Isabella Watling: Portraits
Classically-trained portrait artist Isabella Watling has just been awarded the second prize in the National Portrait Gallery’s prestigious Herbert Smith Freehills Portrait Award 2024. Her portrait titled Zizi (2023) was selected from 1,647 entries and will be showcased among the top fifty portraits on display.
This highly competitive Award, which has returned for its forty-second year, is one of the most important platforms for portrait painters and among one of the largest for any global art competition. Being awarded second place, Isabella Watling will receive £12,000.

To celebrate this achievement, Isabella Watling will open an exclusive studio exhibition this September as she invites viewers into the heart of her creative process with a rare, behind-the-scenes look at her studio—a place where her acclaimed works come to life.
Fusing together the timelessness of old master paintings with the contemporary allure of high fashion, her upcoming portrait exhibition features twenty-five quietly powerful and emotive oil paintings. All painted from life using a traditional sight-size technique, Isabella Watling: Portraits features a selection of women and men in beautifully crafted dresses and garments which juxtapose with the classical beauty achieved in the delicate handling of subtle shadows, rich textures and earthy colour palette.
One of Britain’s leading portrait artists, Isabella Watling’s artistic journey unfolded at the age of 18 at the esteemed Charles H. Cecil Studios in Florence. With a focus on portrait and figure painting, she immersed herself in the rich history of Florence’s art scene and took inspiration from the classical painting techniques. Inspired by the likes of Titian, Velazquez, Van Dyck and John Singer Sargent, her art serves as a continuation of this esteemed tradition, breathing new life into classical portraiture.

As she continues to navigate the dynamic landscape of the art world, Isabella Watling remains committed to preserving the tradition of portraiture while infusing it with her own unique perspective and style. Her portraits and their vibrant life-like quality and intricate depiction of fabrics, are a testament to her rigorous training in sight-size portraiture—a technique that preserves the vitality and scale of life under natural light, capturing the essence and subtle nuances of character from her subjects.
Her approach to portraiture is meticulous, emphasising the capture of her subjects’ character and presence. Firmly believing in the power of painting from life, Isabella Watling works exclusively in oils, under natural light, and directly from the sitter. This methodical process demands significant time investment, with at least five sittings required for a head and shoulders portrait, and up to ten for a full-length depiction.
Isabella Watling comments: “After a decade of creating in London, it felt right to open my studio and share some personal works alongside commissioned portraits, which are seldom seen by the public. Visitors will experience an array of my works, from intimate busts to commanding full-length pieces, all painted from life. It’s hard to get a true impression of the work from a photograph, so I am really excited for people to come and see the work and the studio that a lot of it was painted in. A lot of my work is done to commission so this will be a chance to showcase some portraits that I have painted for myself”.
Join Isabella Watling this September for an intimate glimpse into the art and soul of contemporary portraiture at her exclusive studio showcase. More details to be announced.

“Black Lotus” – A Prime Video Thriller Starring Frank Grillo
“Black Lotus” is a thriller written and directed by Todor Chapkanov starring Rico Verhoeven and Frank Grillo.
“Black Lotus”, a thriller movie that perfectly captures the essence of bold heroes, malevolent villains, and the twisted world of crime and terror. The film is a non-stop ride filled with soldiers, ruthless crimes, terrorism, and a continuous show of firepower. This genre, even though it may seem somewhat overplayed due to repetitive plotlines and predictable sequences, continues to captivate a loyal fanbase.
The main draw of “Black Lotus” is undoubtedly Frank Grillo. Famous for his chameleon-like ability to eliminate boundaries between himself and his characters, he takes on the role of a highly malevolent villain.

The story revolves around Matteo, an ex-soldier who returns to Amsterdam only to become entangled in a kidnapping. The victim? The daughter of a dear friend who tragically lost his life on a previous mission.
About the Film:Have we seen better films? Absolutely. More original plots? Yes, they exist. Films with a more humorous touch? Definitely. However, “Black Lotus” has a unique virtue: it delivers exactly what it sets out to promise – a high-stakes action film about ex-soldiers braving a world rampant with organized crime and despicable villains hell-bent on accumulating wealth.
The protagonist’s introduction is almost cliché yet familiar – a shirtless man lifting heavy logs – a scene that “Black Lotus” unabashedly employs to the tee. Although the film is packed with clichés and a rapid pace that’s somewhat worn due to overuse, it manages to strike a chord with fans of the genre. It would have effortlessly fit into the action film roster of the eighties, but thirty years on, it does seem a bit spent.
Our Opinion:Unfortunately, given the current standard of American cinema, we find it difficult to recommend. Lacking in ambition, it could have been another movie in the video club from the eighties, but today it’s simply another film released on a streaming platform.

