And the Winner Is…
By Davalynn Spencer @davalynnspencer
Thank you for participating in last week’s dog’s-life book giveaway and helping me decide what kind of dog I should get next. I’m always interested in hearing what readers think of my stories and characters, and it seems like almost everyone enjoys a good dog tale. (See what I did there?)
Votes for the dog I should have are as follows:
The dog from Snow Angel – 1
Rascal from The Columbine Bride – 1
Roady from As You Are at Christmas – 2
Maverick from Straight to My Heart – 2
Goldie from The Miracle Tree – 1
Blue from An Improper Proposal – 2
Cougar from An Improper Proposal – 1
And the winner is…a tie between Roady and Maverick, the two abandoned dogs, and Blue the heeler. Since I already have Blue, it looks like I’ll need to find a rescue dog that’s looking for a home.
It’s Interesting that the unloved and left-behind hounds tugged at our hearts. Reminds me of what Jesus said about a single lost sheep and how the owner left his large flock of ninety-nine and hunted for the lost one. That’s how much God loves us.
My livestock holdings aren’t that numerous. In fact, I can count them on one hand: Blue the Cowdog and mouse-detector Annie. When I’m not wrangling them, I’m writing stories about #lovingthecowboy.
Currently, I’m working on three novels. I know, just a little bit crazy. One is a contemporary romantic-suspense that is an absolute story-of-my-heart with a dog named Cree, a heeler mix that belongs to the cowboy-cop hero.
Another book-in-the-making is titled Mail-Order Misfire, and it’s slated for a September release as part of a multi-author historical Thanksgiving collection.
The third novel is Book 3 of the Front Range Brides series, and it will be Sophie’s story. For those of you who have read Books 1 and 2, you know who I’m talking about.
Sophie’s family has a dog named Dudley. However, I don’t know what type of dog he is.
Just for fun, what kind of dog do you think fits the name Dudley? It has to be a breed accessible to people in the American West in the 1880s.
For you researchers out there, how creative can you get?
I’d love to hear your ideas in the comments below!
Thanks for reading!
The randomly chosen winner from among last week’s commenters was Carolsue. Please contact me about your free copy of The Miracle Tree.
Almost everyone enjoys a good dog tale.

And then she saw the little blue heeler pup sitting quietly on its haunches, pointed ears alert.
“What about him?”
“You mean her.” The caretaker opened the gate and knelt before the puppy that licked her extended hand and attempted to wag its stubby tail.
“This one’s a keeper, I tell you. If someone doesn’t take her, I’m going to talk my husband into it.” She looked up with a guilty expression. “That’s the downside of working here. I keep taking home the orphans.”
Laura held out a hand, and the puppy showered her with kisses as well.
“Does she have a name?”
“Not yet.” The woman stood and pulled the gate closed, then moved on to the next kennel. The puppy yipped once. Laura took a step back and peeked around the wall. The little dog sat with its head cocked to one side, those sharp ears pointed skyward. Intelligent eyes bore into Laura’s and seemed to promise protection and companionship.
“I’ll take her.”

