Dreams

Welcome to Tuesday Blog Share. Today we’re focusing on dreams. We all have them: to be a success, to be accepted, to stand out among our peers. Teens especially have dreams. Ridicule can often drive a teen inward, where they accept they’re not good enough to fulfill those dreams. They’re left with the feeling they’ll never succeed at anything.
Meet Brian Lachlan. He’s a teen seeking acceptance and attempting to overcome the feelings of failure haunting him. Yet, no matter what he does, he fails.

Brian Lachlan, at thirteen, knows what his future will be. He will be a ship commander, like the skipper of Lucretia’s Dream. On the day when he must prove his skills, in order to be placed in the right training program, he uses the Eight Simple Rules one must know for such a position to compare to his progress.
Will Brian reach his goal?

Excerpt
There are all kinds of rules if you’re going to be the commander of a space liner, exploring the galaxy. Not many of the men and women on Lucretia’s Dreambelieved in this theory, but they weren’t determined to become the youngest starship commander in history.
According to galactic records, the person currently holding the record was an ancient forty-five when he was awarded command of a garbage scow. But it wasn’t a floating trashcan that interested Brian Lachlan. Oh, no, his master scheme was to take control of the very ship upon which he had been born and raised—Lucretia’s Dream.
I will get the grand prize in this contest. I just have to. That’s the first step to reaching my goal.

The Price of Book Pirates

Serious subject most authors won’t approach. Book Pirates are a real thing. They steal books and offer them to readers for free. That’s right, unless you received a free copy of a book from the author or from an approved giveaway, it’s been stolen. Even worse, you may be paying a price you never expected. These book pirates don’t just steal books, they also go after your information such as your credit or debit card.                                Like most thieves, these pirates don’t care what you lose. They laugh when confronted by authors and publishers seeking to stop them. Their only interest is in getting what they can from a gullible public who believes the author has provided the book for their website to give to you for nothing.
Before you object strenuously, ask yourself a few questions.
Why would an author give away a book they’re working hard to promote on an authorized sales such as Amazon daily?
Why would an author make spiteful comments about websites that claim they have permission to give away this book?
Why are authors being so angry about book pirates, who seem to be giving away thousands of their books daily?
Let’s address these questions by asking another one…
Do you consider yourself a thief?
I heard that. Many people are screaming that of course they’re not a thief. Yet, if pressed, more than a few will admit to getting a book from a website the author gave to said site.
Backing up again. No, I didn’t give that website a book to giveaway. Nor did any of the hundreds of other authors I know do this. We’re all together in our plan to take these sites down, but as soon as one comes down, another ten are up in moments, with our books offered for free. It’s a losing battle, but one I’m not backing away from because they have my hard work and are giving it away, thereby depriving me of hard earned money.
I use only authorized sales venues, actually my publisher does this. Self-published authors without the protection of a publisher must do this on their own. We spend many days, weeks, and months writing our books, going through and editing, hiring someone to edit (or in the case of a publisher, being assigned an editor), proofreading, and publishing. All in all, it takes us a long time for our books to be considered a success financially. We do not and will not willingly give our books to one of these sites.
The bottom line of why we object to these pirates? It all comes down to earning a living. One of these sites posted numbers of downloads of my books. It was actually quite amazing to see a number like that, not that I truly believe it. After all, if they’re lying about permission to have my book, lying about not using your credit/debit card for nefarious means, why shouldn’t they be lying about download numbers. But without any factual information, I used that number to figure out exactly how much these pirates have taken from me in a year.
Now, the number they had posted bold as brass on their website was 1948 downloads a month. Sweet! Any author wants to see that kind of number—from an authorized sales venue. My ebooks never cost more than $6.00, so the individual thefts don’t seem like much, unless you calculate those losses in terms of overall books. I have 74 currently available. And then use that same information, minus what the sales venue takes as their fee and my publisher receives. Many people are now thinking that I can’t make very much even calculating in what book pirates claim they’ve given to readers.
You would be wrong in that assumption. Based on the information above, if those books had sold from an authorized sales venue, my monthly income would be approximately $118,200.74 and the annual income would be $1,418,408.88.
Yes, those are serious numbers and they are right. That’s just with one author. Think about the thousands of authors on all authorized sales venues experiencing the same thing and you now know why we are so focused on stopping these pirates. Oh, they don’t only operate on individual websites. Torrents boasts some of the most difficult to take down pirate sites around.
The next time you see a giveaway of your favorite author’s book, make sure it’s from an authorized sales venue, or a site authorized to host this giveaway such as Book Bub. Don’t think the author has given up their book to potential readers for free. Even contacting this author through social media (Twitter and Facebook) will be wonderful. Please be sure to include the link to the website. We all thank you for helping us stop these pirates.

