Take Chances - School Violence Aftermath

http://bookgoodies.com/a/B00FIOX1MW
Welcome to today's Tuesday Blog. Take Chances is my book of this week. My motivations behind this book are as powerful as the story it tells. I am a parent of children ranging in age from their forties to eighteen. One of my biggest fears was that one of them might experience this nightmare. Luckily, they didn't but they can't help but be affected by the shootings they've seen on the news or heard about from various sources. For so long I would ask myself how does one cope with this situation? What happens afterward? How does a person move forward after such terror? The normal aftereffects of such a situation have been examined until most of us can repeat them in our sleep. The flashbacks, bad dreams, invasive thoughts, numbing emotions, feelings of guilt, worry, and depression are normal. Then I ask myself is there another way to deal with these feelings than the accepted norm? What else can a person do to overcome the memories of a few seconds of absolute terror?Julie Bond is a teen who grew up with a nomadic life in Europe. Her parents were in the military. This gave her a set of survival instincts far above the normal student in a rural high school in the United States. She was used to dealing with leaving close friends behind. She didn't like this, but it was expected with the jobs her parents had. Julie had even experienced school violence in kindergarten, something she never talked about until just before what would become another day of terror in her life.In the aftermath, she had no time to go through the normal emotions associated with a school shooting. Yes, she felt anger and a bit of depression, but she was also tugged into fighting back for another survivor who faced charges for something he didn't do. Her remaining friends and she had to step into fighting back mode. They were handed the opportunity to make a difference.Instead of thinking about what happened, her focus turned to the future. In this future, she discovered she didn't have to take the path she had designed for herself. She and those who walked away from the violence grabbed onto new and different experiences, ones that would give them a chance to heal while also discovering new vistas. What Julie discovers about herself, about her friends, is what makes Take Chances a novel teens will connect with and enjoy.

Excerpt: Achtung! The German word for attention echoes through my head as I sit in the last French class I'll ever take. In an instant, the comforting cream-colored walls of Landry High School vanish. I'm crouched under a table with tears streaming down my face. Three men and two women point huge, black automatic weapons at my classmates. Blurb: Julie Bond grew up in Europe as a military brat. She found her very first permanent home in Landry, GA as a teen going into high school. Almost four years later, she's having pre-graduation jitters and flashing back to an incident of school violence she experienced in Europe. She attempts to convince herself that it can never happen again, but continually finds herself flashing back to that day no matter how hard she tries. The people around her present any number of problems for Julie, and she's hard put to keep from drowning under all the issues. Then Michael--a cool guy she's had a crush on for the last three years—returns from traveling the US as a photographer, and Julie now has one more thing to distract her as she prepares to leave high school. One thing she firmly believes in: no one will ever invade her classroom with violence again.Once again, the impossible happens. Once again, she's in a classroom with a madman holding a gun. Once again, she must survive.

Where U @ - The Consequences of Texting and Driving
Welcome to the Tuesday blog for my Book of The Week! We're featuring Where U @ this week, a book about texting and driving.

The message to avoid texting while driving has been out for many years, but it seems there are more and more accidents attributed to this recently.
Gwent Police in the U.K. decided to let the world see a demonstration of what can happen when someone texts and drives.Gwent PSA on texting and driving
This video exploded into existence in 2009, but it's message is just as important now, five years later. Texting, even for just a second, can and does have tragic results. In Where U @, Trea loves the music of Shy-Anne Horvorka. This song becomes what Trea leans on after a texting and driving accident. Too Young, Too Late - Shy-Anne Hovorka100,000 accidents every year are the result of texting and driving. This documentary has people from both sides of these accidents talking about the impact this act has on their lives. From One Second to the NextFrom one second to the next, your life can change because of a text. The images in these videos aren't nice. They aren't meant to be. They're meant to prove that texting and driving doesn't work.Where U @? Driving? Don't look. Don't text and drive.

The text is from my guy, Dave Woods. It's a code, a way for him to help me feel better about everything. Mostly, it's his way of showing me that he cares.

Fin depends on her companions to keep her safe…and out of chains. As one of the Amari, the only race that can harness magic, she longs for a normal life. One where she didn’t have to constantly look over her shoulder, and she could fall in love.
Alaric fell hard for Fin from the moment he laid his eyes on her three years ago. He swore an oath to keep her safe, even if it meant his life. But he knew that any relationship he could hope to have with her would be on her terms.
When a king offers them the chance at a normal life, Fin’s cautious. And rightly so, as there are others who think she’s the one to lead the Amari from a life of slavery.

