Ode to the Overworked Editor

They labor night and day…
CMOS is their best friend…
Manuscripts are their field of play…
Red and blue dances throughout carefully crafted words…
Editor, oh editor, a thankless task have ye…
You do your best…
Explain the rules…
Only to have heated discussions erupt…
Once again, the editor resumes their lonely job…
Oft working through the night…
Their only goal is to…
Make your book a best seller…
Editor, oh editor, a thankless task have ye…
You do your best…
Explain the rules…
Only to have heated discussions erupt…
Finally, the job is done…
The author accepts what must be done…
Our lonely editor returns the completed job…
Sighs loudly and begins yet another…
Editor, oh, editor, a thankless task have ye…
You do your best…
Explain the rules…
And hope this new author isn’t as hard to work with.

Let's Have Fun Vol. 1

Welcome to Tuesday Blog Share. Today, we’re concentrating on books related to the summer!
The summer season is upon us. It will arrive near the end of the month along with all the fun activities that go along with a season of heat and being outdoors. With this excitement is the longest day of the year. Of course, this day is still twenty-four hours long, but it seems much longer because the sun is out for a greater period of time. The Summer Solstice is a day for sun worshipers, for families to plan outdoors activities and barbecues, and for friends to gather for excitement at the beach or in the mountains.

A chance to be young again… proposal plans gone awry… Surfing… beaches… a horror soaked night… and many more stories to celebrate a Summer Solstice of fun and adventure.
A.J. Kohler, April Erwin, S@yr, Cynthia Ley, Josie Montano, K.C. Sprayberry, Kristal McKerrington, M.A. Cortez, M.H. Newhouse, and W.H. Matlack present to you, our readers, stories to brighten up your Summer Solstice, the longest day of the year.
Get Starlight's Curse on Amazon!
With more than a little trepidation (trepidation, hell! Downright nervousness!), George pulled his SUV to the curb at the airport. It wasn’t enough of an airport to have separate arrival and departure levels; it was a tiny place, and all they got was two puddle-jumper flights in and out each day. It was just a lot easier to fly in, even with the small planes and the horrid flight schedule, than coming into a larger airport and driving. The closest major airport was at least an hour and a half drive, probably two, even without any traffic issues. He’d seen the plane arrive, and getting luggage didn’t take long here. She should be outside by now. If not, well, he’d just go around again. For the fourth time. It wasn’t much of a trip. He was nervous as all hell.
Oh, God, there she was! Their eyes met, and even this far away, he knew her and she knew him. They almost seemed to link in some sort of mystic connection, right there, out in the street.

Spice Up Your Book

We labor hard on our books, going the extra mile to make them intriguing to new readers. As authors, we develop a plot, sprinkle in intrigue, drop in a pinch of spice, stir into the action, and deliver a finely baked product to the market that should have people slathering to grab it and enjoy themselves.
Sounds like a recipe for success. Doesn’t it?
Yet, once your book has entered the realm of being noticed among the thousands of other books of similar genres, your sales are non-existent or poor. It’s not your promoting, since you’ve been talking up this particular novel since you finished the first draft and have had excellent reactions from potential readers. You even contacted a few and offered them an ARC to review. Those reviews reflect what you’ve known all along. This novel is a winner, yet it’s not doing well at all.
Are you ready to throw up your hands and quit?
Hang on there for a moment. There’s something you may not have considered in promoting your book and it might be right there in the novel.
Many of us have a character or two cook in a book. Even books for teens have the main characters showing off their skills to help their family or impress someone. Your fans might see that mention and wonder just how to make the dish. Even something as simple as tacos or as complicated as putting on a whole family get together holiday meal can have different versions of the same dishes.
How can you use what these characters are doing to attract more attention to your book.
Try including a recipe or two at the end of the book. Make sure you mention this in your blurb and promotion. In Starlight’s Curse, Brad makes a yummy enchilada dish. That’s included at the back of the book. Several people have mentioned they made this dish and their families fell in love with it. The same thing goes with Pony Dreams. Abby and her mom make a upside down cake using dried peaches. I included a modern version of that cake at the end of the book. A close friend said she and her daughter repeated that scene and had a very fun time.
Book promotion in the twenty-first century requires a lot of different tricks to make your book stand out against the competition. This is but one way to make that happen. One thing to remember when including recipes; keep them easy and fun.

Summer Breeze

Welcome to Sunday Blog Share! Today, we’re talking about summer stories, giving our characters fun in the sun with their favorite activities!

