#SaturdaySample Mallory and Creech, Dancing in the White Room
Welcome to Sunday Sample, where I post a little bit of what I'm working on.
This week, I've been busy with another round of edits for Dancing in the White Room. This upmarket women's novel comes out in March of next year. It's a mix of literary fiction and romance.
In the story, the main character, Mallory, needs to decide between her current love, Bell, and her old high school sweetheart, Creech. When trouble comes, it's Creech who's there for her.
“I’m at the Quality Inn. It’s not far,” he says. “If you need me or anything.” I squeeze his arm, on purpose this time. “Thanks.” He puts his hand on mine. “It’s going to be okay, you know.” “How many times have you fed me that line?” “Haven’t steered you wrong yet.” And suddenly, it’s as though we’re back in high school. Me finding refuge in Creech, it’s an old pattern. The elevator comes and he gets on. He holds it open with his hand and looks at me with about the most serious expression I’ve ever seen pasted to his face. “Anything you need, Mallo, you call me.” Impulsively, I kiss him on the cheek. I’m still feeling the scratch of his skin as the door shuts between us.

Book Title: Halo's Wish (Book one in the Dreams Come True Series)Author: Sharon KlevePublisher: Books to Go NowGenre: Contemporary Christmas RomanceRelease Date: 9.13.2013Length: 50 pagesHeat Rating: Sweet
Book Blurb: Halo Ann Carlyle wishes for a home, family, and a boat-load of pets. What she gets is a bruised hip, a lump on the head, a broken ankle, and her new yellow Honda Civic is demolished.
Rich McFarland, a sexy veterinarian, keeps showing up in the most unexpected places, promising everything she's ever wanted.
Halo believes she only has time to pursue her career as a pet detective and must ignore her growing attraction to achieve her dreams.
Will Halo trust her heart, and find a way to get both for Christmas?
Excerpt:She'd just placed another call through to Pemsky's office, which went straight to his voicemail, when the office door opened. Halo smiled and looked up into dreamy, gold-flecked green eyes, short sandy brown hair, a slight cleft chin, and full lips set in a hard line. Even with the stern look he had on his face, my hormones jumped into overdrive. Mr. Dreamy cleared his throat—she must've been staring. In her most professional voice she said, "Good morning. How may I help you?" He removed a piece of paper from his shirt pocket and unfolded the sheet."I was parked in front of the Beacon Hill Ale House and my driver's side mirror was sideswiped by one of Pemsky's Security's SUV's Friday night." Halo loved the Beacon Hill Ale House. Every Saturday night the Ale House allowed local bands to jam together. That's where she'd met her last loser boyfriend. She'd had a lot of loser boyfriends. She's currently on a hiatus from dating, but she wouldn't mind jumping back into the dating game for this dream-boat.He handed her the piece of paper."I wasn't able to get a look at the driver, but I got the license plate number of the vehicle that hit my car and drove away." He emphasized the last part."I'm very sorry about your car. I'm sure Mr. Pemsky will be happy to cover the damage." Halo checked the company log and Pemsky's name popped up as the driver—she gulped.

