Jason Statham in Prime Video: The John Wick-Style Beekeeper

Jason Statham is the kind of actorwhose mere presence defines the entire movie – or perhaps it’s that these productions, crafted specifically for him, can only truly be brought to life by him. Thus, The Beekeeper emerges as a film made by and for Jason Statham, where he once again slips into his signature role to do what he does best: demolish everything in sight, be it through kicks, gasoline barrels, or any object within reach.

The aim is simple: to entertain and to amuse, asking little from the viewer other than to enjoy a Jason Statham spectacle.

The BeekeeperThe BeekeeperPlot Overview

A woman falls victim to a scam and ends up taking her own life, unluckily on the property of a beekeeper who, coincidentally, is Jason Statham. Statham’s character has a unique way of dispensing justice: torching the offenders’ business. What follows is a series of angered responses, escalating vengeance, and eventually, the bad guys attempting to retaliate by targeting his bees, sparking chaos.

About the Film

Entertaining and fun. If such movies aren’t your cup of tea, then you might want to pass, as it might seem like yet another replica of its predecessors – with a plot lacking realism and prioritizing one action scene after another.

Featuring Jeremy Irons in a role as a former CIA director gone rogue, orchestrating evil behind the scenes (or more accurately, his son causes the main havoc). The role doesn’t allow for much range beyond Irons’ physicality and commanding presence. The rest of the film showcases Statham as a John Wick-like figure, this time fueled by vengeance for his bees.

It shares the same sense of justice but lacks the aesthetic finesse of the film led by Keanu Reeves. The Beekeeper is reminiscent of those fun but formulaic ’80s action flicks, so similar that they blend into one another in memory.

The Beekeeper may not be memorable in the traditional sense, but it excels at providing pure entertainment and embraces its unabashedly foolish charm without pretense.

Did anyone really expect Jason Statham to sit idle without engaging in a brawl? It seems battling is what this actor knows best, and he doesn’t disappoint in delivering more of what fans love.

Hack Your Health: The Secrets of Your Gut: A Netflix Documentary Takes You on an Exciting Journey Through the Microbiome

Netflix dives back into one of its cherished themes: health. This time, it’s with a twist that’s both entertaining and educational, inviting viewers on an exploratory voyage into the gut to enhance understanding, promote healthier eating, and ultimately, improve overall well-being.

Hack Your Health: The Secrets of Your Gut presents itself as a lighthearted documentary brimming with animations, seemingly tailor-made for young audiences at first glance. It offers straightforward, amusing explanations and introduces friendly characters to guide this intestinal adventure.

The film is an enjoyable watch that provides insights into the activities beneath our skin – explaining why we feel good or bad and how so much of it hinges on that seemingly troublesome part of our body: the intestine, and its most intriguing inhabitants – the microorganisms that constitute the microbiome.

Hack Your Health: The Secrets of Your GutHack Your Health: The Secrets of Your GutThe Microbiome Explored

The microbiome consists of a community of fungi, bacteria, and even viruses that, though invisible to the naked eye, play a pivotal role in digestion. Everyone harbors a unique microbiome, influenced by individual health, genetics, lifestyle choices, and more, which affects how it interacts with our diet.

In Hack Your Health: The Secrets of Your Gut, viewers are introduced to the latest microbiome research, the impact of processed foods loaded with sugars and other substances, altering the microbiome and often leading to adverse reactions.

About the Documentary

While not explicitly aimed at children, Hack Your Health: The Secrets of Your Gut captivates with its straightforward and playful explanations designed for an adult audience grappling with the dietary challenges of adulthood. It’s akin to relearning how to eat, using a childlike approach because, deep down, many of us neglected those nutrition lessons growing up, requiring a refresher course in our older years.

What adds to Hack Your Health: The Secrets of Your Gut’s charm are the guests – individuals showcased as case studies who face various dietary challenges (including a humorous highlight of a man who competes in hot dog eating contests). There’s also a gothic chef and a woman struggling with weight loss.