“Exploding Kittens” A Netflix Animation Series: A Blend of Absurdity, Parody, Irreverence, and Folly
“Exploding Kittens” is a Netrflix animation series created by Matthew Inman. With the voices of Tom Ellis, Suzy Nakamura and Ally Maki.
The world of adult animation has been progressively multiplying, with many shows emulating each other— each with variations, some better, some worse. But they all subscribe to a common mantra: to be as irreverent as possible, and the more scandalous, the better.
Often not distinguished by meticulous animation, some carry a more elaborate plot, while others merely string one absurd joke after another, placing their bets on a sprint towards comedic absurdity saturation. “Exploding Kittens” is one such series where absurdity and a plethora of jokes are its key features. As of this Friday, the 12th, it’s yours to enjoy on Netflix.
Plot of “Exploding Kittens”God and the Devil are sent to Earth in the form of kittens, providing a new viewpoint to humanity.

“Blame the Game”, A Classic German Comedy on Netflix
“Blame the Game” is a Netflix romantic comedy starring Janina Uhse, Dennis Mojen, Stephan Luca, Taneshia Abt and Edin Hasanović. It is directed by Marco Petry.

“Blame the Game” is a classic comedic film on Netflix, reminiscent in style to the refined Hollywood classics of Ernst Lubitsch or Frank Capra. This refined and elegant comedy adopts a traditional farcical formula, with most of the action happening on one stage and spanning a single night.
This film, with its simple script and straightforward characters, is sure to entertain those who appreciate a retro-style comedy imbued with a modern narrative thread. Although not uproariously funny, it certainly aims to appeal more to a family audience rather than those seeking outlandish situations.
Plot OverviewThe story revolves around a man named Jan who meets a woman named Pia. One night, Jan finds himself thrust into Pia’s circle of friends, who are quite different from him: they are educated, well-off, and big fans of board games. Throughout the evening, Jan continuously commits social faux pas, bumbling in front of Pia’s friends who belong to a different societal class.
About the FilmApart from the initial meeting, much of the film takes place during a game night at the mansion of one of Pia’s friends. The central theme of the film revolves around social differences and how the protagonist feels out of place amidst a more fortunate and culturally enriched class. “Blame the Game” isn’t a comedy that will have you laughing uncontrollably. Instead, it’s a sophisticated and stylish situational comedy where everything, from the script to the set and pacing, carries a distinct retro touch. The characters are comedic, based on the clichés of the rich and the not-so-rich.
Our OpinionIs it surprising? Not at all. Is it exciting? No. “Blame the Game” is a good film that, however, fails to grab our attention or surprise us, both visually and in terms of the storyline. Regardless, it stands as an entertaining watch for those seeking a light-hearted perspective on class disparities.

“The Champion” is a Netflix movie starring Swit Eme and Dani Rovira. It is directed by Carlos Therón.
“The Champion” is a Spanish film that delves into the complex task of disciplining a troubled young lad. In this unique narrative, a 20-year-old footballer, portrayed by the young actor Swit Eme, showcases the journey of a challenging youth in the glamorous world of football. Interestingly, Dani Rovira sheds his comic roles to participate in this dramatic tale of education as the player’s professor.
Other notable characters in the film include Pablo Chiapella who plays the role of the young man’s father, and Luis Fernandez, who brilliantly embodies the footballer’s manager. The film provides a glimpse into the world of wealth, fancy cars, whimsical desires, and their influence on young lives.
Plot SynopsisDiego, a football genius on the field, but a problematic person off it, faces a critical challenge as his attitude lands him a penalty, jeopardising his career. Subsequently, a psychology professor, Álex, is recruited to rein in Diego’s unruly behaviour. As the story unfolds, we discover that the root cause of Diego’s issues is dyslexia.
About the FilmDo you appreciate the significance of education? “The Champion” is a film that highlights how education can assist us in overcoming our challenges, leading us towards a better life. The plot revolves around dyslexia and its effects within the realm of professional football.
This simple yet engaging script delivers precisely what it promises: a powerful life lesson filled with hope and faith in education. If you’re in search of a thriller or a light-hearted comedy, “The Champion” may not be the one for you. Instead, it is a sincere attempt to shed light on a complex issue like dyslexia that, as per the film, affects one in every ten children.
If you’re an educator, it’s bound to resonate with you as it meticulously scrutinizes sociological factors such as the paternal figure, the role of teachers, and the myriad social issues that these individuals face.
Our Opinion“The Champion” is a cerebral film as it presents a challenging issue within an unconventional setting – professional football, making it more relatable and engaging. The film does not aim to achieve artistic brilliance but rather focuses on highlighting the protagonist’s issue and its implications, bringing the problem closer to the audience. “The Champion”, undeniably, is a film meant to offer a profound lesson.

