Happy Debut YA Book Birthday

I hope everyone had a great Easter and is fully gorged on chocolate bunnies and jelly beans. It's now time to break out the cake for some more debut YA book birthday celebrations! And while we're at it, let's eat some MORE cake, because today is my beautiful momma's birthday. Happy Birthday, Mommy!
Spectral by Shannon Duffy (I'm reading this right now!)

Convinced she's a part of the witness protection program, sixteen-year-old Jewel Rose is shuffled around the globe with her family like a pack of traveling gypsies. After arriving at lucky home twenty-seven, she stumbles upon a mysterious boy with magical powers claiming to be her guardian . . . and warning of imminent danger. Despite the obvious sparks between them, Jewel discovers a relationship is forbidden, and the more she learns about dark, brooding Roman, she begins to question who she can even believe — the family who raised her, or the supposed sworn protector who claims they've been lying to her all along.

As she struggles to uncover who her family has really been running from, she is forced to hide her birthmark that reveals who she is. With new realities surfacing, unexplained powers appearing, and two tempting boys vying for her heart, Jewel battles to learn who she can trust in an ever growing sea of lies, hoping she'll make it through her seventeenth birthday alive.

The White Oak by Kim White

In The White Oak, the first book in the Imperfect Darkness series, Cora Alexander falls through a sinkhole and enters the underworld still alive. Her living presence threatens the tyrannical rule of Minos and the infernal judges who have hijacked the afterlife and rebuilt it, trapping human souls in a mechanical, computer-controlled city that lies at the core of the earth. To survive, Cora must rely on her untrustworthy guide, Minotaur, an artificial intelligence built by Minos. She is helped by a mysterious voice, and by Sybil, underworld librarian and author of each person's book of life. Sybil's collection holds the key to humankind's intertwined life stories. When Cora's own book is destroyed, Sybil gives her a magical golden pen and sends her to the underworld city to write her own destiny. Along the way, Cora finds the ghost of her dead brother, Lucas, a genius programmer who alone is capable of finding the chink in Minos's armor. But will he be able to get Cora out alive, or will they both succumb to the seemingly inescapable underworld trap?

Ripper by Amy Carol Reeves

"I felt hot breath on my neck, and, horrified, I knew that he stood behind me . . ."
It's 1888, and after her mother's sudden death, Abbie is sent to live with her grandmother in a posh London neighborhood. When she begins volunteering at Whitechapel Hospital, Abbie finds she has a passion for helping the abused and sickly women there.
But within days, patients begin turning up murdered at the hands of Jack the Ripper. As more women are murdered, Abbie realizes that she and the Ripper share a strange connection: she has visions showing the Ripper luring his future victims to their deaths—moments before he turns his knife upon them. Her desperation to stop the massacres leads Abbie on a perilous hunt for the killer. And her search leads to a mysterious brotherhood whose link to the Ripper threatens not just London but all of mankind.
Emerald City by Alicia K. Leppert
Olivia Tate is a broken shell of a girl haunted by the tragic events that fill her past. She has closed herself off from the world, each day grasping at something—anything—to live for. Convinced there will never be a way out, she seeks solace in the depths of her medicine cabinet. When she wakes up days later in the hospital she is introduced to Jude, the quiet stranger responsible for saving her life. She never could have guessed then that her mysterious rescuer would end up saving her life a second time, while simultaneously turning her world upside down.

Child of the Mountains by Mary Sue Shank
It's about keeping the faith.
Growing up poor in 1953 in the Appalachian Mountains of West Virginia doesn't bother Lydia Hawkins. She treasures her tight-knit family. There's her loving mama, now widowed; her whip-smart younger brother, BJ, who has cystic fibrosis; and wise old Gran. But everything falls apart after Gran and BJ die and mama is jailed unjustly. Suddenly Lydia has lost all those dearest to her.

Moving to a coal camp to live with her uncle William and aunt Ethel Mae only makes Lydia feel more alone. She is  ridiculed at her new school for her outgrown homemade clothes and the way she talks, and for what the kids believe her mama did. And to make matters worse, she discovers that her uncle has been keeping a family secret—about her.
If only Lydia, with her resilient spirit and determination, could find a way to clear her mother's name. . . .

