Andrew from the UK. He's 11 now if memory serves me correctly. He changes every year so it's hard to keep up. He read Final Straw overnight and loved the shootting scenes the most. His mum, Wendy, said it should be a movie. It will be, Wendy, you can be sure of that.
Ann, also from the UK but in her Granny years, said it was a masterpiece, and a must read. Seems a bit much for the likes of me but I'll take it. Thanks, Ann. Book ReviewersWould you like to review any of my eBooks? Hit the email link below if you would and I'll shoot you a copy today. EditorsWould you like to join my crew of editors? I'm always looking for fresh perspectives on my stories so if you'd like to volunteer, shoot me an email. Book 9 will be ready for your critique sometime over the next couple of months. NewsI was really excited to get an order this week for a full set of books from Larissa. She's from a remote Aboriginal mission library in far north Queensland. And when I say remote, I really mean remote. They are so far off the beaten track and isolated that the community will be really excited by these books.
And in other news, more and more schools are buying full sets of my books for all of their students to use as part of the curriculum. They tell me it's a fun way for the kids to learn about Aboriginal customs and traditions. Some of the teachers read the books aloud while others have class discussions about them. I'm really proud of that. I'm madly trying to put together some study guides and crossword puzzles to help them.
Easter was glorious in Forster for a change. It's usually raining cats and dogs but this year was perfect. We even hit the boat for a swim. Signing OffThat's all I've got for this edition. Hope you enjoyed it. Don't forget to head on over to my Bunya Publishing site to grab a book for yourself or a friend. Those first editions won't last long so if you want one, be quick.
Catcha next time.

Print books have finally arrived! Woo hoo. I spent the day kicking back reading my own book yesterday. Life can be pretty strange sometimes. Loved it. I was even shocked in the end and I knew what was going to happen. So anyway, do you know what this means to you?

Stay tuned.

Wild Ride
What a wild ride FINAL STRAW has been. It’s actually two books in one. Thought I was done and dusted months ago when inspiration struck- combine the two. Glad I did. It’s come up great and Amber’s story is so much more powerful now. I’ve been building up to Amber’s Story ever since Billy met her that fateful night in the rat-infested alley. Been hinting about her past the whole time with snippets here and hints there.
It’s different to how I was originally going to write her story. Originally I was going to give you a few of Billy’s chapters and a few of Amber’s, building up to when they met in the alley. But I realised how much more powerful Amber’s story would be if I built up to it gradually, building intrigue over several books. Five, as it turned out.
My wife, Karin, was so taken with the story that it had her in tears. That was no mean feat I can tell you now. We’ve been together for over 25 years and I’ve only ever seen her tear-up over a TV show a couple of times. Needless to say, it got the stamp of approval from her. Here she is in happier times:

It was all so perfect, until the dark side of life paid Amber a visit. Now all she’s got is a bloodied pair of pink pyjamas and a cardboard box down a rat–infested alley.
Amber comes face to face with a cruel murderer in the bush. She must decide — kill him now or later?
And remain a victim at the hands of her mother, or fight for a life of her own?
“I would read ANYTHING this man wrote.” NEW YORK BOOK REVIEW, W. D LaRue
“Masterpiece. A must read.” Anne Cook, UK
“Real and frightening. Great build–up!” Marie, UK
“Gripping!” Ethan, USA
“Surprising climax. Great ending!” Anne, Australia
URBAN HUNTERS is storytelling at its best. Unlike anything you’ve ever read, in typical Taaffe fashion. Always surprising. Wonderful!

FINAL STRAW Pre-release Review- "Masterpiece"
5 Star Amazon Book Review by Ann Cook, UKMasterpiece Gaz. The story of Amber so different to Billy's story and I have waited a long time for this edition to be published.
This is about Amber and how she came to end up in the cardboard box. Then Billy finds her and it is the start of a wonderful friendship and the escapades they get up to,life in Australia and the exciting things that can happen
It is a story of a little girls happiness turning to sadness then turning back to happiness then sadness again?
It is about the exciting life Amber leads up to her being twleve and the fate that life leaves her with. She is an exceptional character and I have loved reading about her and her father as she is her fathers daughter. It is about the things she is taught in life of how to survive in a way like Billy's family taught him.
I can't say too much as it would give the story away but it is a must read and worth every penny. Gaz has put a lot of time and effort into this book with research and maybe part of his life. I would also like to make a comment on the front cover which I love and think is the best yet.
*****
Thank you so much for your kind words, Ann. I can't tell you how happy I am that you liked Amber's story. And I love the fact that you got that two kids from completely different worlds can experience the same things. Like Aboriginal Billy living as Aborigines have for many tens of thousands of years in the bush and Amber, a blue eyed blonde city girl. This is what this series is all about- we are all the same, we are all trying to make our way, and we all have to find a way to do it together.
