Halloween Then Meets Halloween Now

Boo!

Boo! So old it’s almost scary again?

October is my absolutely most favorite month of the year and Halloween has always been my favorite holiday. I’m going to wear something silly and hand out candy fortrick-or-treat tonight, for the first time in many years. I don’t care if there’s only a handful of kids that will show up, since we live on a block with no other houses. I don’t care if it is cold, rainy, and windy–the forecast shows a 90% chance of that being the case. I’m just doing it becaus...

Thoughts on Author Branding

It means something: espresso.

It means something: espresso.

Over the past few months I’ve had one of those gradual realizations at the core of my being that creates a sea change in how I look at things and how I see my place in the larger scheme of things. This isn’t one of those sudden epiphanies, nor is it one of those things that you understand logically but still can’t embrace on some deeper level. No, this goes way beyond that and to the level of acceptance of how things really are and how best to function in terms o...

Remembering to Communicate

What is it trying to say?

What is it trying to say?

All writers have to learn to deal with distractions and those uneasy times whenwhat to do nextis elusive. And then there arethe difficulties are triggered by emotional or health issues, where even the most focused and driven amongus arederailed by subconscious distress. I know a lot of my own problems stem from lack of good sleep. Joint pain and other physical problems make it difficult for me to remain comfortable for enough hours most nights, so I getup because I c...

To mark both home stretch and upcoming birthday, the first book,An Uncollected Death,is on sale at Amazon for 99 cents today and tomorrow, June 26th-27th.

Dealing With Distractions

Staying contained and in focus

Staying contained and in focus

Distractions from my work come in all forms, but of course what constitutes a distraction is relative, as dependent on the temperament of the author as it is on what is actually going on around her.

The past few weeks have seen an uptick in my social life, both friends and family. There have been get-togethers and there have been projects, coming in quick succession. I do love my family and friends–but I alsotire easily, as I’m dealing with a combination of an a...

Identifying What I Write

What am I?

What am I?

When I first decided to write a mystery, I thought I would attempt a themed cozy series–something with a lovable heroineand a world that wasstylized, cute and fun. My intent was to put my writing skills to work in a genre that I was familiar with and enjoyed. It didn’t hurtthat cozies weregrowing in popularity, anda reasonably well-crafted seriesmight even bring in much-needed income.

My research turned up a pattern among the better-known ones: their authors had more than one serie...

Words From Others that Keep Me Going

Just read a post at Kirsten Lamb’s blog that made my day, made me stand a little taller and feel a little less crazy to be pursuing a living as a novelist:

The Writer vs the Author

bothbooksonshelf

No getting away from it

In an oft-used distinction, a writer writes and an author has written. The writer creates and the author’s job is to secure readers. I like the writing part WAY better, which is almost universally true of authors. In an ideal world, our books would suddenly materialize in the hands of our ideal audience, who wouldn’t find a single thing wrong with them and be willing to throw lavish
amounts of money and praise our way. (Yes, that’s the stuff dreams are made of, which i...