Remarkable by Lizzie K. Foley (April 12th) A wonderfully whimsical debut that proves ordinary people can do extraordinary things

In the mountain town of Remarkable, everyone is extraordinarily talented, extraordinarily gifted, or just plain extraordinary. Everyone, that is, except Jane Doe, the most average ten-year-old who ever lived. But everything changes when the mischievous, downright criminal Grimlet twins enroll in Jane's school and a strange pirate captain appears in town.

Thus begins a series of adventures that put some of Remarkable's most infamous inhabitants and their long-held secrets in danger. It's up to Jane, in her own modest style, to come to the rescue and prove that she is capable of some rather exceptional things.

With a page-turning mystery and larger-than-life cast of characters, Lizzie K. Foley's debut is nothing short of remarkable.

I hadn't heard of any of these (except Spectral, of course) before I did my post, but I gotta say, I'm intrigued. How about you?

Cindy Hogan Shares Her Dream Cast for WATCHED

If you haven't heard of Cindy Hogan and her novels, today's your lucky day.  Cindy came by to tell us about her debut YA novel, WATCHED, and share her "dream cast" of characters.  After the character's names, Cindy provides a 1-sentence description of each, which just adds to my desire to read this book!
[image error] First, a little about WATCHED ~

It takes more than a school trip to Washington, D.C. to change fifteen-year-old Christy's life. It takes murder.
A witness to the brutal slaying of a Senator's aide, Christy finds herself watched not only by the killers and the FBI, but also by two hot boys.
She discovers that if she can't help the FBI, who want to protect her, it will cost her and her new friends their lives.

Christy (Ashley Benson) - Reserved main character who's forced to be stronger than she ever thought possible after witnessing a political murderRick (Drew Roy) -  Sincere and steady guy who would make the ideal boyfriend. And he wants Christy. Alex (Robbie Amel) - Ultra hot guy, who's charisma forces all girls to worship him, including ChristyMarybeth (Isla Fisher) - Christy's loyal friend and roommate, who almost loses her mind after witnessing the brutal murder.  Kira (Lindsey Lohan) - sassy, boy-crazy, fickle girl that pretends to be your friend when really, she's only looking out for herself.Eugene (Kevin McHale) - The super brain of the group. The male counterpart of Christy. Summer (Blake Lively) -  Beautiful girl who always gets what she wants and she doesn't want Christy to be a part of her groupJosh (Liam Hemsworth) -  The group's meat-head super jock that falls hard for Summer [image error] Mrs. J (Juliette Binoche or Annette Benning) - Resourceful and yet stretched-too-thin head chaperon of the student political tour
Senator Randolph (Peter Sarsgaard) -  Senator of Iowa who gets messed up with the terrorists and watches his aide "lose" his head
[image error] [image error] Jeremy (Channing Tatum) - good-looking FBI special agent that is the primary protector of Christy
Nathan (Jesse Metcalf) - Jeremy's loyal partner
[image error] [image error] Iceman (Jared Leto) - The terrorist assigned to follow Christy and discover what she saw
Leader (Faran Tahir) - The man that orders the execution of the senator's aide
Yeah, I'd say that's a pretty nice-looking cast.  Can't wait to embark on this far-from-normal field trip with Christy and the rest of her class.  And right now, WATCHED is only $.99!! Cindy's second novel in the series, PROTECTED, just released.  You can get them both at Amazon or Barnes & Noble.  You can also find Cindy online at her blog or on Twitter.

To continue on with Cindy's blog tour, please check out her post on How to Launch a YA Print Novel.

What would you do if you had to work with the FBI to save your life and the life of your friends? Would you think it was cool or would you be scared out of your minds?

Happy Debut YA Book Birthday

It's only Tuesday, but why not have a party? It's time to celebrate the birth of these debut YA novels.
April Fools Day Baby ~

Above by Leah Bobet
An extraordinary debut urban fantasy about dangers outside and in.

"Above pulls off that rare trick of being convincing and utterly magical at the same time."
- Emma Donoghue, NYT bestselling author of ROOM

Matthew has loved Ariel from the moment he found her in the tunnels, her bee's wings falling away. They live in Safe, an underground refuge for those fleeing the city Above--like Whisper, who speaks to ghosts, and Jack Flash, who can shoot lightning from his fingers.

