Nutmegs & the Charter Oak: November 21st, 2016

Mia is from CT, and Adelheid is in CT…so, let’s talk about Connecticut!
Covering Connecticut
The following are pictures of Connecticut–stock photography, I’m not that good with a camera!–that I’ve used for Adelheid cover, either current or upcoming. (The cover to Adelheid, Volume One is not actually CT but does look like the state. It’s not included here, though.)
This was used for Adelheid, Volume Two (Freak Central) and is a picture of Hartford, the state capital.
This will be used for a future cover, and is a picture of Fairfield.

From Mia’s Desk: November 14th, 2016

From Mia’s Desk will post the second week of each month and discuss something of interest to Mia, which she hopes others will find interesting too! It may focus on opinion pieces, literature (historical and current), or even movies–because a good story is a good story.
Gutted
I’m happy to announce that the third story in the new Adelheid sequence releases today! Gutted is a short story featuring Abby, the Ancient vampire trapped in the body of a ten-year-old who we met in Voracious. It also goes and plays in a bit of historical fiction, looking at the time of Jack the Ripper, because Abby was old enough to be there.
A Ripper tale has been something I’ve wanted to write for a while, and this one–and the theory I posit–is one I had fun with and am excited for readers to check out!

In Memorial
Today would have been my grandmother’s 84th birthday, but she passed away on September 3rd. Although we weren’t close in the way many other grandmothers and granddaughters were, the loss has been difficult. She was always very supportive of my writing, even when she didn’t always “get” it. But today’s “The Adelheid Chronicle” is dedicated to her because it’s her birthday, and the story I want to share.
She actually started watching “Angel” on television before I really knew much about it. But she knew it was vampires and magic, and that being what I wrote, it made her think of me. One day, I came home to find a box. In the box were all five seasons of “Angel” on DVD, and a note that said, “This is to help you with your writer’s block.”
I watched the hell out of those DVDs, and wrote. I still have the note too. It was out of the blue, but very important. Today, I want to remember that support.

The Other Side of the Pen: October 31st, 2016

As a writer, as a freelance editor, as a reviewer… Well, sometimes Mia gets mouthy, and the fourth week of the month is when she’s gonna let you know just what she thinks!
Happy Halloween!
Okay, no rant today, ’cause it’s Halloween! While I revere the less cheerful roots of Samhain, I also really enjoy the secular festivities of Halloween, especially since having a child. We dress up as a family and go out trick-or-treating at the mall’s event. Last year, my husband was Captain America, my son was Hulk, and I was Black Widow. It was a hoot!
So instead of ranting today, I’m going to celebrate with freebie flash fiction from Adelheid! Enjoy this quick Dakota story.

FM Radio
It looks like the first commercial FM radio station was founded in Bloomfield, CT. That’s pretty neat. ^_^

Release Day!
The next Adelheid story is, at long last, finally available! It’s the first in a series of seven short stories working on a loose theme. I explain more in the book’s introduction, but suffice it to say, the first one is now available and the others will be coming every two weeks. There will be pre-orders available!

Apex (Adelheid #6)
There are certain things you don’t mess with.
You don’t tug on Superman’s cape. You don’t spit into the wind. You don’t play with preternatural genetics. And you don’t screw around with Dakota.
People seem to have forgotten that.
She’ll just have to remind them.

Hunter’s Point
I’m happy to finally give you a little more information about the next series I’m planning to write, which will be a series of paranormal cozy mysteries. Think… Murder, She Wrote with vampires! How can that not be cool, right? I get to talk about it here, since while it’s not in the Adelheid series or city, it is in the same universe.
It will be primarily set in a city called Hunter’s Point, Maine, in the United States of post-Cameron’s Law existence.

I Wear Many Hats
Books and words are, almost literally, my life.
I’m an author who writes and publishes my own books. I edit, format, and create cover art for the books of others. I do “hobby” writing. I have a book review blog where I read books for others, and then I read books for pleasure.
The author and editor are the two most prominent, since the latter is my “day job” and the author still my “night job.” Since I do these things in addition to being a mother, and a wife, and maintaining a household, and dealing with chronic illness, the day job that helps pay the bills comes first. This often means that my own writing suffers.
Further, after spending a day working on other people’s books, it can be too much to want to work on my own.
It’s been difficult trying to find a balance between the two. Like most people, finding a way to pay the rent and live our dreams is a hard one. It’s one that I continue to struggle with, pretty much every day.
This is one of the reasons I created my Patreon account, to try to help afford a little weight to the scales and allow myself to write more. Otherwise, I soldier on.
Do other author-editors find this as much of a struggle as I do, I wonder.

Autumn!
I’m so excited that it’s rolling into autumn–officially starting in just three days!–that I’m running around squealing! Okay, not really, but pretty darn close. New England is BEAUTIFUL in the autumn! Drive down some of our lovely rural roads, and the trees look like they’re on fire…without the actual nastiness of being on fire.

Book Signings
I’m happy to announce that I’m going to be attending three book signings in 2017! I’ll be spreading the word more as we get closer, but if you are or will be in any of the areas, feel free to stop by and see me.
