Dr. Paul Wilhelm Massing was a sociologist.

Massing studied economics and social sciences at Frankfurt University. He received his M.B.A. from Cologne Handelshochschule in 1926 and his Ph.D. from Frankfurt University in 1928.

Massing began his career at the International Agrarian Institute in Moscow. He returned to Germany in 1931 and joined the Communist Party of Germany, for which he was arrested in 1933. He wrote about his imprisonment in his autobiographic novel "Schutzhäftling 880," which was published in 1935 under the pseudonym Karl Billinger.

Massing and his wife moved to Pennsylvania. In 1942, he joined the Institute of Social Research at Columbia University in New York. In 1948 he began teaching political sociology at Rutgers Univers