But one terrifying night, an old enemy invades Safe with an army of shadows, and only Matthew, Ariel, and a few friends escape Above. As Matthew unravels the mystery of Safe's history and the shadows' attack, he realizes he must find a way to remake his home--not just for himself, but for Ariel, who needs him more than ever before.

ABOVE is the debut of an amazing new voice.

Maddy is swiftly caught up in Jackson's scene, a world of glamour, paparazzi - and murder. A serial killer is on the loose, leaving dead Angels' wings for the police to find on the Walk of Fame. Even the Guardians are powerless to protect themselves in the face of this threat … and this time it's up to Maddy to save Jackson.

Grave Mercy: His Fair Assassin (Book 1) by Robin LaFevers

Why be the sheep, when you can be the wolf?Seventeen-year-old Ismae escapes from the brutality of an arranged marriage into the sanctuary of the convent of St. Mortain, where the sisters still serve the gods of old. Here she learns that the god of Death Himself has blessed her with dangerous gifts—and a violent destiny. If she chooses to stay at the convent, she will be trained as an assassin and serve as a handmaiden to Death. To claim her new life, she must destroy the lives of others.
Ismae's most important assignment takes her straight into the high court of Brittany—where she finds herself woefully under prepared—not only for the deadly games of intrigue and treason, but for the impossible choices she must make. For how can she deliver Death's vengeance upon a target who, against her will, has stolen her heart?

Looks like April's off to a pretty good start. Any of these going on your TBR pile?

COVER REVEAL x 2

Wow, guys, do I have a treat for you.  Two of my online friends are having cover reveals today, so you get to experience the newness times 2.

First, Alicia Kat Dillman, is releasing a second edition of her novel, DAEMONS IN THE MIST. It has been revised for some formatting issues and has a brand new, stunning cover. I read the first edition last year and really, really enjoyed it, as you can see from my review.

So, without further ado, I give you the new cover ~
What do you think?  I told you it was stunning! Now, here's the summary:

Finally getting the girl of your dreams; what could possibly go wrong?
Seventeen year old Patrick Connolly has been hopelessly infatuated with Nualla for years but he is all but invisible to her. Until, that is, he rescues her from a confrontation with her ex. Little does Patrick know he's just set off a dangerous chain reaction that will thrust him into a world of life altering secrets and things that shouldn't exist, because the fog and mist of San Francisco is concealing more than just buildings.

A deliriously captivating and exhilarating romantic rollercoaster full of unexpected twists and an ending you won't see coming.
Print ● Kindle ● NookWatch the book trailerCheck out Kat's website
And before you leave, watch the book trailer.  Yeah, it's awesome too!!
Second, my fellow Indelible author, Heather McCorkle, shares the stunning cover of her new novel, TO RIDE A PUCA.

Heather: I'm so excited to share the cover of my young adult historical fantasy novel, To Ride A Púca, with you. I've been waiting for so long to reveal the news and the cover that it's been driving me crazy! This novel is special to me, as many of you know, because it felt like my heart and soul has gone into it. It isn't a part of the channeler series, though it is a tie-in novel as it's about one of Eren's ancestors. This is a stand alone of a very different flavor and I hope you love it as much as I do.

Here is a bit about it:

Invaders are coming to take what isn't theirs, again.

Neala wants to stand and fight for her homeland, but as one of the last druids, she may be standing alone.

Persecuted, hunted down, forced to live in obscurity, the druids have all but given up. Can the determination of a girl who has barely come into her power bring them together? Or, just when she finally finds her place among her kind, will they end up losing a homeland their very magic is tied to?

This novel is intended for mature teens and adults as it contains some difficult subject matter.
I had to throw that warning in because I had one person who was disturbed by some of the subject matter in The Secret Of Spruce Knoll. To Ride A Púca is a much darker novel than Spruce Knoll and will certainly not be appropriate for some readers. Slavery, oppression, and violent situations are within this novel. It certainly falls under the dark YA catagory. But it is also about hope, love, and belonging. It releases this May! To add this novel to your Goodreads lists click here. To pre-order a signed hardback (to ship at the end of May), click here.