It’s A Dog’s-Life and A Giveaway
By Davalynn Spencer @davalynnspencer
As an author, I tend to fall in love with some of my characters, including the animal characters. For my inspirational-Western-romance books, this means I’m collecting horses and dogs, metaphorically speaking.
However, I may be collecting a real-life hound companion for Blue the Cowdog in the next several months, and I can’t help but look back on all the dogs in my books. Trouble is, I want them all!
That’s not going to happen unless I move to a much larger house and win a couple train-loads of dog food. Until then, I’ll have to settle on one new canine companion.
That’s where you and the Dog’s-Life Giveaway come in.
I’d love to know which of my character dogs you’d choose for me, so I’m asking you to tell me in the comments below.
*Everyone who comments with a suggestion will be entered for a chance to win a free copy of The Miracle Tree, my 2018 contemporary romance release. Contest open through midnight, January 20, with winner announced on January 21 blog. *
Here are my character dogs, in order of appearance:
Roady, an ugly but grateful wire-haired mongrel rescued alongside a highway in As You Are at Christmas.
Maverick, an abandoned border collie-type in Straight to my Heart.
Beetle, an intelligent, mind-of-it’s-own spotted hero-dog in The Snowbound Bride.
Rascal, a mix-breed puppy in The Columbine Bride.
Rusty, a red cowdog in The Wrangler’s Woman.
Blue, a heeler in An Improper Proposal. (Sound like anyone you know?)
Cougar, a houndish-retriever mix from An Improper Proposal.
Pearl, half-wolfhound, sparkle-loving monstrosity from An Unexpected Redemption.
Goldie, an aging and faithful golden retriever in The Miracle Tree.
Chica, a heeler pup in The Miracle Tree.
The dog, a silvery, wolfish/husky-type canine from Snow Angel.
In all my books, there have been only two cats, Pete and Re-pete, from The Miracle Tree. I think my mouse detector, Oakley, is displeased with me. She has not once offered to help bring in firewood this winter, but I did catch her stalking something behind the rakes and shovels stored in the garage.
Back to the dogs – if you’d like to see how I envision these heart-stealing canines before making a recommendation, you can find them all on my Pinterest page in their specific book boards: (Pete and Repete are even on there!)
Thank you helping me out with this. And thank you for reading!

Are We Storing the Light?
By Davalynn Spencer @davalynnspencer
Solar lights mark the junction of my driveway with the main road. On sunny days, they collect enough energy to cast a soft glow after dark, lighting the entrance to our drive. I never have to turn them on and they cost me nothing to operate. They are always storing the light.
Unless the weather plays against me. On cloudy days, the tiny solar cells collect no energy and have nothing to share in the dark that evening.
I operate in much the same way. Some days I’m bright and shiny, on others I’m dull and gloomy. It all depends on what I’ve been collecting.
Unlike our solar lights, God’s light is indifferent to the weather. It doesn’t matter if emotional storms cloud my heart, His stores of truth and wisdom remain inexhaustible. The more I have on reserve, the brighter my own light shines. But if I’m too busy, anxious, or depressed to soak up the hope and comfort of His word, darkness washes in around me.
Darkness is manifested in different ways but is constant in its makeup: it is the absence of light. That’s why it cannot overwhelm or dominate light, no matter how small that light may be. Even a tiny flicker glows bravely against the blackest void.
The scriptures tell us that there is no darkness at all in God – no absence of light – for He is light. When Light took life by the hand and stepped into our world, color and warmth weren’t far behind.
God’s first choice of creative expression was light. He spoke it, and it became. Read the Genesis account of creation and note that light appeared three days before God set the sun and moon upon their courses and flung the stars into space.
Light shines throughout all the scriptures, glittering from the face of Moses, pulsing through the visions of Isaiah, and blinding the eyes of a fervent fanatic named Paul who gained more than his sight when he opened his heart.
Jesus said, “I am the light of the world,” (John 8:12b).
May His light shine from us in this new year. When we are backed against the wall and squeezed, may His radiance leak out through the cracks in our lives.
Let’s recharge our soul-cells with the Son Light of God by opening His word and filling up with His life-giving light.
Arise, shine, for your light has come (Isaiah 60:1 NIV).
Recharge your soul-cell with the Son Light of God.

The parson placed his hand atop theirs and offered a final word on the matter. “‘The Lord bless thee, and keep thee: The Lord make his face shine upon thee, and be gracious unto thee: The Lord lift up his countenance upon thee, and give thee peace.’ Amen.”
Smiling as if pleased with himself, Bittman completed the brief ceremony. “I now pronounce you man and wife. You may—”

