Random Song Invasion: Purple People Eater

Okay, here’s the thing.  I wake up most mornings with random songs in my head for no reasons that I can explain.  My alarm clock does not sing songs to me, it beeps most annoyingly, so it’s not that.  I don’t have the radio going at night, so there are no subliminal tunes working their way in.  There is no explanation for the songs I wake up with.  In fact, I really need to start keeping a journal.

Maybe they mean something.

Hmmm… in any case, a couple of days ago, I woke up with a weirder one than usual.  Now, if you are my age of forty—-something—- you should know this one.  In fact, most likely, you had a dance or something played out for it.  No?  That was just me and my friends?  Yeah, okay, I believe you… (not)

THE PURPLE PEOPLE EATER

Well I saw the thing comin’ out of the sky

It had the one long horn, one big eye

I commenced to shakin’ and I said “ooh-eee”

It looks like a purple eater to me

It was a one-eyed, one-horned, flyin’ purple people eater

(One-eyed, one-horned, flyin’ purple people eater)

A one-eyed, one-horned, flyin’ purple people eater

Sure looks strange to me (One eye?)

Well he came down to earth and he lit in a tree

I said Mr. Purple People Eater, don’t eat me

I heard him say in a voice so gruff

I wouldn’t eat you cuz you’re so tough

It was a one-eyed, one-horned, flyin’ purple people eater

One-eyed, one-horned flyin’ purple people eater

One-eyed, one-horned, flyin’ purple people eater

Sure looks strange to me (One horn?)

I said Mr. Purple People Eater, what’s your line

He said it’s eatin’ purple people and it sure is fine

But that’s not the reason that I came to land

I wanna get a job in a rock and roll band

Well bless my soul, rock and roll, flyin’ purple people eater

Pigeon-toed, undergrowed, flyin’ purple people eater

(We wear short shorts)

Flyin’ purple people eater

Sure looks strange to me

And then he swung from the tree and he lit on the ground

He started to rock, really rockin’ around

It was a crazy ditty with a swingin’ tune

Sing a boop boop aboopa lopa lum bam boom

Well bless my soul, rock and roll, flyin’ purple people eater

Pigeon-toed, undergrowed, flyin’ purple people eater

I like short shorts

Flyin’ little people eater

Sure looks strange to me (Purple People?)

And then he went on his way, and then what do ya know

I saw him last night on a TV show

He was blowing it out, a’really knockin’ em dead

Playin’ rock and roll music through the horn in his head

(clarinet solo)

Tequila

Now, what’s really funny, is before I wrote this post I googled to get the lyrics, and there is actually a YouTube video of Sheb Wooley singing this in 1958!!!!  I didn’t actually know it was that old…and NO I was not alive then.  But you can click on that link to go see that for yourself. Ray Stevens also sang it later, and so did Judy Garland (never saw that one and kind of hard to picture.)

Now you can share my joy and sing this for the rest of the day!!!    :-)

From a War Zone to beauty…

We recently underwent a remodel at our house.  Eeek, you say?

Yeah, I say that too.  We do alot of that, and because my husband is a carpenter superstar…we do it ourselves.

We’ve done the bathroom, our bedroom, our daughter’s new bedroom after my son moved out, and last year…the kitchen and dining area.  That one was a major overhaul, because we gutted it, floors, walls, and ceiling.  A sixty year old house has “things”…

My 10 Guilty Pleasures…

We all have them.  Those things that suck us in, keep us from doing the productive things we are SUPPOSED to be doing, and sometimes literally pull-the-money-out-of-our-pocket…

So being a firm believer in both guilt and pleasure:-)   …I thought I’d pay homage to my top ten.  In no particular order.

1)  DVR.  Honestly, I don’t know how we managed before it.  We are a major TV family, and now, there’s this magic box that records all our favorite shows, and all I have to do is turn on the TV and there they all are…in a list…waiting for me.  Love!

2)  Twitter / Facebook.  I’m addicted.  I admit it.  Twitter, more than Facebook, because that’s where all my writer peeps are, but I’m a hopeless social media slave.  I visit…I chat…I promote…and I learn.  And Twitter can be your friend.  :-)   I met my agent there!