Exposing Danger

Welcome to Sunday Blog Share. Today, we’re continuing a look back at previous Canoples Investigations books, in preparation for the most recent release in this series. BD, Cassie, Carl, and Terry have always been about taking care of those around, especially little kids. They all have what they call “charity cases” where they don’t earn any creds, but they do make station life safer for children.

Get Canoples Investigations Exposes Space Dodger on Amazon!
In this episode, the crew faces something they’ve never before experienced and the books take on a a new look. BD is “grounded” after attacking a visitor to the station, a man he’s sure is Dr. Janos Markus—the father of Erin Markus and a despicable man who is cloning pets that become rabid. Instead of waiting on confirmation of his suspicions, BD dives into action and soon finds himself locked up in a small room to pay a penalty. In order for Security to complete an investigation they’d started long ago on another station, Cassie and Wade step in to take up where BD can’t in this new adventure.

There’s a carnival on the station, with all kinds of “legally” cloned animals, more than a few zero-G acrobats, and miniature clowns. BD’s ever present suspicious mind latches onto one thing when the advance team for Galactic Carnival arrives to begin preparations for a weeklong visit. The ringmaster looks familiar, but the man swears that he has never been to Canoples Station before. Even worse, children five and under are disappearing. A bit of investigating on BD’s part clues him in to the fact this has happened on every station Space Dodger Space Circus has visited so far. He’s determined to uncover the true identity of the ringmaster and solve the mystery of the missing children, but at what cost. Is BD willing to lose his lifelong friends to solve this case? Will they prove Jenna Rock, Wade’s girlfriend, isn’t involved?

The normal sounds of the promenade seem wrong. I have a sensation of impending doom, much like the moments before the space pirates showed up. The desire to leap into action is very strong, so much so that I’m literally leaning forward with my fists clenched at my side.
“Easy,” Carl murmurs. “You don’t know for sure it’s him.”

Of course, I know this man we’re watching is our quarry. How can I not know that? Not that his appearance is anywhere close to his daughter, who right now is aboard Fomalhaut for a very long stay. Erin Markus did lead Spacers Rule, a galaxy wide ring of splifters, but she wasn’t in charge.
Oh, no, she was far from in charge of those thieves. The person with that responsibility has just entered Canoples Station and is talking with none other than our less than ethical governor, but I have no definitive way of proving that.

Intimidated by Other Authors

It’s a wild and crazy world being an author in the twenty-first century. Literally thousands of books are uploaded to Amazon and other sales venues weekly. Many authors are no longer waiting two to three years to produce the next book in their series. They’re hard at work on the next book almost as soon as they have successfully launched their most recent tome. Authors who don’t write series are also getting their next book out just as quickly. This is truly a publish or perish world we’re living in.
As a new author, it’s very easy to feel intimidated by all of these people encouraging people to buy their books. You’re the new kid on the block with no clue how to fit in with everyone else. You’re a bit wary of approaching all these fabulous authors who fearlessly dive into social media on a daily basis, talk about their appearances, and share tidbits from their upcoming releases.
Even if you are with a publisher, you may feel overwhelmed by how easily their authors are attacking social media and making it work for them. You wonder where they come up with ideas for promotional tools and how they make them look so good, but you are too scared to ask for assistance and look like a newbie.
Fear not. Embrace the masters of social media. Approach them and ask for their assistance in making your book a success. There is no need to hire a media maven for hundreds of dollars a month to do this for you. That often becomes a waste of money when you can do it yourself. All you need to do is approach an author you admire and ask them how they create their social media promotion. You might be surprised at their response.
Those authors who have been in this game of promotion for a while know most of the ropes. We are always on the hunt for a new site to promote our work. Let it not be said we leave any rock unturned as we seek out new ways to get the word out about our books. Yes, it is daunting and a bit frightening to dive into these waters, but once you’re in them, you will soon find it’s as easy as swimming—in shark infested waters.
Yes, I did say shark infested waters. You need to put on your tough skin and prepare for criticism about your promotional tools. You will face snarky comments and unreasonable rants from those who have failed or are looking to eliminate the competition. Ignore those people. They will only create doubt where there should be none.
Instead of concentrating on the difficulties of social media promotion, focus on the benefits. You have a book that reads well. People have told you it’s great. So, don’t let anyone tell you otherwise. Ignore the reviews publicly that rip at your insecurities; don’t respond to them. Wave flags of victory for every good review and thank the reviewer in public. Learn when it’s time to switch the pace of your promotion and go for a different look.
One thing you should never do when it comes to blowing the horn that is your book is give up.

Social Issues in Space

Welcome to Tuesday Blog Share. Today, we’re talking about social issues on the moon. Abby Lockhart sees a problem and as a reporter, she has a way to get this information out to the people on the moon. There’s just one problem with reporting through normal channels. The reporters are given stories to report and they must follow certain guidelines. What’s an intrepid reporter to do in this situation?
Social issues are the hot topic these days. We’re all concerned about whatever affects us the most and aren’t afraid to talk about it on social media. After all, for the residents of the United States, free speech is one of our constitutionally guaranteed rights. So, we get to say what’s on our mine without any thought of repercussion. Right?

