Twenty Five Years Ago Today
The vague nature of this photo matches the feel of the moment, around midnight on 31 December, 1989/1990 at the Brandenburg Gate in Berlin. The wall had been breached on 9 November and the next six or seven weeks led up to this huge celebration. The Wall is still there and those are people standing on it in the distance, in this view from the West toward the East. Champagne, sparklers, fireworks, an American flag – this is one of only two remaining photos I have from a completely thrilling day for a young American.

Solstices in Troms, Norway
Because it’s the short daylight time of year in the north, and because we’re paying attention to the polar regions since in a few months we’ll be up in Svalbard, here’s a side by side look at Troms, Norway at the summer and winter solstices.
Looks like it’s daylight a few hours a day even in the depths of winter up that way.

One Big, Tough President
Nothing wins respect like arresting children for defending the founder of your republic.
Turkish police arrest boy, 16, for insulting Erdogan
The boy’s speech, given to commemorate the killing of a Turkish soldier by Islamists in the 1920s, was recorded on video and broadcast by Dogan News Agency.
In it, he defends secularism and the principles of Mustafa Kemal Ataturk, the founder of the modern Turkish republic.

Friday Photo #7, Australian Exhuberance
This is Cable Beach in Broome, Australia, southwest down the coast from Darwin. They say it’s called Cable Beach because a communications cable leaves from around here somewhere bound for Indonesia across the sea to the north. It’s a small, utterly relaxed, easy going place, thousands of miles from stress, as this man spontaneously expressed one day at dusk. You can’t pose joy.

Cuba Just Got a Little Closer
Today’s announcements in Washington and Havana look likeprogress toward a relationship that makes more sense for The United States and Cuba. Still, let’s all savor this moment before there’s a Red Lobster, Jiffy Lube and Mattress Warehouseon every corner down there.
Have a look at 58 photos of Havana from a 2012 visitin the Cuba Gallery at EarthPhotos.com. And read this brief account of the trip. Our visit was arranged by Insight Cuba.

Nice Christmasy, holiday video from Lviv, Ukraine
Lviv is lovely all decked out for the holidays.
I especially like this photo. It’s a screen grab from the video, which was shot and produced by @MichaelBabich. Nice work.