Book of the Week: The Wrong One - Missing Persons
The Wrong One is about a child kidnapped by people known to her family, but not welcome in their home. Every day, children vanish for so many reasons. Some are taken by predators, others by non-custodial parents, even more leave of their own accord for reasons only they understand.

As I searched for ideas about this blog, I settled on the idea of spotlighting children missing for years. Some will be endangered runaways, others just vanished and no other information is known. A few are the victims of a non-custodial parent's determination to have that child.
Information here comes from the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children. In all instances, not much else can be discovered about these children. Some are adults now. All of them have family wondering where they are, when they'll come home.
Yasmine Acree – Last seen at her home on January 15, 2008 in Chicago Illinois. Her family still waits for her return.

Maria Adame-Lucas – Last seen May 17, 2008 in St. Paul, Minnesota. Considered an endangered runaway. Maria Adame-Lucas

Amanda Adlai – Last seen in West Bloomfield, Michigan on December 26, 2008. Believed to be with non-custodial father. May have traveled to Russia. Amanda Adlai

There you have it. This is all the information for children missing for between six and eight years. That's all the police know. Yet, these children have to be somewhere, with someone. Share these links. Intensify the search for these children, bring them home.

One by one, the residents of Landry, Georgia gave up on finding Lyssa Winders alive. It had, after all, been fourteen years since she vanished. The men who invaded her home left behind the bodies of those she loved with all her heart. Only one person never gave up and still searches for Lyssa. Kyle Tinker battles his own demons from that night, when he hid like a coward instead of running for help. Their eighteenth birthday looms on the horizon, and Kyle is determined to bring Lyssa home.
Excerpt: Four-year-old Lyssa Winders landed with a thump on her living room floor. Her bottom hurt from the hard wood, and her head ached from all the yelling and shouting she'd been hearing. Nothing made sense. She just wanted this to stop. Her parents, Auntie Keisha, Nana Brandy, and Grandpa Monty kneeled in front of her. They had their hands on the back of their heads, and they looked very scared."Gonna talk now, Jack?" the stinky man asked. He had carried her out of the safety of her bedroom and dumped her on the floor. "Or do I hurt your kid?"Stinky jerked Lyssa to her feet. She couldn't run. He held her tight in front of his nasty smelling body."She's just a baby," Daddy said. "Don't hurt Lyssa. Let her go. She won't tell anyone anything." He stared at her with scared eyes. "Right, baby? You won't say anything." She nodded, and her daddy faced Stinky. "See, she agreed. Just let her go.""Nope." A man near her laughed. She turned her head and saw her puppy. Rags crept out from behind the sofa. His tail stood straight in the air, and he made growly noises in his throat. Lyssa swallowed hard. Rags couldn't come any closer. Stinky had a gun. He had a horribly tight grip on her shoulder.

Review: Forget Me Not by Stacey Nash

Review:
Anamae longs for her missing mom. She hangs on to slippery memories with a forget me not necklace and discovers a brooch that matches the pendant. Together, these pieces of jewelry drag her into a fight to overcome The Collective.
Stacey Nash has brought us an excellent tale of loss and searching for the truth. The mystery surrounding Jax adds to the suspense as a group of teens ignore the orders of the adults with them and go after a group bent on world domination. While the middle sagged a bit, Nash whipped everything into shape and left open an ending that has a mild promise of a sequel. This book is an interesting tale with paranormal elements. I recommend Forget Me Not for young adult readers.
Note: I received a free copy of this book from the author in exchange for an honest review. All opinions are 100% my own.

Evil Eyes Release Week - The Friend of a Child!

Your home is the safest place you know. Right? Not always. Sometimes, those we trust most bring in our worst nightmare.

The Friend of a Child: His hands caress her shoulders. She tenses. He murmurs in her ear to relax. She can't. This is so wrong."I'm really nineteen," he whispers. "My sister is a huge liar."Her instincts scream at her to run, but he's behind her, blocking her from escape. If only's race through her mind.If only she'd talked to her husband about her feelings. If only she'd asked her son to take his creepy friend and leave. If only she wasn't so nice. If only she could learn to tell her adult children they had to give her some notice before showing up.If only's wouldn't help her now. Nothing would. The safety and sanctity of her home had been invaded. She wasn't safe. The boy behind her, and he was boy no matter his protestations that he was of the age of legal consent, wouldn't leave her alone. The constant touches, the whispers of illicit adventures that turned her stomach. How could she get away from him. She was at her desk, trying to work. He had her blocked from escape.Thoughts of calling the police to get this freak out of her home flitted through her mind – briefly. She immediately dismissed them. She was fifty, he was seventeen…or nineteen, she wasn't sure. All she knew was how it would look – a mother of eight, grandmother to a beautiful bevy of babies, and this boy would ruin everything. She could feel the evil rolling off him. Hear his murmur of "I'll be back." Watched him stroll back to where her oldest son and his latest conquest (the evil boy's sister) hung out in the living room watching profanity littered shows with her eleven-year-old. She couldn't go out there and take away the remote, shut off the television, assert her parenting roll. There was only one thing to do now.The creepy kid who thought he could control her had left her with an escape route. And she used it. Dashed down the stairs, found her husband on his computer. Explained the problem. The look in the eyes of the man she loved told her everything. He walked up the stairs before her. Looked at the evil child, told him to pack his things. Glanced at his oldest son, said it was time to leave. Four hours after the terror walked out of her home, she discovered it wasn't over. One of those three had stolen her license plate. How to explain this to the police?