Get Moon Base Delta Tango on Amazon!

Now, imagine a future where the moon has been settled because of overcrowding on Earth. Other planets will soon be settled, since it’s getting a bit overcrowded on the moon. Only, there really aren’t any planets ready for settling yet even though pilgrims are coming through the moon’s deployment centers and allegedly taking off for their new homes.
Of course, the mega-conglomerate in charge of all this has to cover up their hideous scheme to deplete the population and they do so by having fueling center explosions. That’s when our reporter, Abby, comes into the picture and soon finds herself the target for a lot of trouble.
Blurb
Venus—a research habitat in the North Atlantic—learned to communicate with a very special young man long before humans inhabited her decks. Eleven years later, sixteen-year-old Mick Beaumont has long given up on his friend inside the computer. He’s determined to leave what he sees as a loser lifestyle and return to terra firma.
On the day of the scheduled rising, nothing happens as it should. Mick’s at a loss to explain the breakdowns, despite being the prime suspect. Determined to figure out the mystery, he enlists the aid of his girlfriend and best bud, only to have one betray him at a crucial moment.
The fate of the world is in this young man’s hands. Can he stop the eco-terrorists and bring Venus to the surface before planetary annihilation happens?
Excerpt

More than a millennia ago, humans settled on the moon. At first, the people sent to this station were those who had broken minor laws, where minute property damage occurred and there were no injuries. The idea was to allow these people to rehabilitate their lives without the temptation to return to the criminal activities that had gotten them in trouble in the first place.

The Great Experiment, as it was called, eventually became less of a campaign platform promising voters safer neighborhoods. When crime rates continued to rise and those self-same politicians more often than not were convicted of being in cahoots with those running the domes protecting the moon’s new residents, the programs were turned over to private enterprises, who, with the assistance of government grants, prepared the moon for habitation by ordinary citizens who won a lottery to escape the pollution making the planet an inhabitable nightmare. The semi-annual lottery, designed to be the fairest method of selecting new immigrants, was declared illegal by a court decision found by most to be one that leaned heavily in favor of the mega-conglomerate Metro-Vision.

Multiple Submissions

Your publisher is closing their doors, or you’ve requested the rights back to your book for whatever reason. As an author, you recognize that the cost if self-publishing is beyond you and you kind of like the familiarity of having a publisher.
Your first step, of course, is to ensure your books are in great shape. Perhaps you give them a light polish, knowing your former publisher did a pretty good job on editing. Or you might have your beta readers pick out the elements you felt weren’t quite smooth enough, so you aren’t giving a bad impression. This will take time, so you’re beginning your research on which publisher will be a good fit for your books.
While you’re waiting on those beta readers, you use the time to research publishers. Looking over their websites and checking out how active they are on social media will give you an idea of how this publisher or that goes to work for their authors. Another way is you happen to know one of their authors. You’re able to ask questions and get a feel from someone on the inside.
Once you’ve done all this, you’re ready to submit. You have several books that you want to get back out to your fans as fast as possible. Typically, most publishers only take one book at a time. But you don’t want that. Your deepest desire is to get a publisher to take all of your books that were previously published so you can get to work on new material.
This search can be long and complicated. You will need to read the guidelines carefully with each publisher’s website you see. You will need to check out their books to see if they publish not only in the genres you do but also the type of book you have. Another good thing to check out is if this publisher already has a book with the same title as yours; this doesn’t necessarily mean you can’t submit to this publisher but changing your title might be required if they do offer a contract.
While doing this, it is probably best to keep copious notes about each publisher’s website you visit, with the pros and cons of using that publisher listed. Many people consider this a slog and overlook this step, but it is important. You don’t want to think you’ll love being with Publisher ABC only to find out that you hate the authors and staff once you’ve signed a contract.
Finally, with all this information gathered, you should sit back and read your notes on these publishers. Have a list of their names on a sheet of paper and use some type of system to identify which ones you want to go to first. Be certain they accept simultaneous submissions.
Now that you’re ready and have received the comments from your beta readers and made the appropriate corrections, it’s time to submit. Eagerness runs through you. You are finally at the point where you are certain you’ll find a new home for your books. In fact, you’ve decided Publisher QYX is the one you desire to be with the most and you are on their submissions platform, with all of the information necessary to complete the upload of your book. Once that’s done, you pull up the notes for book two and begin a second submission and…
Hold on right there. Are you seriously going to submit multiple books to a publisher when you aren’t already one of their authors? Do you think that makes you look professional? What if only one of your books is accepted? What if this publisher is irritated that you submitted two, three, or even five books at once and they tell you no to all of them? Where are you now?
In truth, while some publishers do accept multiple submissions, it is probably better for you to submit only one book the first time you go to their site. This gives you and the publisher the chance to see if you really are a good fit. Then, only after your first book has been published, you can submit the others, after you ensure they accept multiple submissions.