So what do you think? Do I have some awesome writing buddies, or what?

Charity Hopping Around the World

Now tell me this isn't an amazing idea for a blog hop ~ you visit various blogs to learn about some great charities out there and could win a prize in return.  Thanks to I am a Reader, Not a Writer, Reading Away the Days and Reading a Little Bit of Everything for sponsoring this ingenious hop.
At this stop, I am going to tell you about Joy Jars, the brain child of a child suffering from pediatric cancer, Jessie Joy Reese.  As told from NEGU Foundation website (that stands for Never Ever Give Up):

JoyJars™ were inspired by 12 year old Jessie Rees in March of 2011 as a way to help spread hope, joy and love to other kids fighting cancer.  Jessie and her parents came up with the idea after learning of Jessie's diagnosis of brain cancer.  While Jessie fights her two inoperable brain tumors, she chooses to bless other kids fighting cancer by sending them JoyJars™.
During 2011, Jessie and the JoySquad were able to fill over 3,000 JoyJars™ for kids.  They were sent to over 27 states and 7 Children's Hospitals.  Jessie's Wish is to send a JoyJars™ to every kid fighting cancer in the United States.  That is over 50,000!
You can help Jessie spread joy by making a charitable donation to JoyJars™.

Okay, cue the water works right about now. A child dying from cancer just wants to make sure other kids are happier??  I want to help and I want my own kids to help.  In addition to giving money, here are some of the volunteer opportunities available:

If you would like to help volunteer your time and talents there are many opportunities for you at NEGU…

Happy Debut YA Book Birthday

Tuesday, Tuesday, Tuesday.
Happy debut book birthday wishes go out to:

Slide by Jill Hathaway (I WANT THIS!!)

Vee Bell is certain of one irrefutable truth—her sister's friend Sophie didn't kill herself. She was murdered.Vee knows this because she was there. Everyone believes Vee is narcoleptic, but she doesn't actually fall asleep during these episodes: When she passes out, she slides into somebody else's mind and experiences the world through that person's eyes. She's slid into her sister as she cheated on a math test, into a teacher sneaking a drink before class. She learned the worst about a supposed "friend" when she slid into her during a school dance. But nothing could have prepared Vee for what happens one October night when she slides into the mind of someone holding a bloody knife, standing over Sophie's slashed body.Vee desperately wishes she could share her secret, but who would believe her? It sounds so crazy that she can't bring herself to tell her best friend, Rollins, let alone the police. Even if she could confide in Rollins, he has been acting distant lately, especially now that she's been spending more time with Zane.Enmeshed in a terrifying web of secrets, lies, and danger and with no one to turn to, Vee must find a way to unmask the killer before he or she strikes again.

After the Snow by S. D. Crockett
The oceans stopped working before Willo was born, so the world of ice and snow is all he's ever known. He lives with his family deep in the wilderness, far from the government's controlling grasp. Willo's survival skills are put to the test when he arrives home one day to find his family gone. It could be the government; it could be scavengers--all Willo knows is he has to find refuge and his family. It is a journey that will take him into the city he's always avoided, with a girl who needs his help more than he knows.

The Stalker Chronicles by Carley Moore
Sophomore Cammie Bliss has long been labeled a stalker by her peers, but when a cute new boy named Toby arrives at her small town high school, Cammie has a chance to be "normal." Trouble is, she can't really help herself and she's up to her old tricks of "intense observation and following" pretty quick. Making things worse, her younger brother is dating one of the most popular girls in the school, her parents have separated, and her dad has begun to watch their house most nights. Cammie has simply got to figure out why she behaves the way she does, and end it once and for all.

Happy Debut YA Book Birthday

Whew -- I almost missed the boat on this week's post. Sorry about that. I blame my recent vacation and floor remodel.
So, here are two new debut YA novels making their way into the world today ~

CROAK by Gina Damico
Sixteen-year-old Lex Bartleby has sucker-punched her last classmate. Fed up with her punkish, wild behavior, her parents ship her off to upstate New York to live with her Uncle Mort for the summer, hoping that a few months of dirty farm work will whip her back into shape. But Uncle Mort's true occupation is much dirtier than that of shoveling manure.

