Beginning Series of Photos from Kenya

ElephantsAtKilimanjaro

HipposLakeOloiden

Back from ten nights in Amboseli, the Great Rift Valley and the Maasai Mara with a couple thousand photos to cull, I think we’ll start slowly with a photo or two most days as they are added to a new EarthPhotos.com gallery dedicated to the trip. They will all populate the existing EarthPhotos Kenya and Wildlife and various other galleries over time.

Up top, the elephants in Amboseli with the iconic Kilimanjaro just revealing itself. In 2015 it is still hanging on to some snow on top. And then hippos in the tiny Lake Oloiden (means “salty place” in Maasai) near Naivasha in the Rift Valley.

Nice Photo Essay

… reminding those of us who live far away that Moscow is a real place, with real people doing real things, like shopping for food. It’s called “Moscow Has Perfected Grocery Shopping.”

Wildebeest Migration

We’ve spent four days rumbling across the Maasai Mara plains watching the great wildebeest migration. Our trusty guide Richard says it is the largest migration he remembers in his 25 years. The internet speed here in camp is preventing me posting photos, but Patrick, the camp manager, says he has managed to put up some of my photos on Herdtracker. Haven’t seen them, can’t confirm, because I can’t get Herdtracker to load just now, but for now here is one of two kills that happened in the crossing we saw on Monday, and there are many more to work on in the plane home.

Cheers for now.

Meanwhile here in Kenya, today we have left Lake Naivasha for four nights at Governor’s Camp in the Maasai Mara, Kenya. Photos to follow.

A Few Photos from Amboseli

Just a very small selection of low-res photos here from a couple of days in the Amboseli park, Kenya, near Mt. Kilimanjaro. First, some baby baboons and then a cute little baby cheetah and its mother. We spent an hour or so with these two cheetahs and two baby siblings yesterday morning. It was the first time Jonathan, our guide/driver, had seen any of the babies up in the tree.

The Amboseli elephants are famous and for us, relatively abundant. If I got this right, it’s against park rules to get out of the vehicle in the park proper, but we spent some time at dusk the other night with this group of elephants in a conservancy adjacent to the park, where we were able to get out and get this low angle photo.

Then finally is a nine month old male lion we named Porter. Last night, which was our last night at Amboseli this trip, we spent sunset with two female adults, Porter here and a sibling. Kilimanjaro came out of the clouds just at sunset, but that photo is for later.

Cheers to Andrea and Manuela at Tortilis camp, who were terrific hosts.

Onward now, with more photos to come as internet availability allows.

Time to Track Down Some Wildebeests

GreatCircleMap

And now it’s time to go. At high noon we’re off to Toronto Pearson airport (for the second time in two months, somehow) and then on to Nairobi. HerdTracker is watching the great wildebeest migration, and we’re heading over to jump right in. Many photos, I hope, to come. See you from over there.

Friday Photo #36 – Outside the Grand Bazaar, Istanbul

FP36

Here we have an HDR of a springtime morning just outside one of the many entrances to the Grand Bazaar, Sultanahmet, Istanbul, Turkey. No one’s places-visited list is complete without a trip to Istanbul.

There are 386 photos in the Turkey Gallery at EarthPhotos.com. See also 578 more HDR photos.

And see all the Friday Photos.

(At this hour we should be roughly somewhere over the Mediterranean en route to Nairobi for a look at the great wildebeest migration. Depending on upload speeds from the bush, watch for photos here.)

Have a good weekend!