Get Summer Breeze on Amazon!
Heading on back to the early seventies, to the beach experience. For many people, the first beaches that come to mind are those in California. Who doesn’t remember the Beach Boys and their iconic music? Of course, there were other groups, particularly Seals & Croft with Summer Breeze in 1972.
Beth and Trane are like another teen in that hot, romantic summer when the world was changing so fast. They have their dreams. He’s yearning to surf in Hawai’i and she has her vision set on a non-traditional job for women. Their post high school plans take a back seat on the Summer Solstice though, when the magic of the day begins a relationship that stands the test of time.

A special bikini puts courage into Beth to approach the guy of her dreams. Trane looks forward to the waves and talking to a girl who has caught his eye. The Summer of ’72 on the longest day of the year, two teens discover love on the beach, amid adventure and fun.

“Oh, that is so gorgeous!”
Beth Ramsey ignored the tiny, square bedroom lost in the sixties to admire her slim figure in a mirror hanging on her door. The orange bikini she now wore offset her dark tan so well. The tiny gold clasp holding the top on tight might cause problems later, if she didn’t lather up that area with a lot of Swedish Tanning Secret. But she was prepared with not one but three tubes of the lotion that had helped her achieve the healthy glow on her skin.
“I can’t wait until Trane sees me.” She blew a kiss at her reflection and yanked on a pair of short shorts that were nothing more than a pair of her old jeans she’d cut off. A flimsy, see through, white blouse would provide some protection against the wind later, when she returned home from what she planned to be a celebration of the summer solstice on Malibu beach tonight.
Only one thing could mar her happiness, and she planned to avoid that situation at all costs.
“Mom and Dad won’t give me any of that ‘you’re so establishment’ stuff today.”

The Special, The Mean, The Rotten

Let’s face it. The internet isn’t a friendly place. Yes, you can find groups where you are comfortable and most people act with a sense of decency, but once you’re out in that big, bad electronic universe, all bets are off. As authors, we are particularly vulnerable to attack from trolls who haven’t achieved success in their lives and are looking for someone to demean.
Let’s look at some of the personalities you’ll run into during your daily forays into social media. Bear in mind, if you think I’ve pointed you out personally, please check the mirror before leveling an accusation. The personalities I’ll be discussing are nothing more than a mix of those I’ve had the less than enthusiastic opportunity to run into during my time on social media…
The Special

This individual believes their wants and desires eclipse everyone else’s. They’ll offer unwarranted and often wrong advice, say your grammar is wrong when it’s not, and generally stick around until you respond to them. Here’s the clue about dealing with a special person—ignore them completely. Don’t fall for any of their postings, no matter how nice they are or how many times they apologize. It’s a trap meant to pull you into an online argument you have no chance of winning. All that will happen is that Mr. or Ms. Special will eventually vanish from your life, filled with joy that they accomplished their mission of making the author look like a fool. They’ll gloat and tag you for months and months on end, testing your ability to ignore their “specialness.” If you respond, they will never give up making your life miserable.
The Mean

The mean individual has a hateful attitude. They hate success. They hate the world. They especially hate anyone who is happy. A hateful troll will search for people they can attack at will. They will drop one or two word comments, meant to elicit a response along of the lines of “What do you mean?” Then they will drop a diatribe on you and continue to do so without a response, so their words are out there for the world to see at your expense. How does one get rid of the mean troll? You have to wait out the individual. Oh, you can report their meanness and block them from your page, but they’ll return under another name and continue their attacks. They have a victim now and won’t give up until you cry enough and vanish. Since, as authors, we can’t afford to do that, we must avoid any encounters with the mean troll.
The Rotten

The rotten individual thinks everyone is out to get them. They’ll whine and cry to their friends that this person or that, usually someone with a strong social media presence, has insulted them for whatever reason. Their only reason for posting is to get sympathy and they’ll do that with whatever means they have at hand. A rotten troll has been known to discover information about their victim, to create havoc in their lives along the lines of “I know where you live” or “You’ll get yours someday.” Ignore those threats. They’re meant to entice you into buying into their attitude and attempting to placate them. This will only bring a new round of rottenness into your life and you’ll come off looking bad.
Internet trolls are a fact of life. There is nothing we can do to stop them, no matter how much we try. If they’re shut down by complaints, they come back under another identity and with a vengeance to take on the person who had the audacity to see them for who they are. Your best bet in all cases is to ignore their initial posting and go on about your business. Once they see they don’t have a willing victim, they will move on to someone else.

