Geek Gathering Recap

selfiezeus

I’m a few days behind on doing this recap. Last weekend I went to the Geek Gathering in Sheffield, AL. It’s a small con in its third year with a costume contest, live music, and lots of awesome vendors. I attended with my sister-in-law, cover designer and illustrator Carly Strickland.

Here’s our table:

Our tables at these events keep changing because we’re always trying new things. The cardboard cutout you’re looking at is a promotional piece for the Olympia Heights: Lightning Rod Kickstarter.

Pop Primer Video: Banned Books Week

popvideo

I made a video for Banned Books Week. It’s party of a video series for a new website, Pop Culture Primer. I’ve been writing there for a few weeks, and it’s pretty awesome.

What is Pop Primer? Well, the site is the brainchild of my friend Matt Cox—something I decided to donate my internet skills to because I wanted to see it happen. Matt is a scholar, studying English Literature with a focus on popular culture. He loves to look at things like video games through an academic lens, and I think th...

Facebook Just Hobbled Author Pages

A recent update from the Rafflecopter blog highlights a big change to Facebook’s policy. In November 2014, new apps will no longer be allowed to “Fangate” content. This explicitly includes requiring people to Like a Facebook page in order to enter a giveaway. What does that mean? Rafflecopter, Gleam, and other third-party contest widgets have three months to remove features that include “Like My Page” as a method of entry.

Organic Reach is Dying

Now I don’t know about you, but I found giveaways...

HP Lovecraft Was Really Freakin’ Racist

Have you ever seen The Jungle Book? As an adult, do you find yourself still singing bits of “I Wanna Be Like You” and “Bear Necessities”? Would it spoil your childhood to know that the author behind the source material, Rudyard Kipling, was really freakin’ racist?

I’m all for boycotting bigots, authors whose cognitive distortions cause them to spew forth hateful, paranoid diatribe. As much as I love Ender’s Game, I won’t purchase another book by Orson Scott Card while he’s living because he’s...

How NOT to Fulfill a Kickstarter

I’ve backed 34 Kickstarters since summer 2012. I’ve also run a successful campaign as well as a failure. By no means does that make me the expert on Kickstarter, but it does give me more experience than many, and today I’d like to continue my series of articles on Kickstarter with a little cautionary advice. Usually I give advice on what to do: how toplan a backer video, where to promote your project, how to optimize your project for mobile. Today I’m going to give you some advice about what...

Kindle News: The Democratization of the Preorders

What was a pretty stressful day just turned into the best day ever! Hyperbole aside, the news is a game-changer for independent authors. Kindle Direct Publishing has just started sending out news to its authors that preordering has arrived for all! This moment, which I will from now on refer to the Democratization of the Preorders, has taken a HUGE step to level the playing field between traditionally published authors and independents.

Yes, Nook and Kobo had this feature, but most indie author...