Evil Eyes Release Week - Recognizing a Stalker!

Is there a guy interested in you? Are you giving him one signal and he's interpreting that to mean something else all together? Does this guy ignore your firm "no" or see through your excuses about being busy? Not to throw you into a panic, but these are some of the first signs of a stalker.

http://bookgoodies.com/a/B00J1QC3V8
Goodreads
What other signs are there? - Expressions of helplessness. The "I can't live without one night with you" or "I just don't understand why you won't go out with me." or even "Can you please help me figure out how to cook crème brule?"- Over-interpreting what you say or do. Tucking your hair behind your ear elicits whispers of "sexy" where no one else can hear. Walking past him in the grocery store or parking lot sends a silent signal that you're interested. A "no" means "later." - Socially isolated. He never seems to have a life. He's always around. She can't wait to see you in the morning, afternoon, evening. Her calendar is always open.- Overly-dependent on you only. No one else can change her flat tire. She uses your shoulder to cry on when anything goes wrong. He never has a date for an "important family event." Only you can fix his printer jams.- A history of violence or relationship abuse. Her former boyfriend "dissed" her and she had to key his new car. His last girlfriend liked to use him as a "punching bag" so he had to retaliate, and the "bitch" cried domestic violence. He has to attend anger management classes because "she" lied to the cops.- Alcohol or drug abuse. He always closes the local hangout. She needs pain killers for an injury from years ago. He is the life of the party, until he stumbles outside so drunk he can't see the door. She is always nodding off, always popping a pill for one reason or another.- Actual or threatened suicide attempts are especially dangerous for YOU (he has nothing left to lose). He can't take our rejection any longer (holds an object over his heart). She can't live without out (panicked phone call threatening to end it all). There are more signs. More warnings of danger, and ways to avoid them, at this website: http://www.crime-safety-security.com/Stalker-Warning-Signs.htmlWhat about the mysterious phone calls with no one on the other end? The heavy breathing or the "playful" tap certain numbers with a message only he or she understands? Do you have a person on your social media sites who is always popping up? Do they ask personal, inappropriate questions? Are they always there when you're online? Is this person wherever you go? Can't visit your favorite restaurant any longer because they have the best seat for watching you? You now shop across town for groceries to avoid her presence in the produce section? Are these signs of a stalker? This website has thoughts on that: http://www.bukisa.com/articles/271607_recognizing-a-potential-stalkerHaving a stalker isn't something you laugh off. There are resources to go to in order to stop the person. Evil Eyes Release Week - The Ex!

Ending a marriage is never a good thing. There are so many things to consider, but the most important is whether or not you will be better off apart. Sometimes, one spouse just doesn't want to give up and will go to any lengths to remain with you.

