Six Months In (part 1)
Greetings, everyone.
I released my first book (The Voided Man) in May, and so November marks six months for me in the world of self publishing. I’ve learned a great deal in half a year, and I’m going to create a few posts this month to share some of it. In a few weeks I’ll resume talking about books that I’m working on or that will soon be released.
In my first post back in June, I characterized myself as the last man on the bench on a single-A minor league baseball team. At that time, I’d sold about 40 books, and almost all of those sales were to people I know personally. Six months in, I would rate myself as a starter on a double-A team. I’m a long way from the majors, but I’ve sold a couple of thousand books now, and I feel like I understand the KDP game much better.
But on to specific things I’ve learned. I have a top ten list, which will be divided over three blog posts.
1. You can write more than you think you can.
I have found writing output to be no different than running. If you haven’t been to the track for a long time and you show up with fresh-out-of-the-box shoes, you will probably get winded fairly quickly. But if you get back up there night after night, you can build up stamina in a surprisingly short amount of time.
Writing is the same, I’ve found. I’m turning out more than twice as many words per day than I did in the beginning, and it doesn’t seem burdensome. It doesn’t feel like I’m sacrificing anything that matters or burning out my brain or anything negative. It feels like I’ve been going to the track regularly and I can turn out easy quarter miles and a lot of them.
2. Reviewers are generally nice.
I read all of my reviews, and they’re very helpful. The ones that are most enjoyable to read, of course, are from people who loved one of my books. But even the reviewers who didn’t particularly like a story usually have constructive comments that I can get something out of. If you think of writing, or if you’ve written something but are reluctant to put it out there because of a fear of the public square, my experience has been that it is generally a supportive place.
3. You have to build a schedule.
Writing needs to be a habit, and your brain needs to know when it’s “writing time”. Part of getting more productive for me has been establishing that morning writing time is 8:00 and that evening writing time is 7:00.
It doesn’t matter what your schedule looks like specifically, I don’t think. It just needs to be consistent. And the schedule I’m talking about is for the creation of new material for the books you are working on. I edit and blog and work on ad campaigns and all sorts of things related to the books at random times, but building the new content happens at set times, and that seems to make a meaningful positive difference.
That’s it for this week. More of my top ten list of what I’ve learned in my first six months of self publishing in a week or so.
Thank you for taking an interest in my writing.

The Voided Man, Book 4
Greetings, all.
Book 4 in the Voided Man series - Navigating Yesterday - comes out on Sunday.
If you are someone who has read the others, you'll get new backstory on the Last King of the West, and how the Realm originated, and more on Jack and Laura's unusual romance and what happens with Alexis as she grows up during the years that Banner is adrift in the Valkyrie-98.
If you are new to my fiction, this is actually a good book to use to start the Voided Man series. You'll catch more of the references if you've read the other books, but you won't be unable to enjoy Navigating Yesterday if you haven't.
The question I explore in the new book is this: in the aftermath of an apocalypse, what does it look like when pockets of civilization start to return and stabilize? I've spent a lot of time thinking about how technology and commerce and governance might work in that scenario, and also about the threats that might arise from places where civilization has not returned.
The Potato isn't finished as a setting by any means, but Number One and the others will be spending a lot of time on Earth in the forthcoming books in the series, and so Navigating Yesterday reveals what things are like in 30th Century America.
Also in the mix are two good love stories, one old and one brand new. Two new villains – Chancellor Bain and Lord Jeffrey – arise as well and cause trouble. And Bucky is back. Everybody loves that horse, including me.
Half of my advance readers rated Navigating Yesterday as their favorite book in the series so far. Small sample size, true, but encouraging nonetheless.
For my fantasy fans, the conclusion of the Clock and the Candles trilogy will be out December 1, and it's all hands on deck for the conspirators as they make a real run at ousting Adolphus from power. There's much more on the elves in book 3 as well.
And I call it a trilogy, but I'm sure that the Lands and the Clock and the characters who survive book 3 will be back. I just haven't decided whether their series will run straight ahead like the Voided Man, or whether I'll end up breaking their adventures into discrete trilogies. That could go either way.
Last note for now: I'll release one more Voided Man book before the end of the year. Book 5, The Valkyrie-200, will be out on December 15.
Thank you for taking an interest in my writing.

