Storefront hosts Beyond Borders at TWA Flight Center
On Sunday, May 8th, Storefront for Art and Architecture occupied TWA Flight Center for BEYOND BORDERS, its 2016 Spring Benefit.

The benefit brought 700 people to the terminal to celebrate and support Storefront. It was the last public event held in the 1962 Eero Saarinen-designed structure before its redevelopment into a hotel begins later this year.
BEYOND BORDERS activated the terminal with a variety of experiences, including a series of virtual and mediated installations, a live auction, film montages and messages, a special photographic commission, global food experiences, portrait and raffle opportunities, and musical performances.
The event reflected upon a growing collective consciousness about spaces of difference and the desire to transcend them. During the evening, Storefront honored photographer and agency Ezra Stoller / ESTO / Erica Stoller, whose photos of the terminal are a reference to the worlds of architecture and photography, as well as architect and activist Teddy Cruz, who has investigated the nuances of the US-Mexico border for decades.
“The border exists only to be transgressed; and isn’t the ultimate aspiration of art and architecture the transgression of our own fears and conventions? This is what Storefront stands for, as a cultural space it has always been at the forefront of cultural debate pushing our creative fields to reinvent themselves.” -Teddy Cruz, honoree.
MAD New York. Musicians are invited to create recordings

MAD New York. Musicians are invited to create recordings
Atmosphere for Enjoyment: Harry Bertoia’s Environment for Sound explores the Sonambient sculptures of Bertoia, an artist and designer whose career spanned just over thirty-five years.
Known to many as the designer of the “Diamond” chair still in production today by Knoll, Bertoia was also a prolific maker of prints, jewelry and sculpture—both intimate and monumental—that grapple with properties of light, volume and sound. He created much of his work from metal wire and rods, and toward the middle of his career, he discovered that when these strike one another, they make lush, resonant sounds. By the early 1960s, he was creating prototypes for his sounding, or tonal, sculptures—work that would eventually occupy the remaining years of his career.
These sculptures would become collectively known as Sonambient, a combination of the Latin roots of the words “sound” and “environment.” In 1968 Bertoia began to set up the eighteenth-century stone barn on his property in Pennsylvania to house a selection of his sounding sculptures and gongs. There he recorded 360 (known) reel-to-reel tapes of the sculptures. The barn is still standing today, with ninety-one original sounding sculptures installed inside, as Bertoia had intended them: an environment for sound.
MAD’s exhibition includes an interactive display of Sonambient sculptures created by Harry Bertoia’s son Val Bertoia. Every final Friday throughout the run of the exhibition, MAD invites musicians to create sound recordings with this installation. These Studio Sessions may be booked in one-hour segments, and artists must provide their own recording equipment.
Atmosphere for Enjoyment: Studio Sessions : May 27, June 24, July 29, August 26 | 6:00 to 9:00 pm . Free with Museum admission.
First Class Watches & James Moore Jewellers have got the X factor!

Wagner & Rowland at First Class Watches
A First Class Watches customer service representative was met with a telephone enquiry from a charismatic and colourful gentleman last week who had some queries regarding the extensive range of watches available on the First Class Watches website. After a quick discussion of the customer’s needs the two homed in on a Citizen Black Ion-Plated watch from the Navihawk Radio Controlled collection.
As the conversation drew to a close and names exchanged the member of staff could hardly believe it when he discovered that he had been talking to Brazilian-born singer, and X Factor finalist, Wagner Fiuza-Carrilho. As a personal fan of the singer the representative implored him to finalise his purchase in store to which Wagner agreed.
True to his word, he visited the James Moore Jewellers in Kenilworth on the morning of May 11th and met with the representative who rushed to serve him on the shop floor. After purchasing his new watch, he showed him the newly revamped store and the new exquisite range of Thomas Sabo jewellery and watches. He was also kind enough to share pictures of his visit with us on his Facebook page:
And it doesn’t seem like this will be the last time Wagner will be visiting Kenilworth as he’s already got his eye on another watch for his collection!
Wagner shot to fame on UK television in the seventh series of the X Factor in 2010 after entering the contest hoping to make a “new start” and provide for his son. Wagner came 6th in the show and was one of the top 10 contestants asked to go on the X Factor tour 2011. Now a household name Wagner is using his new found fame to make guest appearances and personalised video messages through his public Facebook page where he has over 170,000 people following him.
Launched in 2005 by high street jewellers James Moore & Co, First Class Watches is a family owned and operated business who have used the power of internet retail to reach customers from all corners of the globe. More than ten years on, they are one of the UK’s largest independent watch retailers with hundreds of thousands of happy customers. Using their responsive website customers can browse a stock of over 5000 watches and more than 85 designer watch brands at their leisure. First Class Watches uses self-photographed 360-degree imagery, product reviews, price matching and free watch adjustment to allow customers to make an informed and quick purchases while receiving the same service and warranty they would expect from a retail store.

