Just So Far Away
"I wanna see him on Christmas day.”
“No.”
A threat slips out before I take the time to think it through. “Do we need to go to court? Get a judge to tell you that I get my son during the holidays?”
“Court?” She scoffs. “You wanna take me on in court for custody of Colt? Have you forgotten what you did before this little change of heart you had? How you were a thief?”
The word shuts my eyes.
“Hm…What else is on your rap sheet? Vandalism? Assault?”
Her continuous recounting of the things I've done everything possible to move past and break free from, curls my fingers into a fist.
(I don't do those things anymore. Been clean since I've been out. Don't I get credit for that? Forgiveness? Shouldn't my ability to get my life together be taken into consideration? And don't bother over thinking the charges. I've done some dumb things in my life, including knocking her up. Good things has come out of bad situations is my point. My son. Me and Tee. My job with Theo. Come to think about it...the best things have grown from my broken past.)
“You really think some judge is going to care about the last few months in comparison to the last few YEARS? Ha. You don't even have a permanent residence! I'm a married woman with a great job and a husband who has a good one, too. Go ahead. Do it. Take me to court, Isaac. Take me and watch them rip Colt out of your life so fast that you get whiplash. Take me to court and really see how nice I've been about this whole thing...”