New Adventure, More Trouble

Welcome to Sunday Blog Share. Today, on Everybody Reads YA, we’re going to be talking about the end of a series that’s a favorite of mine; one I’ve enjoyed writing for many years.
When we last left BD and his pals, they were coming down from the excitement of taking down a group of dirty, rotten Space Pirates. He’s finally come to terms with his dad’s betrayal and is ready for their next adventure.
Of course, he and the team must first deal with Missy Williams, a miniature BD. Just how is this all handled when a group of splifters, shoplifters, invade the station? Stay tuned and grab your copy today!

Get Canoples Investigations Versus Spacers Rule on Amazon!
There's a new crew in town, Spacers Rule, and they are putting Canoples Investigations through the hoops. In the two weeks since BD and his group of intrepid investigators took on the space pirates and aided in incarcerating them on the prison barge, Fomalhaut, the station has turned against them. Now, they have to prove they have exactly what it takes to compete as security consultants on the new industrial stations under construction, stop spacers rule from stealing anything not bolted down. Then there's the little matter of contaminated codos and re-kats, and Missy. Oh, yes, Missy is still around, and she's four now, and determined to be a junior BD.

A whole week has passed since the volcano on Io erupted. My crew and I are chillin’ on the promenade. Absolutely nothing will disturb us today. Nope. Not a thing that has a chance of interrupting the planned exploration of the latest set of test scores for the pilot’s license that will be posted within the hour.
“What do you think?” Terry asks. “Did we pass?”
Cassie snorts. Even though we’re now officially a couple, I give her a sideways crooked look. So what if she passed that test the first time without breaking a sweat? We guys have to keep up our reputation of not being able to land with those silly rules in place.
We could have passed the second time, or the third. We didn’t have to take the test five times. Really, we could have done a lot better before now.

Social Media Jerks

Social media sites are a boon for the twenty-first century author. Not only do we catch up with old friends and make new ones, we have the opportunity to expand our potential fan base. The smart author spends part of each day cultivating new readers not just by posting links to their books but keeping up with the latest hot meme or just talking about mutual interests with people in their group.
We, as authors, have a method to show our fans that we’re perfectly ordinary people with interests outside the computer generated tales we produce. We swap recipes, get all googly-eyed over celebrities we like, even talk about local events where we’ll be as a normal person—kids sports, a festival in town, or just hanging out at the mall.
What was a place where we visited occasionally has become our lives. Recently, we watched all day and night the unfolding events in Houston, Texas as Hurricane Harvey wreaked devastation not seen in a dozen years. At the same time, we wondered when fires in Oregon and Montana would be brought under control, of if those in the Los Angeles area would survive the unnatural heat bombarding them.
Parents have been doing the “kids are back in school” for more than a month now. Friday night football has replaced vacation news. Soon, we’ll be talking about Halloween, Thanksgiving, and all the winter holidays.
There is one element of social media we can’t avoid; the jerks that make comments on our posts. They’ll dive in unexpectedly, demanding our attention with a snarky mention of something completely off topic. Their whole reason for doing this is to get our attention and raise our ire.
The moment you see one of these comments on your post, your first instinct is to tell this person where to go. Your fingers are poised over the keyboard and you’re composing a suitably irritated response to their off tip comment. This individual will soon learn that you aren’t a person to put up with this type of activity.
Stop. Do not respond to that comment. Don’t let this person get under your skin.
Why? You are confused. Why shouldn’t you tell this jerk to get lost in a carefully crafted way, so they never act like this again? Isn’t that how you deal with bullies?
In the past, it was considered a good thing to take on a bully immediately. They often took off with their tail tucked between their legs once someone stood up to them. You are now living in the internet age. Bullies hide behind their smart phone or a computer screen. They use fake names to do their damage, or their real name if they’re past caring if someone knows who they are. Once you respond to them, you’re trapped. They will never leave you alone, until you block them. Even then, they might not be able to attack you directly, but they will do so where others will see their words and pass them back to you.
As an author, you need to temper your words on social media. Don’t get involved in hot topic discussions. Don’t jump onto a page to discuss politics, religion, or whatever is the latest breaking news story that has sharply divided sides. People will remember you, see your books, and know you have a weakness to exploit.
What is that weakness? They’ll go after your sales, telling people that you can’t be all that good a writer, since you support one politician over another. You’re a loss as a human being because you told everyone in this group they were losers. Or, you will lose fans. All it takes is one moment of weakness to destroy what has taken you years to gain.
Your best bet with social media jerks is to walk away from them silently.