Reconstructing The Portrait : Kim DePaul and Liz Steketee. June 3rd– July 30th 2016. Opening Reception: Friday, June 3rd 5:00pm – 7:30pm
Schneider Gallery is pleased to announce the exhibition Reconstructing the portrait with work by Kim DePaul and Liz Steketee. The work in this exhibition questions memory and the photograph as a reliable source of our own history through altered photographs.DePaul and Steketee both utilize collage and deliberate juxtaposition in to create unique portraits.
Kim DePaul rewrites her family’s history through the photographs she alters. DePaul incorporates found objects and text to images to encourage intimate narratives told in various voices. The reworked, torn apart, layered portraits become ambiguous pieces of information.
Liz Steketee fabricates hybrid personas and memories of people by stitching together layers of fragmented faces. Steketee conjoins what once were independent moments to form a questionable account of these newly formed individuals’ histories.
We look forward to seeing you there.

Sotheby’s annual spring auction of 19th Century European Paintings in New York
Sotheby’s annual spring auction of 19th Century European Paintings in New York will be held on 18 May 2016, featuring 96 exceptional works of art that showcase in the artistic diversity of the era: from the Belle Époque to Academic realism to Sporting Art.

Sotheby’s auctions.
The auction will be on public exhibition in Sotheby’s York Avenue galleries beginning thisSaturday, 14 May.
Leading the sale is a selection of 19 works formerly from the collection of Margaret Thompson Biddle. Described by her contemporaries as American by birth and French in spirit, Mrs. Biddle embodied the idea of an American in Paris. After marrying, Ambassador Anthony J. Drexel Biddle, Jr., in 1931, the couple began a diplomatic tour of Europe including stays in Norway, Poland and England. After World War II, Mrs. Biddle moved into a fashionable townhouse off the Boulevard Saint-German hosting a diverse group of guests from General & Mrs. Dwight Eisenhower to Pope John XXIII to the Duke and Duchess of Windsor as well as notable French politicians, artists and writers.
Her esteemed collection included paintings by masters of the 19th and early-20th centuries, including works by Corot, Gauguin, Renoir, Monet – and the present group of works by Jean Béraud, Eugène Galien-Laloue and Stanislas Lépine on offer this May. These works have long been held in storage, unseen for more than half a century. Many of the collection’s paintings depict the urban bustle of Parisian boulevards, shops and cultural institutions Mrs. Biddle enjoyed in her daily life. Bois de Boulogne (estimate $600/800,000) and Scène sur Les Champs-Élysées (estimate $500/700,000) each reflect Béraud’s strength as an artist and the vibrant culture of Belle Époque Paris.
Beyond Mrs. Biddle’s collection, the auction is highlighted by a full-length portrait of Celia Tobin Clark by Giovanni Boldini (estimate $1/1.5 million). Mrs. Tobin Clark was the wife of Charles W. Clark, son of copper magnate and United States Senator, William H. Clark. Upon its completion in 1904, Boldini invited Mrs. Clark to his Paris studio to unveil the portrait describing it as “magnificent and with nothing to change.” The portrait has remained in her family since its completion and is being sold by her descendants. In November 2010, Sotheby’s set two of the top three auction prices for works by Giovanni Boldini with two examples of his life-sized portraiture.
A selection of five paintings by William Bouguereau will be offered in the sale and led by Le Sommeil (estimate $800,000/1.2 million). Bouguereau submitted Le Sommeil to the Salon of 1864, a pivotal moment when he moved from the “Grand Genre” of history painting towards more familial scenes, including the idealized peasants and children for which he is best known. By rendering these subjects on a large scale, he granted them a heroic dimension that was previously reserved for historical or mythological subjects, and the formula brought him extraordinary success for which he remains celebrated to this day.
Sporting art in the sale will be led by Sir Alfred James Munnings’ North Cornish Hunt (estimate $800,000/1.2 million). Known for his ability to combine established hunting iconography with a fresh new vision, this monumental work is an elegant demonstration of Munnings understanding of composition and color.
Jean-Baptiste-Camille Corot’s Marcoussis – les Vaches au Paturage is an excellent example of the artist’s celebrated landscapes (estimate $400/600,000). This particular work was in the esteemed collection of Samuel P. Avery, and sold in 1897 to James J. Hill, founder of the American Transcontinental Railroad Network, whose collection of paintings by Corots was rivalled only by Harry Osborne and Louisine Havemeyer and the artist’s biographer, Étienne Moreau-Nélaton.
London auctions. The greatest Indian artists in modern times at Bonhams
Bonhams, the international auction house, will feature some of the greatest Indian artists in modern times at its forthcoming Modern & Contemporary South Asian Art sale in London on 27 May 2016.