Non-Custodial Parental Abduction
Perhaps the biggest fear families torn apart by divorce is the non-custodial parent taking the kids and vanishing. This particular crime isn’t written about much by journalists. Most people believe it’s a family problem and should stay that way.

Lost & Scared
Nothing could be further from the truth. Non-custodial parental kidnapping uproots a child as badly as a stranger kidnapping. It’s even worse in some ways, because the child is assaulted with mostly untrue statements about the parent left behind. They’re confused and scared, wanting to go back to their normal life but also fearing “what if Mom/Dad says is the truth.”
Courts in some areas have so loathe to intervene in what they consider a “family affair” that they refuse to acknowledge that a non-custodial parental kidnapping has occurred until it is far too late to make an effective search for the missing child or issue an Amber Alert. Perhaps recognition that sometimes, the non-custodial parent needs more than a slap on the wrist when there are indicators they will run with a child is the answer.
Blurb
When their younger twin siblings were murdered by their cold-blooded father, Shane and Keri’s own twin connection deepened. Their father shamed Shane and Keri into silence, and then went on to bring four more children into a house shuddering under the weight of his unpredictable temper.
Ten years later, what should have been a regular visitation turns into a horrific nightmare. Trapped in the Superstition Mountains with an addicted and dangerous father, Keri’s faith and determination wavers, but she knows she must save her brothers and sisters and return all of them to the home they love.
She now faces one insurmountable obstacle. He can’t afford to let her go.
Excerpt
The window in my bedroom that I share with my two younger brothers overlooks Main Street. I angle my head, so I can attempt to see where my twin is.
“See Keri?” Axe, my best bud, asks.
“Nope. But I do see a bunch of cars leaving.” I face him and grin. “That means she’s on her way back.”
“Great. We can leave now.”
“Looks that way.”
He and I race down the stairs. The normal noise of a large family during winter holiday break greets me, along with what can only be described as evil snickering. We come around the corner, shoving and pushing to see which one of us gets to the bottom first, with me gaining an inch on my bud.
“Yes!” I pump a fist and hop down the last three steps, the satisfaction of proving once and for all that I’m the best pass receiver on our team.
“I am so going to beat you one of these days,” he says.
We knuckle bump and clown around.
“Ready when you are, honey,” a strange female voice says.

Jealousy – Ignore the Bite

It’s so easy to be jealous of an indie author who is selling large quantities of their books on a daily basis. Most of us have to struggle to get a single sale in a month and yearn for the day when our name will be recognized by readers worldwide. Lately, there has been a trend to put down those successful authors, to claim they have sold out because they no longer have to struggle.
Stop falling for that immediately.
In order for an author to be successful in the twenty-first century world, we must work twenty-four hours a day, seven days a week in order to make our books known to potential readers. We have to be coming up with new promotional tools constantly. Authors need to be prepared to have their books reviewed poorly, and we have to do all of this with a smile on our face and a willingness to accept failure. Like any business, we have to realize there are times when we’ll have fabulous months were we sell many books, and poor to non-existent sales in other months. The latter will often happen more than the former.
We are all humans and therefore victims of that niggling feeling that we should be doing better than we are. We stare at authors proudly proclaiming they’ve sold more books, gotten more reviews, and are gushing about appearance offers arriving through their email. Many of us think, if only that was me.
Well, it can be you. What you, the author, have to realize is that other author selling their books so much has discovered what works for their fans. They aren’t stagnating in their promotion but rather updating it, creating new and more attractive images to attract attention, and getting out daily with upbeat postings about their books.
Take a lesson from these individuals. Don’t grumble and grouse about what you don’t have. Put on a happy face, take to social media, and talk about your books. But don’t talk about them exclusively. Get interested in what others are passionate about. Commiserate with those who have experienced failure and cheer with those who’ve had success. Be the author willing to do blog posts for your friends’ new releases. Become the author leading the pack by trying methods everyone else is afraid to attempt.
Remember one thing while you’re doing this. Pea-green jealously won’t sell your books. A happy, smiling face and positive attitude will do that.

Reuniting Beloved Characters

Welcome to Sunday Blog Share. Today, we’re going to be talking about the reunion of a group of beloved ghost hunters who got in a little too much trouble in their first adventure.