He's a Grim Reaper. And he's going to teach her the family business.

Lex quickly assimilates into the peculiar world of Croak, a town populated entirely by reapers who deliver souls from this life to the next. Along with her infuriating yet intriguing partner Driggs and a rockstar crew of fellow Grim apprentices, Lex is soon zapping her Targets like a natural born Killer.

Yet her innate ability morphs into an unchecked desire for justice—or is it vengeance?—whenever she's forced to Kill a murder victim, craving to stop the attackers before they can strike again. So when people start to die—that is, people who aren't supposed to be dying, people who have committed grievous crimes against the innocent—Lex's curiosity is piqued. Her obsession grows as the bodies pile up, and a troubling question begins to swirl through her mind: if she succeeds in tracking down the murderer, will she stop the carnage—or will she ditch Croak and join in?

SEEING CINDERELLA by Jenny Lunquist
Calliope Meadow Anderson wishes her life could be more of a fairy tale—just like the stories she writes. Her best friend, Ellen, is acting weird, her parent's marriage is falling apart, and to top things off, she found out she needs hideously large and geeky glasses.

But Callie soon learns they aren't just any glasses—they are magical and let her read people's thoughts. For the first time ever she's answering all the questions right in math class, and gets a glimpse of what goes through people's minds all day, including what Ellen—and her longtime crush—really think of her.

As if dealing with these crazy glasses weren't enough, Callie tries out for the lead in her school's production of Cinderella and actually gets the part. Instead, Callie chooses to let Ellen have the lead and be Ellen's understudy—just like she has done for their entire friendship.

Add in a new girl who has something to hide, a secret admirer, a best friend stealer who isn't what she seems, and Callie's year just went from ordinary to extraordinary.

Can this supporting actress learn to be a leading lady in her own life? Or is she destined to stay in the background forever—even with her super-freaky-magic glasses?

Pretty much polar opposites, eh? Will you be reading either?

The Happiness Blog Tour & Giveaway

Bryan Cohen here, guest poster and author, promoting my new book The Post-College Guide to Happiness for The Happiness Blog Tour. I'm giving away free digital review copies of the book and doing a giveaway for paperback copies, audio copies and even a Kindle Fire! Read on and check out the info below the post.

"People are at their happiest if they are true to themselves. I think that applies to their chosen profession, friends and relationships...If you are true to yourself, it seems to me everything should work out pretty well."
- Bebe Neuwirth

Self-Honesty
I realize that this quote isn't by a happiness scholar or a famous philosopher, but there's no reason that an actress couldn't come up with a truly profound statement about happiness. Honesty is difficult in a world where little white lies are used constantly. Honesty to oneself can be even more difficult. The phase "Ignorance is bliss" is frequently used, but this quote seems to go against it.
How can you be honest to yourself about your profession? First of all, it's important to know if what you're doing is your calling in life or something you're doing to pay the bills. Those who are happiest tend to understand the difference between the two and they spend ample time on doing what they love in the world. You also need to be honest with yourself about how much stress is a necessary evil at your job and how much you're creating for yourself. Those who can keep their negative emotions out of their jobs are frequently more full of joy.
Do you have an honest relationship with your friends? I think that happiness can be majorly enhanced by having several close, caring and honest relationships. Some people try to collect friendships like Pokémon, thinking that if they get more than everybody else they've somehow won. Since many of these friendships have the chance of being superficial, you risk the possibility that these relationships won't have a lot of honesty. They'll be used for drinking and partying as opposed to having a person you can actually talk to about life. It doesn't matter if you have a lot of friends if the ones you have are awesome.
Are your relationships with your significant other and your family honest? The best relationships at fostering happiness are the ones in which you and your partner are on the same page. This doesn't mean that you have to have the same exact goals or the same movie preferences. It just means that each of you know what your goals are and you're both supportive of each other achieving them. The same goes for family. If your family is supportive of what you want in life and you give your family the support they need back, you can't help but have a happier life. Honesty is scary sometimes with your partner or your family, because you might worry that saying certain things might push them away. In the end though, honesty with them and with yourself will lead to a happiness that lasts.