London auctions. The greatest Indian artists in modern times at Bonhams
Burgeoning interest in Indian art in recent years has heightened the awareness for South Asian modern painting and demand has rocketed. Many previously relatively unknown artists have since become household names.
This sale includes works from the Bengal School, including Sudhir Khastgir and Ramkinkar Baij, demonstrating the early influence of East Asian wash techniques and the emerging pan Asian aesthetic. The influence of these early artists, straddling the era of British rule and Independence, feeds into the contemporary pieces in the sale by Bikash Bhattacharjee and Sakti Burman. Romanticised, idyllic pastoral scenes by Sailoz Mookherjea and M.F. Husain are offered along with more conventionally modernist works by F.N. Souza and S.H. Raza.
Tahmina Ghaffar, Head of Sale for Modern and Contemporary South Asian Art, said: “Bonhams is always looking for previously undervalued artists, to bring them to light and to give them the attention they deserve. The sale features a number of works fresh to the market from esteemed private collections in Europe and the US, catering to the growing sophistication of Indian art collectors. We’re confident we will continue our trajectory of success in the Indian art market.”
Leading the sale is an Untitled (Landscape) by F.N. Souza. Souza is known for his energetic and often highly erotic work, and has achieved record-breaking prices for Indian artists over the years. The famed critic John Berger described him as an artist who “straddles many traditions but serves none.” His relentless creative force is very much apparent in this landscape, which depicts a frenzied and foreboding world.
“Souza brings a sense of macabre, black comedy to his work,” said Ghaffar. “This piece is a wonderful example of the wild and farcical phase he went through during the early sixties.” Souza had founded the Bombay Progressive Artists’ Group in 1947, a formative movement that aimed to propel Indian modern art onto the international stage.
Other sale highlights are works by Zarina Hashmi and Nalini Malani. New York based Indian artist Zarina Hashmi is well known for her versatility in medium, and her abstract, minimal style. She was one of the five artists selected to be in India’s first entry to the Venice Biennale, and has had retrospectives at the Hammer Museum LA, the Art Institute of Chicago and the Guggenheim New York. “This rare sculpture, one of the two lots on offer by Hashmi at the sale, is a wonderfully minimalist commentary on the movement of people and the search for an identity beyond mere national borders.” said Ghaffar.
More well known for her video art and installations, Nalini Malani’s work is a visceral and vibrant oil painting. In 2013 Malani became the first Asian woman to receive the Arts & Culture Fukuoka Prize for her “consistent focus on such daring contemporary and universal themes as religious conflict, war, oppression of women and environmental destruction.” In October 2017, Nalini Malani will be the first Indian artist to have a retrospective at the Centre Pompidou in Paris.
The Bonhams Modern and Contemporary South Asian Art sale will take place on Friday 27 May 2016 at 10:00 BST.
Tough Team Take on Endurance Challenge for the Teapot Trust