Get The Ghost Catcher on Amazon
The Ghosties came to mind when someone mentioned to me that there were a lot of hauntings where I live. Not that I needed that reminder, what with the mysterious shadow that dashed past my living room window once a year, around the time of the Battle of Chickamauga. Of course, the fact that we lived a mere twenty miles from the location of that infamous Civil War Monument might have had a lot to do with the paranormal activity hereabouts.
While we’ve never solved the mystery of what ghost haunted the exterior of our home once a year, the Ghosties have had much better luck in tackling the supernatural around this same area. However, after their fiasco following the defeat of the fire demons in Ghosties Trouble To The Max, this intrepid crew of ghost hunters has a reputation to retrieve and there isn’t much time to do it.

A gift to know when people are in trouble of the ghostly type puts Hailey Hatmaker in the middle of a major problem—one that winds up getting her into more hot water than she can handle. In true Hailey Hatmaker fashion, she dives into what turns out to be a battle with Limbo, her number one nemesis.
Can Hailey rescue two friends before it's too late? Or is she forever condemned to losing to Limbo?

No adult in Landry, Georgia would ever admit a teen can do something right. Not a one, for then they would have to 'fess up to the teens being able to make their own decisions. The people in charge just plain ignored any good thing teens did.
Then I saw a problem, one I couldn't say a word about. All I could do is stand to one side and watch as disaster loomed.
I was the last person with Maren Dougless and Zac Morton Friday afternoon at the high school. What I saw of their auras – green with a black outer edge – scared me right down to my toes. As if that wasn't bad enough, since black represented death, and green meant vibrant life, in addition the center of those auras each had a reddish eye in the center with sickly yellow streaks arcing throughout it.

A smile was on his face. Despite the fact that he was supposed to connect with the egg donor of this lovely child, he had no thoughts of doing that or returning the kid at the appointed time. His timing was perfect. The child—Lanie is such an idiotic name; I’ll have to come up with another one—would be five in a few days. In time, she would forget there had been his loser ex in her life. She—Sheila will regret divorcing me—had battered through his training, all he’d gone through to make her a compliant and complacent wife. She’d run away after he ordered her to get an abortion. Good thing the bitch ignored me. I wouldn’t have this gorgeous child to raise to be like me.Granted the child was weak now, but he would fix that, as soon as he made sure they vanished forever. No one would stop him from raising his daughter as he saw fit, and that meant keeping her away from her weakling of a mother.Quietly, Mark Jannson, scion of the globally famous Jannson family, whose assets numbered in the billions, removed anything he considered important from his lavishly furnished thirty room mansion located in the mountains above Denver. His mother’s jewels were carefully packed into a leather satchel, to be given to his daughter, if she remained true to the Jannson name. The woman who called herself his mother had been consigned to a hovel in the southeast somewhere, once she showed her true colors by attempting to take him from his father.“Let the bitch live in poverty the rest of her life,” he whispered.

Character Growth in a Series

We all work to develop our characters, to help them grow throughout a novel. When it comes to a series, that growth must be done over a longer period of time, in order for the reader to see maturity developing and the character taking on greater challenges.
How does one grow a character?
There are the usual methods, of the individual going through tests or challenges and learning from them. This usually satisfies the reader. However, if you have a character who is proud of certain characteristics and refuses to give them, even though everyone around him/her feels they’re juvenile, you are faced with a greater challenge.
In the Canoples Investigations series, my characters grow somewhat from book to book, but the guys have trouble maintaining that growth. They’re teens, seventeen and soon to be eighteen, so they’ll have moments of reversion. It’s part of who they are; teens who dive into trouble without thinking out the consequences. Yet, now that they’re going into their fifth novel, BD, Carl, Cassie, and Terry have to become more responsible. They’re taking on a sacred duty—showing three other younger teens how to be investigators. With the addition of Corina, LaTisha, and Kathe from the Secret Society adventure, the original members of Canoples Investigations must show these girls how to do the job right. That’s not to say BD will fully settle down. He’s the guy women admire for his tenacity and dedication to getting the job done, but also wonder if he’ll ever grow up.
The question of how to make BD grow up will come later in the series, when he’s forced into a position where he has to make nice with politicians and do things he loathes. Yet, he’ll still somehow maintain some of his irritating yet endearing qualities.
Remember, no one wants to see a character that stagnates in growth in a series. They need to grow and mature, be able to handle situations in a more mature manner as the series progresses.
