Deadly Setup - Book Review
Disclosure: I received a free copy of Deadly Setup for this review.

With two voracious readers in the house, I am always on the lookout for books my kids will enjoy. When I was invited to review Deadly Setup, a new release by YA author Lynn Slaughter, the premise of a young adult courtroom thriller intrigued me. I thought it might be something my daughter might like. I was pleasantly surprised to find that it held m...

Artemis - Book Review

What began as a challenge to see if I could win the completely meaningless "read every day for a week" achievement badge from the Kindle app's spiraled into a months-long reading bonanza. Having unlocked all the app bling, I figured I would depart from the usual trend to do a few book reviews.
Artemis is the second novel from Andy Weir, author of The Martian. I thoroughly enjoyed The Martian (and liked the movie even better) ...

Women in War Movies - 2022 Edition

It's become an annual Memorial Day tradition for me to highlight women in war movies, in honor of the soldiers (of all genders) who have given their lives in our conflicts.
You can read past editions of the Women in War series here .
Carve Her Name With Pride
After years of seeing it on search lists about women at war, I finally managed to get a copy of the film Carve Her Name With Pride. Pride is based on the true story of WW2 British spy Violette Szabo. Contemporary with the brave ladies in A Time...

The 355 Review

When I first saw some promo images from The 355, I was stoked. An international team of female spies kicking butt? Top-tier actresses like Lupita Nyong’o, Penélope Cruz, and my personal favorite Jessica Chastain? Sign me up. The trailer didn't disappoint either, even though it gave away too much of the plot.
Long-delayed by covid, the film finally debuted in January to abysmal reviews (a mere 25% fresh on Rotten Tomatoes at last count). Dismayed...

Black Widow Review

Much as I like the character of Natasha Romanoff, it has always been a little hard to buy into her presence among the Avengers. Cap has his super-soldier serum; Iron Man has his suit; Thor has his Asgardian powers; and Hulk is, well, Hulk. Black Widow... has some cool spinning kicks? It's a power differential that strains credulity.
As a solo film, Black Widow was a chance to level the playing field. Instead, we ge...

For All Mankind - Season 2 Review
With the bold move of jumping ahead almost a decade from the end of season 1, For All Mankind was able to shake things up for its vast and diverse cast of characters.
Ed is no longer flying, having taken over Deke's old position as head of the astronaut program. Gordo is a mess, still haunted by his trauma and guilt over the last ...

Keeper of the Lost Cities Review
Today we have a special guest blogger: my daughter "PouncingKitten", who is my very own self-rescuing princess.

Keeper of the Lost Cities by Shanon Messenger is a young adult novel series. It is about a young girl named Sophie, who is pulled away from her life in the human world, and discovers that she is actually an elf.
Two things that make it great are the world and plot. The world is very interesting because it takes place in modern times, but there is a hidden aspect to the entire world that ...

For All Mankind - Season 1 Review

So I logged in to cancel my Apple TV subscription, having not watched anything on it since finishing season 1 of For All Mankind late last year. There I discovered that season 2 was now out! And I also remembered that I had never reviewed season 1, so here we are. A new blog post and a still-not-cancelled Apple TV subscription. (At least not until I'm done with season 2.)
The Never-Ending Space RaceMankind has an intere...

Tales of Arcadia Review

I'll confess, there were more than a few times watching the Tales of Arcadia trilogy that I was completely lost. "Wait, they're teamed up now?" "Hey, is that that same guy from before?" "How did they get there?" The stories are intricate, and they don't lend themselves to missing chunks of episodes while off doing Mom Things. Yet that complexity is also what makes it special.
Arcadia blends elements of fantasy and sci-f...