And what’s the common thread among them? A somewhat unruly microbiome.

This documentary doesn’t dramatize poor dietary habits; instead, it approaches the topic with humor. Despite imparting a nutrition lesson, it avoids scolding, opting for a smile and encouragement to do better.

Our Take

Hack Your Health: The Secrets of Your Gut stands out as a didactic documentary on Netflix for those curious about the inner workings of the gut and seeking ways to support its health.

And after all, who doesn’t want to feel better?

Goodbye Earth: A Korean Series on the End of the World and the Human Spirit

Goodbye Earth poses a thought-provoking question: What would you do if you had only 200 days left to live? Asteroid Dina is hurtling toward Earth with lethal certainty, and its chosen point of impact is South Korea. While some residents manage to flee, the government has enacted evacuation plans, but not everyone can be saved. This leaves some to face the daunting choice of how to spend their final 200 days.

The series kicks off with a bang, featuring high-quality CGI that includes dinosaurs racing away—a nod to the asteroid that also sealed their fate.

Following the spectacle, there’s a shift to tranquility, emphasizing that Goodbye Earth is a profoundly human story, grounded in emotion, character, and the stark realities within a dwindling hope, yet where smiles still find a way to shine through.

This heartwarming series places the human existence at its core, brimming with hope and faith in humanity.

About the Series Goodbye Earth

Reminiscent of “Don’t Look Up” (2021), starring Leonardo DiCaprio, and the apocalyptic theme of an asteroid threatening Earth, Goodbye Earth unfolds a similar tale—yet asks, what if you only had 200 days of life remaining? Far from a comedy, the series leans more towards the humanistic essence of “Deep Impact” (1998), focusing less on parody and more on the human element. Instead of dazzling special effects, it offers viewers something unexpected, achieving a unique blend of originality in its premise and intent.

Woven through various interlinked narratives is a common thread: unyielding faith in humanity and the determination to persevere.

Perspectives

Goodbye Earth also explores diverse viewpoints on a global tragedy, touching on governmental, military, and logistical aspects. It scrutinizes crisis management yet never strays from its central narrative—the people, their emotions, and the underlying belief that, despite life’s end, the will to continue endures.

The series also integrates religious themes without being preachy or didactic.

It introduces elements of a thriller in one of its storylines and confronts the theme of denialism, a relevant issue even in this fictional context.

Our Take

A beautifully poignant series, Goodbye Earth excels in pacing and performances. It’s a narrative that invites viewers to immerse themselves in a story of profound faith in humanity.

For those drawn to sentimental storytelling, it’s a perfect watch.

The Asunta Case: Netflix’s Riveting Series on a 2013 Child Murder Mystery

Once again, Netflix dares to push the boundaries, this time taking on the judicial realms of a country to narrate a saga shrouded in ambiguity. Following the scrutiny of Rosa Peral’s case, Netflix now ventures into the “The Asunta Case” series, depicting a harrowing crime previously explored through documentaries on the same platform.

This series merits attention for its unsettling, violent, and shocking narrative, where the tragic death of a young girl takes center stage. Stellar performances by Candela Peña and Tristán Ulloa, playing the bereaved parents, amplify the story’s emotional depth.

The Asunta CaseThe Asunta CaseBackdrop

On September 21, 2013, the lifeless body of an adopted Chinese girl was discovered, igniting an investigation that pointed towards her adoptive parents, Rosario and Alfonso. This tale, rooted in a notorious crime from Galicia, Spain, continues to stir controversy and intrigue.

Series Insights

What sets “The Asunta Case” apart is its forensic reconstruction of the crime, detailed analysis, and adherence to the voluminous police records and case documentation. The series aims for realism, carefully avoiding dramatization to uphold the credibility of the recounted events.