Early October Update
Greetings, everyone. This is my beginning of the month update on everything going on with my two series.
The Clock and the Candles
Book 2 – The Clock and the Talisman – is out today. I will be running a Goodreads Giveaway with a chance to win autographed copies starting October 10.
Everybody is back in this one, and the conspiracy is joined by an imprisoned miner, an elderly prospector, a pair of new elves (one thin and mild mannered, the other enormously musclebound and heavily tattooed), and a young woman who has crossed an evil Brotherhood in the Northlands. I will be running a Goodreads Giveaway for autographed copies starting October 10.
There are three problems for the good guys in these tales, and each book in the trilogy mostly focuses on one of them.
Problem 1: Gwen is held in the Prison Maximus. The conspirators see what they can do about that in book 1 – The Clock and the Candles.
Problem 2: The Ebony Clock presents all kinds of trouble, both for members of the conspiracy and for everyone else in the Lands. The Clock and the Talisman is about two quests to get the clock under control, and they're tough.
Problem 3: King Adolphus. If there is to be peace in the Lands, The Usurper has to go. The last book in the trilogy – The Clock and the Crown – details the conspiracy's conflict with him and how it turns out, and maybe how they deal with a few new problems presented by the Ebony Clock. It will be out December 1, and it will be available for preorder later today.
The love stories feature in all three books, of course.
The Voided Man
Book 4 – Navigating Yesterday – releases on October 27. In the book, we learn a great deal about Jack's quest to learn enough medicine to save Laura in an age of very primitive technology, about Alexis' time at the Valkyrie School, about Maestro, and about Lord Jeffrey, a new villain who is causing all kinds of problems in the 30th Century. And that's just in the first hundred pages.
I've got book 5 just about done, and I'll be able to get it out by the end of the year – probably around mid December. That one will be called The Valkyrie-200.
That's my update for early October. Thank you for taking an interest in my writing.

Featured Characters out of Nowhere
First of all, greetings to my new followers. An author's greatest fear may be going unnoticed, and I appreciate anyone who takes the time to read my books or blog posts. Thanks as well to anyone who has reviewed any of my novels - I learn a great deal from reading those.
I have just finished the draft of Voided Man 6. Al narrates that one (for those of you new to The Voided Man, I have a new narrator for each installment in the series) and I have been thinking this evening about how far he has come as a character.
I first thought of Al as a way to let Prisoner Number One engage in dialogue out in the void, but he took on a life of his own early in the drafting of the original book. It seemed to me like he wanted to be a bigger part of the story, and I started beefing up his parts, much to the tale's benefit.
All of the books have one or two characters like that who almost promoted themselves from the role of bit character to lead character. It is the most interesting phenomenon I have encountered so far in my first year of writing a lot of fiction.
Quick updates. There is a Goodreads Giveaway for autographed copies of The Clock and the Candles from now through 9/27. I'll probably do a similar giveaway for The Voided Man next month.
And speaking of October, I'll be releasing two new books then. Clock 2 (The Clock and the Talisman) on 10/5 and then Voided Man 4 (Navigating Yesterday) on 10/27. Both are up for preorders now.
Thank you for taking an interest in my writing.

Early September Update
Greetings.
I wanted to post an update to different happenings in the worlds of The Voided Man and The Clock and the Candles.
The first time sensitive item is that at the time I am writing this (9/3, about 9PM), there is a little more than 24 hours remaining in my Goodreads Giveaway of signed physical copies of The Clock and the Candles. I plan to run a similar giveaway for signed copies of The Voided Man later in the month.
The second time sensitive item is that the ebook version of The Clock and the Candles will be free to anyone on Amazon on Thursday, September 5th. Spread the word, and pick up a copy for yourself if you haven't tried my fantasy.
The third Voided Man book - Beyond the Lemon Tree Moon - publishes on Sunday. I'll be posting the fourth book in the series for preorder shortly thereafter. That one will be called Navigating Yesterday, and it will release the first week of November.
The second book in the fantasy series, which is called The Clock and the Talisman, is up for preorder now. Check out the cover for that one here on Goodreads or on Amazon - I think it turned out great.
The drafts are moving along, and I should have Clock 3 out in December and Voided Man 5 out in early January. Sales are picking up, and I truly am having a great deal of fun with all of this.
Thank you for taking an interest in my writing.