Forget New Year’s Resolutions
By Davalynn Spencer @davalynnspencer
I don’t like New Year’s resolutions. The distaste has to do with the word “resolution.” It reminds me of my days as a reporter covering government meetings where resolutions were merely formal declarations of opinions and intentions without any formal action.
In other words, nothing happened.
So, let’s forget New Year’s resolutions and pick more definitive words like “goals” or “plans” if we want to make a change or accomplish something in the days and months ahead.
Often, goals for the new year are oversized and imposing: Lose fifty pounds. Read through the Bible. Walk five miles every morning.
Such overwhelming challenges can weigh us down before we even get started.
However, if we approach those goals with smaller, doable steps, the seemingly unattainable can be reached.
Over the years, I’ve learned that if I place a goal out in front of me where I can see it, I’m more likely to get there. This can mean I write it down in a journal or, better yet, post it somewhere in plain view. Pictures work great if the goal is a vacation destination, a piece of furniture for the house, or landscaping changes.
I’ve also learned that if I create an action plan for reaching or acquiring my goal, I can build a pathway of measurable and obtainable steps. Without breaking the goal into smaller pieces, I’m likely to be overwhelmed and give up on it.
Goals and action plans look different for everyone, but a few key points are universal:
Post the goal prominently where you can see it every day.
Assign a desired date of completion or acquisition.
Break the pathway to the goal into reachable, quantifiable steps. These may also have dates associated with them.
Many years ago, I had a goal of reading the book of Proverbs every month. Sounds like a mouthful, but it was very doable.
There are thirty-one chapters in Proverbs, one for every day of the month. Every morning, I read the chapter matching the day, Chapter One on the first, Chapter Two on the second, and so on. If I missed a day, I did NOT read two chapters to “catch up.” I simply went on to the chapter for the next day, and I never felt overwhelmed.
The following month, I started over with Chapter One. The practice became so automatic and enjoyable, that I not only continued for the rest of that year, but for several years thereafter, lodging quotable scripture references and bits of wisdom in my heart without even trying. Feeding regularly on God’s word has amazing benefits for life.
I have a few goals for 2019, and most of them have to do with my writing career. For example, I want seven of my eleven books to be available as audio books. This takes path-planning on my part, with a little map building so I know what each step looks like.
If I stay on the trail, I’ll be sharing this accomplishment with you readers, so everyone ends up benefitting.
What goals do you have for 2019? I’d love to read about them in the comments below!
May yours be a blessed New Year following the One who goes before us.
I have set the Lord always before me;
because He is at my right hand,
I shall not be moved.
Psalm 16:8
Forget New Year’s resolutions.

Christmas Blessings to You!
By Davalynn Spencer @davalynnspencer
This year I’d like to share with you one of my Cowboy’s favorite Christmas songs.
Christmas blessings to you and yours~
“Christmas for Cowboys”
Tall in the saddle we spend Christmas Day
Driving the cattle over snow covered plains
All of the good gifts given today
Ours is the sky and the wide open range
Back in the cities they have different ways
Football and eggnog and Christmas parades
I’ll take my blanket, I’ll take the reins
It’s Christmas for cowboys, wide open plains
A campfire for warmth as we stop for the night
The stars overhead are Christmas tree lights
The wind sings a hymn as we bow down to pray
It’s Christmas for cowboys and wide open plains
It’s tall in the saddle we spend Christmas Day
Driving the cattle over snow covered plains
So many gifts have been opened today
Ours is the sky and the wide open range
It’s Christmas for cowboys, wide open plains
~
And there were in the same country shepherds abiding in the field, keeping watch over their flock by night. Luke 2:8

Unfurling the Future One Day at a Time
By Davalynn Spencer @davalynnspencer
A couple thousand years ago, God told a young Jewish girl named Mary that she would give birth to His son, the Messiah, conceived by the Holy Spirit. That’s quite a life-changing announcement.
But do you think He told her that she’d have the baby in a barn, stall, or cave – whatever was available? Away from her family and home. Essentially by herself.
We don’t know if He did or not. But one thing we can be certain of, Mary trusted Him to be with her wherever and whenever the event occurred.
Such is the way God unfurls the future for us too. He knows how much we can handle, and it isn’t much.
A friend of mine says she sees God’s hand in her life but not His plan. I understand her frustration of wanting to see farther down the road. Details – give me details!
However, God still knows what we can handle. And the biggest truth we need to cling to is that He can handle it all.
~
“Don’t be afraid, Mary,” the angel told her, “for you have found favor with God! You will conceive and give birth to a son, and you will call him Jesus. He will be very great and will be called the Son of the Most High” (Luke 1:30-32).
God still knows what we can handle.