http://bookgoodies.com/a/B00J1QC3V8
Goodreads
The Ex: A marriage of constant put downs, the edge of physical violence, the sense I could never do anything right. I had a job, a good one. I was good at that job, earning praise and accolades, but at home, I was a loser, a person with no idea on how to clean a house, raise children, or prepare a simple meal – or so my former husband would have me think.I am a child born in the fifties, raised in the turbulent sixties, coming of age in the swinging seventies. During this time, women were becoming stronger in the workplace. The lines between traditional jobs blurred and broke down. One thing I heard constantly during this time is that a successful woman at work often endured abuse in the home, but I never thought it could happen to me.It did, but I escaped it. The divorce was difficult, often peppered with unwitnessed threats from my ex to take my kids and disappear. What mother would ever willingly let that happen?Once the divorce was finalized, I thought I was free of him. Free of his threats. Free of his intimidation. Free of being under his thumb.I was wrong. It started the first night of his mid-week visitation. He showed up late, to pick up the son we had together. The first I knew of him being there was his peering through my window, not to watch me. That wasn't the creepy part. He was looking over my home, checking out everything he could find in sight. At the same time, he kept hollering "Is anyone home?" as if he couldn't see me or the couple I lived with to make ends meet.I walked my son to the door, opened it, and commented that a normal person knocks on the door and waits for an answer. My ex's response was that he "had the right" to check out where his kid was stuck living. He pointed my son to his van then turned to me."I will take him away from you. My kid won't live in a commune."I shivered and backed into the house. My eyes followed the van as it backed out of our driveway, wondering if that was the last time I'd see my child. What fool of a judge would hand over mid-week visitation to a man who had shown in court he was determined to me look unstable, but had proven he was himself with his outbursts and inability to control himself? This was the beginning of a pattern of window observation, of late pickups, and even later drop offs. My daughter, not his but he wanted her as his, became nervous whenever he arrived to pick up my son. The window peeping turned into pounding on the door with loud demands of "Is anyone here?" It didn't matter how fast we answered, he was making the neighbors think we were avoiding him.I had a restraining order given by the court when he tried to bull his way into my home prior to the divorce, so I called the police. Not once, but many times. Every time one of those upholders of law and order responded, their surly response was they didn't get involved in divorce cases. I demanded reports, in case my child disappeared. No one but me had heard my ex's threat to do that, so I wanted reports of his stalking. The cops complied – reluctantly. The fear I lived with that he would show up one night while we were sleeping never abated. Nor did the fear I would lose my child and never see him again, until we moved to another state, far from my ex.Or so I thought. His parents lived in another state near where I settled. Within a week of my arrival at my new home, they were driving by, back and forth, taking pictures of my child playing outside with other children. The fear returned, more intense this time, as I remembered my ex telling me how he got his older kids from their "unfit" mother. Was I his next "unfit" mother? In the end, calls to my attorney weren't the answer. Telling the police in my new hometown didn't work, as he lived in another state. Enduring the constant phone calls about how I'd never see my son again if I didn't return to where my ex lived didn't do anything but bring more terror. I found relief in a way I never thought would work.He was constantly late or absent with his child support. I went to the state about that, demanding that he be forced to give me the money through his check. The state people put a garnishment on his wages and tax returns. The loss of income did what nothing else did. My ex decided harassing me, stalking me, would only keep his child from him. He stopped.I had a restraining order. It didn't work, because the police refused to get involved. I had to find a method of stopping my stalker without anyone else's help. To this day, thinking about all the things I had to endure still ties my stomach into knots. My only advice is to use any means possible to keep your stalker away from you.

Evil Eyes Release Week - Restraining Orders!

My only experience with a restraining order for an individual who was stalking me was poor. The police didn't want to get involved, claiming it wasn't serious enough to warrant even speaking to the individual concerned about violating the court order. There was an almost apathetic response when I demanded a report be made, and the individual be brought in front of a judge to answer as to why they couldn't obey the demand that they abide by my privacy.

Do I believe a restraining order will help in a stalker situation today? Unfortunately no, I don't. I don't think the police ever take these things seriously, until the situation explodes into a situation where people are injured, forced to leave the place they call home, or worse. There are mixed messages when it comes to a restraining order to keep your stalker away from you. Do restraining orders work?A few say yes. They're the lucky ones. Most say no.
Here are a few examples:- Restraining orders are rarely effective due to the fact that the American Justice System does not take them seriously. http://www.relating360.com/index.php/how-to-stop-a-stalker-4-33970/- Stalker gets restraining order against celebrity to "Stop Stalking Me!" http://www.tmz.com/2013/11/05/baywatch-star-alexandra-paul-restraining-order-stalker-gym-pool/- "Get a restraining order." And prove every aspect of the case on your own. Does this really work? Most people who have been stalked say no, if they're around to say no. http://voices.yahoo.com/how-prove-stalking-case-court-law-7294636.html- How to get rid of a stalker? This site - http://www.examiner.com/article/relationships-101-how-do-you-get-rid-of-a-stalker- offers good advice, but does it really work? Most people who have gotten a restraining order might argue.
How do restraining orders fail? There are stalking laws in every state now, yet stalkers constantly ignore this "piece of paper." They continue to harass their victim, for whatever reason they've contrived. Far too many women now believe that this "piece of paper" is nothing more than something to plaster to their wall, as proof they have a reason to protect themselves. There are other ways to protect yourself from a stalker. Self defense classes are a good beginning. Carrying mace and being willing to use it is another way to protect yourself. Any kind of weapon will work to be honest. The best protection, however, is being aware of where you are and who is around you every minute is the only thing that you can rely on.Call the cops whenever you see your stalker close. Get the restraining order, but be prepared for the worst outcome. Only you can ensure your stalker doesn't win this war of wills.