John Young on the Teapot Trust Bike
Four brave men are set to complete one of the toughest endurance challenges in Europe, Enduroman’s Arch to Arc Event in order to raise awareness and funds for Scottish charity, Teapot Trust.
The Teapot Trust is an East Lothian-based charity that provides hospital-based art therapy to children with chronic illnesses and the charity’s co-founder, Dr John Young, is one of the team members taking part in this amazing challenge.
John and his wife Laura founded the Teapot Trust in 2010 after seeing the gaps in the care of their daughter Verity, who suffered from Lupus (Systemic Lupus Erythematosus) and also cancer before her tragic death, aged just eight years of age, in 2009.
Gullane resident, John, aged 51, will also be accompanied by good friends Richard Hobson, also 51, Stuart Macleod, aged 49, and Alan Cardwell aged 42. Juggling full time jobs, families and other commitments, the team have already begun their gruelling months of training up in the Scottish mountains.
Beginning in London and finishing in Paris, the Arch to Arc event connects two of the world’s most beautiful cities via a series of hard-hitting endurance tests. Beginning at Marble Arch, London John and the team will start the challenge with an 87 mile run to Dover, Kent. They will then complete the notoriously difficult 21 mile channel swim to France. Finally, the team will cycle 180 miles from Calais to the Arc de Triomphe in Paris.
‘The Teapotters’ team will be completing the challenge as a relay, with each member competing in 60 minute durations. The event will be taking place in the last week of September 2016, with the team’s boat due to depart on Thursday 29 September 2016.
John Young said, “We are incredibly proud of what the Teapot Trust has achieved over the years, and fundraising events like the Arch to Arc challenge are fantastic ways to raise awareness and funds for the charity.
“Art therapy makes a huge difference to the lives of so many chronically ill children by helping them to relax, communicate or express themselves.
“The Teapot Trust relies completely on donations to continue its operations and so we would like to use this opportunity to raise as much awareness and funds as possible through this tough challenge.”
In 2015, the Teapot Trust provided over 3,000 hours of art therapy and interacted with 5,215 children. The couple were also named as Points of Lights by Prime Minister, David Cameron in June 2015 in recognition of their outstanding contributions to the community.
The charity works across Scotland in Edinburgh, Glasgow, Inverness, Dundee, Aberdeen, Kirkcaldy and Melrose as well as in Great Ormond Street Hospital in London.
The main focus is to continue providing the current services and fundraise for a programme of research. The Teapot Trust also hopes to begin one-on-one work in the Borders and begin a group art therapy session in the outpatients department of St John’s Hospital, West Lothian.
The Teapot Trust also hopes to raise enough funds to start providing art therapy to the remaining six NHS regions of the Scottish Paediatric and Adolescent Rheumatology Network (SPARN).

MyWorkpapers launches in UK with new financial workpaper and collaboration technology for both businesses and accountancy practices