Book Title: Central Bark At Christmas (Book one in the Dog Tails Series)
Author: Jennifer ConnerPublisher: Books to Go NowGenre: Sweet Contemporary Christmas RomanceRelease Date: 11.09.2013Length: 50 pagesHeat Rating: Sweet
Book Blurb: When Tennyson’s boyfriend left her for her best friend from high-school, all Tennyson received in the break up was her dog. She’s sworn off men and now is rebuilding her life. The only thing Par does is work. He barely has time to do anything he wants for himself other than take his dog to the dog park. When Par and Tennyson find an abandoned dog at the park named Duke. Will they find room in their hearts to take him in? And can this Christmas season weave some special magic for the two of them? Book Excerpt: “I’m happy this wasn’t your worst date ever, because I had a great time.” He lifted her chin with the tips of his finger. Slowly he lowered his head until she thought she would die of anticipation. He clamped his hands to her waist and gazed into her eyes. “You’re so beautiful…” There was depth and sincerity in the tone of his voice. She felt special. Desired. He dropped his head and kissed her. Gentle at first and then deep. She couldn’t breathe. He’d sucked all the air from her lungs, but there was no way she wanted him to stop. As she brushed his firm lips to hers, she relished the feel of her blood simmering in her veins. Par slid his fingers through her long hair to cradle and position her head to kiss her even more thoroughly. His lips pulled away from hers and he stepped back. She reached for the roof of the car to steady herself. Oh. My. God… could this man kiss. “Not bad for a first date,” he whispered and then kissed her gently again. Okay… so it was a date. After that kiss it turned into an ‘official date’ and she had no regrets at all. Book Title:Christmas Gift That Keeps Wagging (Book two in the Dog Tails Series)Author: Jennifer ConnerPublisher: Books to Go NowGenre: Sweet Contemporary Christmas RomanceRelease Date: 11.06.2013Length: 50 pagesHeat Rating: Sweet
Book Blurb: Julian Barrows has his hands full working full time and being a single dad to his kindergarten, special needs son, Gabe. Gabe’s teacher convinces Julian he doesn’t need to do everything on his own and introduces him to a seizure dog trainer, Hanna Acker.
Hanna and her sister grew up without any ‘Christmas Cheer’. She’s trying to get her sister through college and doesn’t have time to let anyone too close, especially the handsome single dad with a kid.
But, Christmas has a way of changing what we thought we wanted… especially when Santa and an adorable four-legged ‘elf’ are involved.
Book Excerpt: “What’s this?” Hanna asked, as she ran a hand over the grocery bag wrapping paper. Julian took her coat and hung it by the door so she could follow Gabe into the living room.“Daddy saw this in a store window and said that we had to get it for you. Open it!” Gabe said. “I wrapped it myself,” he added proudly.“But it’s not Christmas.”“No. This is a before Christmas gift. You have to open it now.”She pulled off a half-pound of scotch tape and finally the paper fell away. Hanna stared at the gift in disbelief. “A Christmas sock… with my name on it.”Julian came up behind her and wrapped his arms around her waist. “You told me that you’d never had a Christmas stocking of your own when you were growing up. Gabe knew Santa wouldn’t know where you were if you didn’t have you sock hung somewhere.” He winked. “So you needed it.”“You can take it to your home or you can hang it here!” Gabe shouted almost tripping over Cody. Welcome Mark Lloyd
I'm pleased to have publisher Mark Lloyd on the blog today.
So cue up the kazoo fanfare, release the multi-colored pigeons, grab your hot toddy and read on.
How an author meets a publisher. By Mark Lloyd, Chief Yo-Yo Polisher at Pillar International Publishing.
I first met the writer Thaddeus Lovecraft when his bodyguards kidnapped me at gunpoint in the summer of 2007. We still laugh today about the ensuing nightmares and erectile dysfunction.
He, like many other authors of the day, was gumming to get his book published and wasn’t having much success with agents or the slush pile. So, using his resourcefulness, his money and a pair of armed six-foot Filipino hit men, he went about circumventing the system.
When I came to, I found my host leaning over me, prodding me with the most gentle of Tasers.“Llyod,” he said, before correcting himself, “Lloyd, I want you to publish my book.” He had a way of underlining words as he spoke.
“B-but…” I stuttered, blinking myself into consciousness.
The room was vast, with wall to wall marble and floor to ceiling walls. In the room’s centre, a gigantic crystal chandelier hung like Damocles’ light-fitting over a Steinway grand piano. At one end of the room a repaired Venus de Milo waved nonchalantly; at the other, Michael Flatley tap-danced inside a soundproof glass box.
“It’s quite simple,” he replied, “I will send you the occasional manuscript and you will publish it.” His argument was compelling, as was the large amount of money he then handed me.
After that we never looked back. Except occasionally to check for Mossad.

#8Sunday #SundaySnips Jacob Lowell
Welcome to Eight Sunday, the blog hop where writers post eight sentences of their work. I finished the first round edits for All Things Returned, the third part of the Anton and Lenora series, this week. Last week, I posted the introduction to Jacob Lowell, a man who causes Lenora a lot of trouble. Here's the next part--
“Well, well,” Jacob said once he had steered me away from Anton, “the little kitten has fallen on her feet after all.” “I have no idea of your meaning, sir.” This was not true. It was clear Jacob meant to insult me and to remind me of the trouble Anton and I had left behind in Rio port when we’d been forced to stop there for repairs. I had, at the time, been unhappily promised to a man named George Settle, who had beaten his first wife and would no doubt have treated me with equal contempt. Mr. Settle had, with Lowell’s help, pursued us to Brazil. We had fled that place, leaving Mr. Settle behind us, dead in a pool of his own blood. His death had been by my hand, and this fact vexed me.

#8Sunday #SundaySnips All Things Returned
Welcome to 8Sunday and Snippet Sunday, the blog hop where writers post eight sentence of writing. This week, I'm most excited to announce that All Things Returned, part 3 of Anton and Lenora, will be coming to an e-book store near you in April of next year.
In this historical romance novella, Anton and Lenora have settled in San Francisco. Trouble, though, is never far away. And, in this case, is named Jacob Lowell.
Here's my eight from All Things Returned--
The cause for the sudden stop of motion revealed himself over Anton’s shoulder, where I was assaulted by the ice blue eyes of a man as fair as Anton was dark. A small smile played about his lips, but the eyes stalked me and were cold and hard as sapphires. I had no need to forage my memory to link a name to this intruder. I knew Jacob Lowell well enough. He was captain of the Willow and his family was well known in New England and well acquainted with my own. Once upon a time, he had been a suitor, though then and now I felt him to be a crass man who had too long been given everything he desired. “May I cut in?” The politeness of his voice did not match the intent in his eyes.