The night was clear and cold, sparkling like the angel cookies as everyone filed into the church. It seemed a larger crowd than before, and they pressed into the main room, filling the pews and standing along the back wall near a stately spruce. With barely contained childish anticipation lacing the atmosphere, Pastor Thornton wisely kept his message brief, ending with mention of Lena’s favorite carol.
“‘Silent night, holy night,’ the song writer penned. I suppose one out of two isn’t bad. Unless that blessed Infant was sleeping, I doubt it was a silent night in Bethlehem’s stable.” ~Snow Angel

What do we have that we haven’t received?
By Davalynn Spencer @davalynnspencer
‘Tis the season of giving, right?
Or is it the season of getting?
“Six o’ one, half dozen of the other,” Mama used to say. But always she added, “We give at Christmas because God gave us Jesus.”
I grew up hearing that and I still believe it, regardless of how commercial Christmas has become. Regardless of whether we celebrate Christ’s birth on the right date. Regardless of those who don’t agree.
However, I think even the Ebenezer Scrooges in the world must admit that every good thing we have has been given to us, whether directly or indirectly.
Start with life. Did we generate that ourselves?
Families, friendships, a home, job, daily necessities. Each of these can be traced back through our hand to that of another and, ultimately, to God who gives us the ability, skills, talents, and opportunities to earn money, create, love, build.
Okay, I admit it. There are a few things I’ve come up with on my own. Headaches. Fear. Worry, distrust, greed.
Therefore, I choose to focus on what I’ve been given – all the good gifts, whether big or small, many or few. Gratitude warms my life and keeps my heart open to receive so I can give.
The opportunities are endless.
“Every good and perfect gift is from above, coming down from the Father of heavenly lights who does not change like shifting shadows” (James 1:17 KJV).

National Cookie Day – and a Give-away!
By Davalynn Spencer @davalynnspencer
Tomorrow is National Cookie Day. I am certain the day of national recognition was determined with me in mind. As far as I’m concerned, Cookie Day is right up there with Mother’s Day and birthdays.
I can easily turn down pie or cake. Doughnuts do nothing for me at all, unless they’re “bear sign.” But cookies? Oh my.
Especially frosted Christmas cookies, as in gingerbread men, stars, snowflakes, rocking horses…
Therefore, it’s quite natural that cookies play an important role in my Christmas novella, Snow Angel. So do cookie cutters.
Here’s a photo of some of my mother’s old cutters that she passed down to me. If you’d like to read more about antique cookie cutters, check out my blog post here on Heroes, Heroines, and History titled, “Shaping the Holidays One Cookie at a Time.”
Of course, there are all kinds of cookies, but the “Rolled Cookies” page in my cookbook has more stains on it than any other. Every year, my children and I made batch after batch of sugar cookie dough, then cut and decorated myriad shapes.
We also made spritz “press” cookies, chocolate chip “drop” cookies, gingerbread men, and twisted red and white “candy cane” cookies.
Everyone seems to have a favorite. My mother liked persimmon cookies best. Favorite cookies have even been categorized by state, and this link will take you to the Reader’s Digest list of fifty state holiday choices, recipes included.
This week, in honor of National Cookie Day, I’m giving away two copies of my Christmas novella, Snow Angel. Winners will be randomly chosen from people who comment on this blog in the comment section below. All you have to do is leave your email address and tell me your favorite cookie. If you’d rather not leave your email address here, you can send it via Messenger or email.
The contest will run through Friday, Dec. 7 at midnight, and I will announce the winner in next Monday’s blog.
Until then, bake up a batch of your favorite cookies and share with someone you love.
“He satisfies the thirsty and fills the hungry with good things” (Psalm 107:9 NLT).