3)  Shopping for books.  Especially since I got my Nook, I shop like a crazy woman…it’s just so easy.  But I also adore browsing through a bookstore, touching the covers, smelling the paper and ink in the room.  All those stories….sigh…

4)  Shopping for decor.  Kirklands, Pier One, Crate and Barrel, Pottery Barn… They are all the Mother Ship to me.  I could get lost in any of them and completely lose track of time.  Love, love, love…

5)  Shopping online in general.  There’s something entirely too easy about scrolling on a screen and clicking to purchase and ship without ever leaving your chair.  Buy, buy, buy…

6)  Nachos.   Really? Do I need to elaborate?

7)  Ice cream.   I love ice cream.  My favorite is Pecan Pralines and Cream, and my favorite DQ blizzard right now is Turtle Pecan Cluster.  Life is always better with ice cream…

8)  Heavily buttered popcorn.  You know…I can be completely full and miserable, and popcorn cooking is one of those things that can still make you drool, regardless.

9)  Lying in a hammock, next to a shady lake on a beautiful day, with said book I previously shopped for.

10)  Somebody playing with my hair.  That might be a girl thing, but I’ve loved it since I was a child.  My mom used to do it, and there are times I’d pay my husband to do it.  LOL.  Luckily I don’t have to.  My daughter has it just as bad.  I’m tempted to charge her.  :-)

So tell me yours!

Adding to your To-Read pile…

Yesterday I threw a question out to the webby world, asking for book recommendations.  The best stories that people had read recently, that they would recommend to others.  And since we all have nothing to read right now…  (cough cough…)  Yeah, I know.  My Nook, alone has 20-something new books in it, waiting for me.  But you never know where that next gem will come from, so here you go.

There is quite the mix here, which is how it should be…we all come from different places and love different types of stories.

THE BOOK THIEF by Markus Zusak (teen historical fiction)

THE SOLDIER’S WIFE by Margaret Leroy (historical fiction)

NUM8ERS by Rachel Ward (young adult) (my daughter personally has read this one twice)

BEFORE I GO TO SLEEP by S.J. Watson (literary thriller)

THE PROPOSAL by Mary Balogh (regency romance)

The Burgundy Club series by Miranda Neville (regency romance listed below…)

THE AMOROUS EDUCATION OF CELIA SEATON

CONFESSIONS OF AN ARRANGED MARRIAGE

THE DANGEROUS VISCOUNT

THE WILD MARQUIS

THE PEACH KEEPER by Sarah Addison Allen (women’s fiction)

TEN BEACH ROAD by Wendy Wax (women’s fiction)

HER SISTER’S SHADOW by Katherine Britton (women’s fiction)  (I have personally read this one and it’s wonderful)

Two nonfiction books hit the list as well…

UNBROKEN by Laura Hillenbrand (WWII History)

THE FOUR AGREEMENTS by Don Miguel Ruiz (Spiritual Self Help)

So there you go!!  Enjoy!!  And feel free to add yours in the comments!!

Friday Linky Love…Brenda Novak’s Diabetes Online Auction

This week’s Friday link up is for a great cause.  Yes, it also highlights my giveaway, but all proceeds for these donations go to the fight against Diabetes.  I’m talking about an author who goes above and beyond every year to help find a cure.  This is the Brenda Novak For The Cure of Diabetes Online Auction.

It runs each year for the month of May… and May 31 is coming up next week, so go check it out.  There are SO many things to look at.  She’s a bestselling author, so yes, a large category is authors giving away books, but there is also jewelry, crafts, novelty items, people giving away services… it’s huge.  And worth your time for a very worthy cause.

Go see!  And bid on something wonderful!!  :-)

A trip that changed you…

I’m not a big traveler.  I mean, I’d like to be, I’d like to be toodling around in a giant Winnebago or flying off to exotic locales like ones I read about.  But my very blue collar world doesn’t include scenarios like that.  I’ve only really been on a few big trips in my life.

A big vacation when I was in the fourth grade brought me to the Grand Canyon and all up the West Coast.  I’ve been scuba diving in Grand Cayman and Cozumel and Honduras.  I’ve been to London.  I’ve been skiing in Taos, NM.  All of those things were in my twenties.  And I went to Vegas for my honeymoon.  That about sums up my travelling portfolio.

But one trip that wasn’t a vacation, stands out in my head as life altering…   Click Here to go read the story…