Script and Performance

The script is tightly woven, accurately reflecting the events and underlining the series’ intent to dissect a brutal murder with surgical precision, devoid of unnecessary drama. Candela Peña delivers an arresting portrayal of Rosario, capturing the character’s chilling detachment as reported by law enforcement. Tristán Ulloa provides a subdued yet potent performance, complemented by Carlos Blanco and María León, who excel in their roles as detectives, showcasing versatility and professionalism.

The Asunta CaseThe Asunta CaseControversy and Conclusions

“The Asunta Case” dives into a well-publicized murder case, where Rosario Porto’s death in prison adds layers to the narrative, while Alfonso maintains his innocence. Netflix and the creators present a clear version of events, grounded in evidence, presenting a definitive recount of the tragedy, based on rigorously reconstructed scenes.

Our Take

More than just the recounting of a gruesome tale, “The Asunta Case” stands out for its cold, merciless approach to storytelling. Through meticulous forensic investigation, it explores the murky details of a case that captivated media attention, now set to reach a global audience through Netflix. The series’ depiction of the events offers a stark, unflinching look at a case that remains as unsettling as it is captivating.

Breaking Barriers: Talley Dunn Gallery Welcomes Tina Medina’s Multidimensional Art Representing Underrepresented Voices in American History

Talley Dunn Gallery is honored to announce the representation of Tina Medina. Through an exploration of fibers, painting, video, and audio, Medina’s art reflects U.S. American history from the point of view of the underrepresented voices in our communities such as people of color, farmworkers, the undocumented and women and children. In her mixed media works, Medina explores juxtapositions of history with cultural symbols to reflect the narratives of those whose stories are rarely told.

Many of my works contemplate the contributions of black and brown families to the cultivation of the lands, economies, and culture of the United States whose physical hard labor of the past and present continues to be overlooked as major contributors to the success of this country. My works are part social justice activism and part ritual, reviving an ancestral and maternal instinct to hold the family in reverence and to raise awareness for human rights.

Tina Medina
Tina MedinaXicana Bandera (Soy de Tejas), 2022, Flags, thread, 60h x 33w inches

As a U.S.-American-born woman of Mexican ancestry, Medina embraces the theory of Xicanisma, a concept that recognizes the indigenous roots of Chicana identity. Her artwork explores displacement and identity informed by a lost connection to her indigenous ancestry, cultural traditions, and family history.

Medina’s art has been exhibited nationally in exhibits such as Immigration, Migration, Movement & The Humanities at Arizona State University, as well as Strive: An Exhibition Highlighting American Immigration & the American Dream, D’Art Center, Norfolk, Virginia. In 2021, her work was featured in Arte Latino Now 2021, a virtual exhibit for the Center for Latino Studies at Queens University Charlotte in North Carolina, and Medina was the Changarrito Artist of the Month for Mexic-Arte Museum in Austin, Texas. In 2022, she created a community-based solo art exhibit at Arts Mission Oak Cliff followed by a solo retrospective exhibition at the Latino Cultural Center of Dallas. Most recently, Medina was selected to participate in Soy de Tejas, a statewide survey of Latinx art in San Antonio, Texas and now on view in Fort Worth, Texas.

Tina Medina is an artist, educator, and curator living in Dallas, Texas. Originally from West Texas, Medina earned her Bachelor of Fine Arts degree at Texas Tech University and Master of Fine Arts degree at the University of North Texas. Over the past two decades, Medina has been an active leader within the North Texas art community and beyond. She has curated over a dozen exhibitions, and she has participated in numerous lectures, panel discussions, and art jury panels throughout the region. In 2021, Medina co-founded Nuestra Artist Collective and in 2022 collaboratively organized, curated, and exhibited work with nine other Texas women artists in an art exhibit focusing on the U.S. Mexico border. Additionally, Medina has been a member of the oldest artist-run co-op in Texas, 500X Gallery, and she has served on the City of Dallas Public Art Committee. In 2022, Medina was awarded a Nasher Sculpture Center Artist Grant.

