Quality Transit Time

Schipol

Hanging out at the Continental Breakfast Bar at Schipol Amsterdam waiting to climb on our flight to Helsinki at Gate C10 across the way there. This is probably the highest and best use of the internet ever.

68.6 Degrees North Latitude, Here We Come

MapToLapland

We're starting the long trip north this afternoon with a drive south to Hartsfield Jackson Airport. We'll be at our little cabin in Finland for a few days before heading further north. Photos and reports to come. Happy Holidays to all.

Happy Holidays

Time to put down the internet and step away.

We'll be back to it soon enough, even in time for the last frenzy of college football. When we get back the same advertisers will still implore us to buy. The same pundits will still solve our country's problems. It's even said that people may finally vote caucus in Iowa.

But for just a bit, now, we're headed to a land of foreign language, customs and climate. We'll contemplate the not-frozen-enough lake and count the daylight hours on one hand...

Jet Lag Standing Still

Rarotonga
Leaders have the power to set budgets, try to make the trains run on time, that sort of thing, but the ability to make an entire day completely disappear? THAT's power.

There will be no 30 December in Samoa, or Tokelau, a group of three atolls in the Pacific that are territory of New Zealand. They will redraw the international date line at midnight on 29 December, with both jumping straight to 31 December. It's to facilitate commerce with New Zealand and Australia. Wellington and Sydney...

Havel, Hitchens & Kim

You've probably seen the tweet, "I'd like to think God let Havel and Hitchens pick the third," attributed to @jstrevino. Got it just right.

And I commend to you this fine blog.

Friday Photo Quiz #136 - Where in the World?

Quiz136
I know what you're thinking. Just another big, anonymous city. Yeah, maybe, but take a guess (figure in those mountains) and check the answer after the jump. Bet it's not what you guess.

And a good weekend to all from Common Sense and Whiskey and EarthPhotos.com. We're back on the road (at last) next week.

And the answer is ..................................................... it's Tokyo!

See 942 photos from cities around the world in the Cities Gallery at EarthPhotos.com.

Equine Wednesday HDR

While we're on the topic of northern Europe, here's an HDR from Finland at the opposite time of year. These horses were enjoying a beautiful August afternoon.

Lapland Weather Watch

Two weeks - fourteen days - until our arrival in the far north of Finland, and the weather for the next nine of them is forecast as, at best, mostly cloudy. Snow is forecast most every day. We need clear skies for a shot at seeing the Aurora Borealis. Good news is the forecast has it getting colder closer to our arrival. Colder = a better chance of clearing.

Ivaloforecast

Click for a live webcam at the Ivalo Hotel, in Ivalo, Finland, the airport nearest our destination. Yep, snow. And dark.

And...
