Merry everything to you

bedfordshire

I’m tucked away in the English countryside with my partner, sister, her girlfriend, a puppy called Beauly, and David Copperfieldon my ereader. We have a chook and a ham, plenty of booze, and space all around us. The puppy is hard work! But when she looks at you with those big black eyes, you forgive all the nips and crying in the night.

It’s not long until our adventure is over! We’ve spent a good deal of time in England, Scotland, Norway and Spain. We’ve worked and volunteered. I finished two...

The story of my book, for the Readings blog

the-hollywood-tower-hotel

While I was writing my thesis I’d get hooked on different TV series and watch episodes at night while my partner was at work. I managed to turn mySimpsonsmarathons into a chapter in my exegesis, and it was while watching the original series ofThe Twilight Zonethat the bookThe Great Unknownwas born. We can also thank social media.

I tweeted one night about entering the Zone and Bronwyn Mehan, the publisher at Spineless Wonders, told me she’d always wanted to put together an anthology based on t...

The Luminaries by Eleanor Catton

LuminariesThe Luminaries

Eleanor Catton

Little, Brown

Winner of the 2013 Man Booker Prize

I’ve woken up around 4am the past couple of nights thinking about this book. My thoughts on it aren’t final but this is a space where conversations happen, and I need to talk.

The Luminaries is an engaging page-turner, a mystery set in a 19th Century New Zealand gold town. It’s a successful pastiche of the Victorian novel, with omniscient narration (informing and withholding from the reader at will; descri...

Maria Takolander’s The Double

The Double Maria Takolander9781922079763

Text Publishing

August 2013

One of the best contemporary short story collections I’ve read, Takolander’s fictions are intellectual, dark, strange and often dystopian. The tone is of casual realism, but what’s described is beyond that: fantastical, nightmarish or just off; my favourite kind of fiction. If you like Kafka or Beckett, or MJ Hyland for that matter, you’ll like Takolander; or if you find meaninglessness meaningful. Or if you like your imagery as dark crystals:

a woman rem...