‘THEM: The Scare’ Series on Amazon Prime Video: A Bone-Chilling Thriller Series with a Psychopath in the 90s

Them: The Scare is a series starring Deborah Ayorinde, Luke James, Jeremy Bobb, and Joshua J. Williams.

Making its eerie return in 2021, “THEM” comes back for a gripping second season titled “The Scare”. This horror series, reminiscent of the chilling vibes of “American Horror Story”, transports us to Los Angeles, unraveling a mysterious and gruesome series of multiple murders intertwined with a sinister psychopath and a determined detective on a mission to catch the killer.

For those who crave horror that’s intricately crafted, taking its time to unfold surprises, THEM: The Scare delivers everything you’re searching for. With sharply defined characters and a series of disturbing murders set against a menacing backdrop, this show is a delight for horror genre aficionados.

Plot

In Los Angeles, a string of murders unfolds, all linked to a foster home. Detective Dawn Reeve takes on the case, gradually becoming deeply involved. She uncovers a turbulent tale leading to a psychotic character obsessed with real-life psychopaths, aspiring to portray them in films.

Them: The ScareThem: The ScareAbout the Series

Like AHS, each season of THEM: The Scare narrates a standalone story. This season takes us to Los Angeles, set against the tumultuous backdrop of the 90s — marked by crime, drugs, and a pervasive racist atmosphere. THEM: The Scare paints a vivid picture of the city during those times. Yet, at its core, it remains a spine-tingling horror series that, with its slow and deliberate pacing, draws viewers into a sinister and mysterious narrative.

Leading the cast is Deborah Ayorinde as the detective and mother of a troubled teenage son. Her compelling performance not only enhances her career but also brings depth to a well-rounded and meticulously crafted character, proving that even in a horror series, complex characters can thrive.

However, Luke James, portraying the villain, stands out with his performance, pushing his role to the brink and inviting viewers into the mind of an unhinged psychopath who can recite Charles Manson like scripture.

THEM: The Scare masterfully integrates various nuances, particularly in terms of social realism and critique, while also serving as an exceptional piece of horror, becoming a worthy successor of AHS. It maintains its eerie essence throughout, with a leisurely pace, setting up each shocking moment with precision and understanding exactly what to reveal and when, without reducing the series to a blood-filled horror spectacle.

The true horror in THEM: The Scare is more internal, a kind of terror that is bone-chilling and psychological. For horror enthusiasts, it promises to be one of the standout horror series of 2024.

Prepare for a truly terrifying experience.

Paul Hunter Speagle: “The Speagle’s” – JPS Gallery, Hong Kong

When you think of ‘family’, what comes to mind? Perhaps it is the gingerbread house your family built last Christmas or the comforting embrace of your spouse after a long day at work. American artist Paul Hunter Speagle is set to make a triumphant return to Hong Kong with a new solo exhibition titled The Speagle’s. This unique showcase invites you to enter the artist’s home and meet his endearing family. In a refreshing departure from the ‘perfect family’ facade we often see, Speagle presents a realistic and unfiltered portrayal of the daily encounters within his home. These

are experiences that many of us can relate to yet purposely keep hidden from the public eye. Whether it is family disputes or the rising pile of kitchen table bills, this exhibition serves as a beacon of truth and clarity in a world of idealised depictions of family life.

The exhibition unfolds in three stages, each a pivotal phase in the artist’s journey to bringing this unique experience to life. Inspired by his wife’s advice to “paint your life and us,” visitors will first step foot in a room adorned with trinkets of love and objects that hold special meaning to the Speagle family. The next room will be the artist’s studio, a space where visitors can witness how Speagle’s creations not only encapsulate the memories he shares with his family but serve as a means for him to navigate life’s complexities in his pursuit of self-growth, a journey that we all can learn from and be inspired by.