“Lobola Man” – A South African Rom-Com on Netflix: A Comedy of Love and Trickery
“Lobola Man” is a South African movie directed by Thabang Moleya starring Lawrence Maleka and Kwanele Mthethwa.
This Friday, July 12th, Netflix takes us on a hilarious journey of romance, confusion, hustles, and beautiful women with the South African movie “Lobola Man”. It’s a lively rom-com that, while not groundbreaking, sure knows how to make us laugh.
The crux of the movie is built around the concept of Lobola, a tradition in South Africa where the groom’s family pays the bride’s family. Usually, such negotiations involve an intermediary or broker. Enter our dubious hero, Ace Ngubeni.
Ace, who is hired by a shy client to negotiate with his rich fiancee, is nothing short of a hustler. He is crafty, charming and, unfortunately for his client, only has his eyes on the money. You can imagine how such a negotiation might turn out.
“Lobola Man” is not meant to revolutionize cinema, but it does bring us a delightful slice of life from these characters who, living in a modern society, leverage a traditional custom for their benefit. This movie is not meant to be a social critique or contribute any controversy; instead, it’s a light-hearted, classic comedy that plays with the charm of its characters to provide entertaining confusion.
The screenplay is well-written and effective, adhering to the beats of comedy – quick character introductions, setup of conflicts, crescendo of confusion, leading to the expected conclusion. All the while, the brilliance of the performances shines through.
The movie moves at a good pace and delivers a quality comedic product, although it doesn’t stand out artistically or stylistically. Its humor might be considered simple by some, and its characters aren’t complex, sticking more or less to their humorous roles.
In our opinion, “Lobola Man” succeeds in enthralling us with the eccentricities and likability of its characters. It’s a classic comedy of errors, the perfect excuse to simply switch off and get lost in a storyline that doesn’t lead anywhere significant. But, it sure does entertain.

“Another Self” Season Two on Netflix: Embracing the Eternal Feminine
“Another Self” is a Turkish TV series starring Tuba Büyüküstün. With Riza Kocaoglu, Seda Bakan and Firat Tanis.
The saga of these three companions continues its unerring progression. With the first season being a resounding success, the second season of “Another Self” brings much of the same: the rollercoaster lives of these three women including their trials, romances, and self-discoveries.
“Another Self” is a Turkish series that places sensitivity at its core and narrates, with utmost sincerity, the miracle of life in all its facets—joy, sorrow, nostalgia, and ups and downs. It’s a series about women, about self-discovery, and above all, about life itself. Starting today, we can all indulge in the second season of this Turkish series on Netflix.
Strong Actresses for a Series Entrenched in Emotion, Self-discovery, and Love
The series features the shining star of Turkish cinema, Tuba Büyüküstün, who is integral to virtually all the plot threads of the series. Ada, the most complex character, guides us along the spiritual pathway that the series seeks to explore. Through her profession as a doctor and her meditative practices, Ada unveils to us a spiritual world which is undoubtedly the main cause of the series’ success.
“Another Self” sets a spiritual heritage as its backdrop—an invisible thread passed on from mothers to children, which transcends even medicine. The series focuses heavily on this topic, but also touches the theme of mortality (one of the friends is battling cancer and trying to surpass her treatments).
However, the series also delves into romantic relationships, which are always tense and always difficult. All three women face challenging situations and the world of relationships doesn’t seem to fit seamlessly into their lives. Seda Bakan plays Leyla and Boncuk Yilmaz completes the protagonist trio as Sevgi.
The Deliberate Pace and Melodious Music: Barely Perceptible Elements that Add Charm to “Another Self”“Another Self” is a series about the miracle of life and the simultaneous trials of living it. It’s a contemplative series in which conflicts are resolved through words, without resorting to drastic ups and downs in rhythm or plot. It also boasts a fantastic soundtrack filled with soft romantic pieces and well-known songs. In fact, the second season begins with a fitting well-known song by Joan Baez.

“Vanished into the Night” – A Captivating Kidnapping Thriller on Netflix
“Vanished into the Night” is a Netflix movie starring Riccardo Scamarcio and Annabelle Wallis. It is directed by Renato De Maria
Netflix returns with a plot formula that, although not entirely new, continues to deliver: child abduction and the enduring struggle of parents trying to recover their children. This time, there is no Mel Gibson or Liam Neeson, but the duo of Annabelle Wallis and Riccardo Scamarcio lead this intriguing family thriller revolving around kidnappings.
[image error]Vanished into the NightThe PlotThe story revolves around a debt-ridden father going through a divorce who has to deal with a kidnapping. The abductors demand 150,000 euros, which the father doesn’t possess, leading him to borrow from an acquaintance. In return, he is forced into a dangerous game of drug trafficking.
About the Film“Vanished into the Night” is a well-crafted telefilm in the form of a family thriller that depicts parents facing their worst fear: the loss of their children. Without intending to revolutionize cinema or offer a grand visual spectacle, “Vanished into the Night” does well as a formula thriller. However, it doesn’t particularly shine on the technical or storyline front. But, it packs enough intriguing plot twists to offer a riveting viewing experience.
“Vanished into the Night” isn’t action-packed and lacks extensive chase sequences. Instead, it offers a slow-burning narrative that, thanks to well-executed suspense, manages to keep the audience entertained and invested.
Our Opinion“Vanished into the Night” is a conventional TV thriller – the kind you watch, enjoy in the moment, but easily forget. It doesn’t offer complex characters or any aesthetic spectacle. Sadly, it fits the bill of those good productions that entertain for a while but fade away from memory just as easily.