#8Sunday #SundaySnips second eight from The P-Town Queen
Welcome to Sunday 8, the the blog hop where writers post eight sentences of a writing project or a published book.
For today, I thought it might be fun to look back at my books. I recently wrote a blog about The P-Town Queen. I've already posted the opening eight of this book on 8Sunday. But what of those that come after?
So, without further ado, here's Nikki and the second eight sentences of The P-Town Queen.
Ned, a brilliant shark researcher in his own right, had tumbled a long way: to full time administrator of a bullshit state commission. Though to hear Ned say it, it wasn’t a tumble but a reward for all the years he’d spent roughing it on a California channel island—an island that only had electricity every other day— in order to unlock the mystery of white shark feeding behavior. I had spent five years on that island with Ned. We were married at the time. One divorce and one un-granted California grant later, I was back on Cape Cod, in Provincetown, living just off Bradford Street with my father and in dire need of a job. I wrote the (grant) proposal. Then I revved up my resolve, packed away my pride, and called Ned. He agreed to a meeting at the Long Wharf Marriott in Boston.
Thanks for stopping by!

#WTFriday--Dino Porn
Welcome to WTF, the occasional Friday feature where I blog on about some of the weird, wild, and downright stunning things happening on the planet.
If you think I'm sexy..image courtesy of WikimediaIt’s been a while since I’ve done a WTF post, but this particular post needed to be written ASAP. It’s all over the news in book world—Dino Porn, or if you are so inclined, Dino Erotica, is all the rage. That’s right, somebody out there is making up stories about hot chicks and prehistoric creatures and they have become as popular as a Flintstones cartoon in 1969.I write, among other things, quirky comedies. And as a writer of quirk, I’ve put some pretty strange stuff into my fiction, from an exploding dead whale, to a loose wrecking ball, to a dump of single shoes from an airplane. Yet I have never in my wildest dreams considered writing about sex with dinosaurs.
And here’s the thing—I’m not thinking “gee, I wish I’d thought of that” as I so often do when another writer comes up with a brilliant idea. No, my thoughts around this are more “that’s too friggin weird to even consider.”
I’ll admit I’ve been tempted to pick up one of these tomes and read it. Sort of in the same way I’m tempted to watch a man bite the head off a chicken. Because it’s so weird, my curiosity is peaked. But one thing I’ve learned over the course of my lifetime is that it’s not always a good idea to give in to curiosity. Because, face it, once you’ve seen the chicken thing or read the dino thing, no amount of anything will ever get those images out of your head. I’ve got enough weirdness residing in my cerebral cortex, thank you very much.
And now, I’ve read an article that suggests some people are turned on by the idea of getting it on with Deeno the Dino. This too, is something I can never get out of my head. Or wrap my brain around, for that matter.
To my mind, a T-Rex is a lot like an alligator, only a lot bigger and a lot less cuddly. I’ve been to Florida, to a park where you can observe alligators in the wild from a gazebo near the shore of swampy pond. I can honestly say that, as I stood there watching these prehistoric-looking creatures wallow in the mud like so many logs, the thought “Oh baby, I’d love to get down and dirty with those bad boys” never once crossed my mind.
Of course, one could argue that T-Rex is the biggest and baddest of the dino boys. Certainly, there are gentler creatures in the dino world, and you could find a different sort of dino to love, a dino who would not be inclined to gobble you down like a cocktail weenie at a barbeque should you decide to come on to him. A brontosaurus perhaps.
Sweet? Maybe. Sexy? Not so much.To my mind, a brontosaurus is a lot like a steer. On a recent trip to Colorado, I saw many steer grazing in the grass. Again, I can honestly say that, as I watched these gentle creatures munch away, the thought “Look at the shoulders on that hunk of beef over there, he’s sooo hot,” never once crossed my mind. The bottom line is, the idea of inter-species romance kinda makes me squirm and want to rinse out my mouth. Now maybe I’m just uptight, but I think anyone who’s having erotic thoughts about a dinosaur ought to seek help right away. I’m sure there’s a support group out there somewhere.

#8Sunday #SundaySnips: The Hill
Welcome to the Sunday Eight, the blog hop where writers post eight sentences of a writing project or a published book.I'm nearly ready to send Dancing to the White Room back to my editor for another round. The book is a full length women's fiction about the love we keep and what makes it precious.
The main character, Mallory, is a ski patrol woman at Whiteface Mountain, a place she refers to as 'the hill'. Here's a little bit of description--
photo by Tina PhillipsIt’s the last day of February and there’s a heavy fog here this morning that sticks to the mountaintops. The chairlifts disappear into it. Tomorrow, we’ll turn the calendar page, but it won’t be spring here, not yet. Just a mix of cold and the warm trying to get born. Spring comes slowly here, the transition unruly and guarded; more snow, some wind, then the mud will come and muck up our front steps and suck at our boots. Another month will pass and there’ll be a quick step to heat and black flies, while summer waits in the wings. I love this time of year on the hill. The days are longer and warmer, the crowds thin to a die-hard few, the craziness in all of us comes out and we ski in shorts and tank tops, the moguls are thick, the slush like syrup, deep and heavy.