Paul Hunter SpeaglePaul Hunter Speagle’s artist studio in North Carolina, USA. Courtesy of the artist and JPS Gallery.

The final room will feature the artist’s personal home videos and newly painted large-scale paintings, including one that spans over eight meters wide, a monumental piece that stands as the largest painting the gallery has ever exhibited. These large-scale paintings beautifully capture the multifaceted nature of life, from moments of pure joy to trials and tribulations. They serve as a reminder of the delicate balance between public facade and private authenticity in family life. Through his art, Speagle invites viewers to cherish family bonds and embrace the hope for brighter moments, even in the face of adversity.

Throughout his career, Speagle’s creations have always been a reflection of his unending pursuit of growth, both in his craft and as an individual in society. By examining his relationship with the world around him, be it religion, politics, or family, every inch of every painting in this exhibition serves as an honest window into the Speagle family’s daily life. These relatable moments between family members, from intriguing conversations with their daughter to moments of passion between

husband and wife, these paintings are a canvas of introspection, personal catharsis, and a testament to the artist’s effort to become a better parent. While there is no definitive guidebook on how to be the perfect parent, husband, or artist, Speagle hopes this exhibition will shed light on the challenges and provide solutions to fellow travellers on the winding road of parenthood. So, take a seat in the Speagle’s home, and you might learn a few family traditions you will want to introduce to your own home.

Dead Boy Detectives – Series on Netflix: Neil Gaiman Straddling the Ancient and the Modern

Dead Boy Detectives is a series created by Neil Gaiman and Matt Wagner. It stars George Rexstrew, Jayden Revri, Kassius Nelson and Lukas Gage.

Imagine a vibrant, stylish, and youthful concoction that blends the intrigue of Sherlock Holmes with spirits, possessions, and an abundance of comedy. This series, based on characters by Neil Gaiman and featuring the author himself as an executive producer, promises to be Netflix’s next big hit among the youth audience. No expense was spared for one of the network’s brightest stars (Gaiman) in adapting his brilliant story into a series that marries a modern aesthetic, narrative, and execution to perfection.

Utterly entertaining.

Dead Boy DetectivesDead Boy DetectivesPlot

Edwin Payne and Charles Rowland helm a detective agency that tackles extraordinary cases because they, too, are extraordinary—being ghosts, they solve mysteries in this world. Their investigations take on a new complexity when a medium named Crystal Palace joins their team.

About the Series

With its elegant and meticulously crafted visuals, this series has everything to appeal to younger viewers. It balances the spirit of traditional elements through Edwin and juxtaposes them with Charles and Crystal, who add a contemporary flair. Visually, the series is a blend of gothic elements like graveyards and a decadent ambiance with the modernity of the internet age, sticking firmly, however, to an otherworldly aesthetic.

More a comedy than an action series, it carries the aesthetic genius of comic legend Neil Gaiman, backed by all means for a high-quality production. Netflix pulls out all the stops for Gaiman once again, following the successful bet on “The Sandman,” which became a favorite among audiences and critics alike (with eager anticipation for its second season).

“Dead Boy Detectives” may be less profound and philosophical but is infinitely more refreshing, fun, and carefree. It doesn’t aspire to epic status, focusing instead on its comedic tone and the three characters who invariably infuse scenes and cases with humor.

The script excels in its entertaining dialogue more than in character creation. Yet, what truly stands out is its visual aspect, sure to please fans of Gaiman’s work and capturing the cheeky spirit of his characters in imagery: a modern take on Sherlock Holmes’ aesthetic, filled with spirits, yet retaining the essence of literary romanticism brimming with graveyards and tormented souls.

The series showcases a refreshing approach to rhythm and editing. Scenes feature rapid cuts, some lasting only minutes, with a continuous shift in shots that are meticulously and tenderly crafted.

A visually stunning work, “Dead Boy Detectives” is lively, modern, and aims to become a massive success among the younger demographic.

We’re betting on it.