Rich Neal, CEO, MyWorkpapers
– Software complements all popular book-keeping packages such as Xero and Intuit
London, 11th May 2016 – MyWorkpapers, a leading financial and audit software company has launched in the UK with a range of cloud-based technology aimed at accountancy practices, bookkeepers and businesses who will benefit from faster and more accurate work-paper generation and financial verification, significant administrative time-savings and access to actionable business intelligence that will increase overall profitability.
CEO at MyWorkpapers, Rich Neal commented, “We are providing accounting firms and their clients with content, methodology, technology and innovation to improve productivity, compliance and most importantly collaboration. Our clients quite simply save time with our new Connect platform, everyone, whether an accountant, bookkeeper or an individual business, has shared and easy access to financial records, workflow and day-to-day task management that makes sense of the monthly numbers. So whether it’s chasing debtors, managing cash-flow or having the insight to make critical decisions on future strategy, finance professionals now have the tools to help their businesses perform better.”
Accountancy practices – “the honeymoon is over…you need to make clients more sticky”
Rich Neal, explains why its products are a game-changer for accounting firms, “Cloud accounting software has been picked up and adopted by thousands of businesses in the last few years because of the data feeds and intuitive use. Accountants are also promoting it to their clients, and assisting with implementation and rollout. The consequence, however, is that the ‘honeymoon’ is soon over because the client becomes educated and think they don’t need their accountant as much. We have seen this in New Zealand and Australia. Businesses become more independent and choose to do more themselves, and are less reliant on their accountant for processing and checking of the numbers.
What our products do is to help accountancy practices not only systemise their workload and become more competitive but also maintain and often re-ignite communications with their client base.
A unique feature of our Connect product is that the accountant can work with in-house finance teams, bookkeepers and business owners to create to-do lists for weekly or daily tasks that they should be doing in their business, for example setting up weekly routines for cash control or when to process bank feeds. By introducing a virtual software platform that both themselves and their clients can access and liaise on makes clients more sticky and appreciative of the knowledge and value that their accountant can bring to the table. In turn, with the right systems procedures, processes and best practices they can grow their fee base. By reviewing figures, managing queries and assigning tasks on a daily basis, year-end becomes a breeze both for the accountant and the client. Our Connect product effectively provides a bridge between the two parties, both in collaboration and between software they both use.”
Businesses meet compliance and 30-50% labour-savings
MyWorkpapers’ Connect product can be used by accountancy practices, in-house finance professionals, bookkeepers or business owners. Whilst automation of the likes of payroll, monthly reporting or VAT returns saves time, what many modern book-keeping tools still lack is verification of the numbers, analysis and the ability to assign queries, manage related tasks and create relevant work papers and supporting documents.
Rich Neal comments “if not managed correctly, it can be a bit like giving a Learner Driver an Open Licence and the keys to the Porsche, they believe they have the wisdom of an accountant because they can easily navigate the bookkeeping software and reconcile the bank. However a simple intuitive tool does not guarantee financial data accuracy and in many cases businesses are driving in the dark without their lights on”.
MyWorkpapers’ Connect solution was driven out of the frustration of MyWorkpapers CEO when managing his own business. Rich Neal said “each month we produce profit and loss, balance sheet, debtors and creditors reports and compare to budget. But there were always issues – I could see these by just looking at the numbers. So I’d print the reports, highlight the issues and send out a barrage of emails asking for explanations or more information. By the time I got responses, another month had passed. Nothing was available to the business market – whether small or large – to collaborate on financial information, let alone extract the information I wanted within seconds straight from the bookkeeping software.
I conceptualised with our team how we could pull information from any bookkeeping software like Xero, Quickbooks and Kashflow, then make notes, make comments, create workpapers with supporting documents, and assign queries to internal personnel, our CFO or our accountant. When speaking to my colleagues in business, they had the same frustration. So we spent three years building a solution and close to two years market beta testing – MyWorkpapers Connect. But the product goes further – it can be used by an accounting practice, or a bookkeeper or the business owner or all of them in collaboration”.
Using MyWorkpapers’ solutions businesses can improve the accuracy of financial records, meet compliance and also save between 30-50% on labour costs.
UK presence & support from vendors such as Xero, Intuit and Kashflow
The company has opened a UK office in Richmond, London and will sell its solutions direct. It is also working closely with software vendors / integration partners like IRIS, Intuit Quickbooks, Xero, Thompson Reuters, Sage, MYOB, Forbes and others. With Cloud software providers Xero and Intuit, Connect will be able to be bought through their App stores.
Since 2013, Auditflow (recently re-branded as MyWorkpapers) has sold its Audit software exclusively through Iris. The exclusivity ceased recently but the companies are working closely on integration and future product roadmaps.
MyWorkpapers Product Range – Audit, Connect & Exempt
The MyWorkpapers product range includes:
Connect – the first cloud workpaper product that is book-keeping software agnostic to improve collaboration between accountants, business advisors, bookkeepers, finance professionals and business. Connect enables the accountant to manage their monthly client work and build up a year-end file, or use specially for year-end compliance. It includes a workflow and queries management dashboard, client portal and will bridge most business bookkeeping software to the software used in an accountant’s practice. Significant time saving has been evidenced in testing with beta clients over two years.
Connect will also help business owners focus on systemising their business to make money, with the collaboration and support from their advisors.
The platform is used by the business management, bookkeepers, advisors and their accountant.
Audit – a simple and automated paperless cloud-based system for tracking and managing different types of audits, enabling audit managers to minimise the risks of non-compliance, spend less time on administration and more time on more valuable activities. The product will eliminate overauditing and only audit what you need to using standard audit content templates and methodology.
At Accountex the company is launching a new integration and dynamic workpaper index, lead schedule and workpaper builder.
Exempt – Dynamic building Workpapers, client engagement management and collaboration for companies that do not require an audit but still need to file Exempt accounts. A fast and compliant workpaper solution for accounting practices.
Meeting industry standards and best practice
The Audit solution integrates industry standard audit content templates and methodology including the likes of Mercia, GAAP Consulting and others.
Affordability – Connect – Cloud-based model from £5 per user per month
With pricing starting from £5 per user per month, MyWorkpapers’ solutions are delivered on a SAAS model with no upfront capital expenditure and produce a swift ROI in the form of time-savings and increased profitability.
