August 22nd, 2012 at 11:21 pm It was an honour and a privilege to meet Joy and George during their visit to Kariba in the late 60′s. What an incredible tribute to mankind. I do so admire those who have the courage to follow their hearts. The Adamson’s did just that. Joy too is a woman after my own heart.. there’s no temple more magnificent than the wilds, no miracle more breathtaking than an African sunset and no sermon more moving than the roar of a lion.. that is freedom. Wild Harley Alberto Rodrigues, or Al as his friends called him, was proud of his new acquisition. It had cost him a year’s salary even though the Harley was second hand.  He’d taken delivery in Beira and was on his way to Vilanculos to meet up with some friends.  Having grown up in Africa he was used to dodging elephant, buffalo, snakes, the odd buck and even lion on occasion, crossing the road, but never an old wild woman in blue pyjamas. No way would his friends believe this! (Read the rest of this story in 'My Funny Africa)

NB: 'The Wall of Fame' at the moment is more of 'a record' of all who've gallantly contributed their stories and/or artwork   Unfortunately the publication only allows for 400 pages (+100 illustrated anecdotes). The final edit will be announced before the end of the year when only the very best will remain on 'The Wall of Fame'. If any of you think you can improve on or feel you'd like to embellish your stories in any way, now is the time! All you have to do is resubmit them here.

My Most Embarrassing Moment

It was 1969 in Rhodesia - I was 13. My family and I and numerous friends headed off as we usually did in the school holidays to our favourite spot, Mana Pools, on the banks of the Zambezi river to fish, game view and relax.

In those good old days Mana was wild. There were no fenced areas for camping, let alone toilet blocks for civilized ablutions, but we were very organized, even our faithful cook was brought along.  We chose a suitable spot on the banks of the river with a good view over the rapidly flowing water and set up camp under tall shady  trees. A little way up stream we dug a “long drop”, the proverbial hole-in-the-ground "toilet",  screened by the natural long elephant thatching grass. Bathing was done in the river keeping a wary eye out for crocs and hippos.

We settled in and as afternoon gave way to evening we noticed a herd of elephant come down to the river for a bathe and  drink right in front of our camp. We gathered to watch their antics but it soon became too dark to see well enough. Someone in the group moved a vehicle to the bank and turned the lights onto the elephant. Unfortunately at this precise moment nature called, so I quickly headed across to our “long drop”. No sooner had I sat down when all hell broke loose..

Few places in Africa are now safe from the bloody ivory poaching epidemic that is sweeping the Continent fuelled by unrestrained demand in China and the Far East (www.bloodyivory.org). But while the world’s attention has been focussed on the slaughter of elephants in Tanzania, in Chad and, most recently in Dzanda Sangha in the Central African Republic, West Africa’s largest remaining elephant population is also under threat.
To contribute to this noble cause, order your own hard cover of My Funny Africa now. Submit your order below and upon publication it will be signed by a celebrity whose identity will be announced shortly..

Rhodesia (now Zimbabwe) Picture Mount Melory was way north of Inyanga, a place where white men seldom ventured.  It was a Catholic mission station. Brave Irish nuns had been sent there to stop paganism. Every year young maidens were sacrificed to the ‘rain gods’,  cruelly thrown from high up on the Mount to their deaths below. It nearly always worked as miraculously the rain would fall shortly after these savage events! If it didn’t work more maidens were sacrificed until the rain gods were satisfied.. when  the rain came.  I was shown this natural stone ‘throne’. At the highest point the weather had worn it smooth and hollowed out. A shudder ran through my young body as I sat there, imagining what it must have felt like, being one of those unfortunate maidens...

Mugabe’s Elephants
Anonymous
                                                                                  Zambia

Due to the very late start to the rainy season and the lack of browse and graze in the National Park and the bush surrounding Livingstone, the town itself was invaded most nights by herds of Elephant searching for food. They walked right up the main road through the town and then fanned out into the residential suburbs looking for such delicacies as paw-paws, mangoes and guavas. Before the sun rose they moved back to the Zambezi and, under the shade of a Natal Mahogany, discussed and planned the next night’s foray into town. Of course, these Elephant crossed the river some months ago from Zimbabwe where they’ve been behaving like this for some years in the town of Victoria Falls. As a result of their bad behaviour and seemingly no one willing or able to stop them, these Elephant are referred to as ‘Mugabe’s Elephant’ or very occasionally ‘ZANU-PF Elephant’ due to their total disregard for fences, gates, humans, dogs or even land rights.