Science Fiction vs. Fantasy
Greetings.
I want to start by thanking everyone who has reviewed either of my released books. I've received some very encouraging words from people I don't know personally over the last couple of weeks in reviews posted on Amazon or Goodreads, and they are noticed and very much appreciated.
My fantasy novel The Clock and the Candles releases on Saturday, and I wanted to write for a little while tonight about my thought process as I've placed stories in the science fiction or the fantasy genre. It mostly boils down to how much focus I want to place on the tech, or on the items with unusual abilities.
The Voided Man books are heavy on technology that may not fully exist yet, but which I've thought about a great deal and can describe in detail. And so, into the sci fi category they go, against a backdrop of deep space and the distant future and so on.
The Clock and the Candles books have technology as well, but it's lost tech that is poorly understood in some cases, and which may be actual magic in a few cases. I have some notions of how it might work, but they are less specific than the ideas I have in science fiction stories. And so, into the fantasy category they go, against a backdrop of kings and queens and swordplay and perhaps an elf or two.
What is consistent with my fiction in all genres is that it features decent people who try to do what they think is right in difficult circumstances. There is also always a lot of dialogue, always a love story somewhere in the mix, and always a scene or two that make me laugh, and that I hope my readers find amusing as well.
The one specific thing I'll say about new book is that I've gone into more detail with the bad guys this time. They're pretty awful. But that doesn't necessarily mean they can't be bested...
If you have enjoyed one or both of The Voided Man books, I think you'll enjoy The Clock and the Candles, even if you usually only read sci fi.

Adding a Second Genre
My first fantasy novel went live on Amazon for preorder earlier this evening. The book is The Clock and the Candles, and it will be released on August 10.
I make a strong English Breakfast tea early almost every morning. I like to sit around for a little while after sunrise and sip and let my mind wander. During one of those sessions in early June, I started to think about a new character named Roland. I didn't know anything about him other than that he worked as the Keeper of the Clock, and that he had just received an anonymous letter. For whatever reason, I knew that the letter said this:
Dear Roland,
Consider five statements. Three of them are true. Two of them are lies.
1. You are the last of your kind.
2. King Adolphus is an immortal being.
3. The creatures who walk the Lands after sunset serve no master.
4. Gwenivere's prison was not constructed according to specifications.
5. The Ebony Clock is not connected to anything at all.
Sort the truth from the lies, and you will be free.
I wondered if Roland might be a new addition to my Voided Man universe, but it soon became apparent that he was a co-star in a whole new story.
I'm very happy with how the first book has turned out. I'm about a third of the way through drafting the second book in the series, and I think all three of them will be out before the end of the year.
And fear not, Voided Man fans. I am hard at work on that series as well. Book 3 (Beyond the Lemon Tree Moon) will release on September 8, and the draft of Book 4 is nearly finished. I expect to release that one in November.

Doing Many Things at Once
First off, a heartfelt thank you to anyone who has read The Voided Man. The feedback I have received has been generally favorable, and I express my gratitude. I don’t know if other new writers fear being booed off the stage, but it has certainly crossed my mind as a possibility.
I have spent a lot of the time since my last blog post working on marketing. There is a Goodreads Giveaway that ends on July 11 for Ascending the Hourglass, which is the second book in my Voided Man series. Enter for chance to win a free copy if you haven't already. I've also been tinkering with ads on Amazon quite a bit. But readers don't want to hear too much about things like that, I am sure.
What have I been writing? Lots!
Ascending the Hourglass will be out on Wednesday. If you liked The Voided Man, you'll like it. I've continued the story, upped the action in places, and it has a new love story that I think turned out very well.
I am nearing the finish line with Book 3 of the Voided Man, although that will probably not be my next release. I am also nearing the finish line on the first book in a new fantasy series that I plan to publish at the same time as the Voided Man books. I know what the title is, but I don't want to reference specifics until I've registered copyrights and things like that. My tentative timeline for releases after this week is:
Late August: new fantasy series, Book 1
September: Voided Man, Book 3
Fourth Quarter, 2024: Voided Man, Book 4 and new fantasy series, Book 2
Thank you for taking an interest in my writing.

6/11: Starting Out
The Voided ManGreetings, everyone. I'm Anthony Dean, a 51 year old rookie novelist.
I am a longtime author of textbooks, and for many years, I have aspired to write novels, but I did not actually finish anything until recently.
My youngest child went off to college last fall, and I found myself with an abundance of time on my hands. I got a good idea for a story, started writing, and completed The Voided Man earlier this spring. I published it on KDP at the end of May.
I'm delighted that I have finished and completed a novel, but I want more than a story that is read by friends and family. I have come to care about Prisoner Number One. He is a good and decent man who meets impossible circumstances with bravery and dignity and hope. I'd like for his story to circulate widely, and I think readers will enjoy it.
I am a baseball nerd, and to put my current position as a novelist in baseball terms: I am in the minors. And not AAA "one call from the show" minors, oh no. I am in single-A ball playing in front of small crowds, and I am not a starter. I am the backup third baseman.
But that's OK. I paid my dues in my day job, and I don't mind paying my dues in this venture.
One note: I have never blogged before. In point of fact, I have never been on social media of any kind. It just hasn't been part of my world. If I make any errors in presentation, it's just because I don't know anything.
And so, a journey of a thousand miles starts with one step and all that. Here I go.