As he neared the kitchen, the smell of gingerbread drew him back to childhood and the warmth of his ma’s quick hug after she’d give him a couple of ginger cookies. One for each hand, she always said…
…He held Lena’s hand until her eyes opened, shining like a spring puddle after rain. Words deserted him. Giving a quick squeeze, he let go and stepped back.
She didn’t speak, but she didn’t shy away either. Just stood looking down at the apron she’d bunched.
Hope lurched.
The dog scratched at the door, shattering the moment. Fool animal had pitiful timing.
Lena snickered and gave him two broken cookies off the tray.
He smiled. “One for each hand?”
“No. One for the dog.”
At least she hadn’t chewed him out for taking liberties. But he’d meant no disrespect. Just the opposite.
He followed the dog outside, missing Lena something fierce, and he wasn’t even gone yet. Pulling in a cold draught, he took in the sky, clear as glass. The sun bright, sparkling on the fresh white blanket that lay smooth across the fields. Perfect for making snow figures.

A Christmas Shopping Guide for Men (and women)
By Davalynn Spencer @davalynnspencer
Other than his ma, he’d never given a woman anything but a hard time.
–Wil Bergman, Snow Angel
Christmas-gift shopping is often a man’s least-favorite activity. I speak from the experience of living with a husband and son. To be completely transparent, I speak from the experience of living with a daughter who doesn’t much care for the event either.
Which makes me wonder if they all caught that virus from me.
Nevertheless, in my historical Christmas novella, the hero, Wil Bergman, wants to give a Christmas gift to the woman he’s falling for, but he hasn’t a clue what to get her. Hence the quote at the top of this post. Can’t you just imagine a guy like that?
However, Wil comes up with a couple of ideas based on his observations of the woman he fancies.
In other words, he pays attention.
In the real world, we don’t always pay attention to people we’ve grown accustomed to. We don’t always see the obvious.
When my husband and I were first married, I gave him a 3×5 card listing a few of my personal favorites, as well as clothing and shoe sizes, and color preferences. I intended it to serve as a reference for him, a guide.
He carried that folded card in his wallet for so many years that it fell apart. But it served its purpose. It gave him a starting point, a bit of direction and confidence in our consumer-driven economy.
Today, plastic gift-cards are all the rage. Easy, mailable, quick and painless. I admit, I’ve bought them for family members when I had no clue what they might like – especially those in high school.
But it almost hurts my heart to do so. Maybe I’m old-fashioned, but I remember the days when gifts were actual gifts not tagged with the mantra, “You can get what you want.”
Gift-giving comes with the risk of rejection. Gift-receiving comes with the need for grace – grace to warmly receive rather than belittle a giver’s choice of present.
Gifts don’t have to be costly or large or fancy or extravagant. They don’t even have to be things. They can be events or moments. Time is one of the most underrated gifts of all.
The Christmas shopping season is already upon us. Let’s make this year’s expressions of love and gratitude true expressions and forget about trying to make impressions.
You must each decide in your heart how much to give.
And don’t give reluctantly or in response to pressure.
“For God loves a person who gives cheerfully”
(2 Corinthians 9:7 NLT).
~
Time is one of the most underrated gifts of all.

Talk at the supper table lately had been about gettin’ ready for Christmas Eve at the church and the big feed here the next day. Wil was halfway to his eight-week mark and itching to get shuck of his cast in more ways than one. He’d gone to running a thin branch down inside the plaster to scratch what itched.
Trouble was, that twig didn’t do him a lick of good when it came to Lena Carver. She was an itch he couldn’t reach. Four weeks and he’d be bunking at the livery, missing her quick wit and smile. Her good cooking. The music of her laughter.
It was harder and harder to be around her and not spill his oats right there in front of her, Doc, and the good Lord all at the same time. ~Snow Angel

In Everything Give Thanks
By Davalynn Spencer @davalynnspencer
Thanksgiving Day is fast approaching. Many people are busy cooking, cleaning, and preparing for a big family feed. Others are wondering who they’ll spend the day with, or they’re missing lost loved ones. Some are dreading the pending presence of a certain relative or acquaintance.
Whether you spend the week in busy anticipation or not, take a moment today and write a list of all the things for which you are thankful. I encourage you to actually get a piece of paper and a pencil or pen and write a list.
At the top of the paper make three column headings:
People Things Answered Prayer
Aim for at least five entries in each column, and then share one with us here in the comments below.
Have a blessed week and may all that you do be full of thanksgiving.
~
I will give thanks to you, Lord, with all my heart; I will tell of all your wonderful deeds. Psalm 9:1
