Twitter Weekly Updates for 2011-05-29

Back from California. Heading to New York for BookExpo. Tweets from the floor forthcoming. #
Eating potato pancakes at Ben's Kosher Deli & Restaurant on West 38th. Need carbs in order to go set up the Peace Hill Press booth at BEA. #

Gate agent at LGA: "The lavatory on this aircraft is nonfunctional. Please use facilities at gate before boarding." Not a good sign. #
Life expectancy of a French manicure in New York: 7 days (with care). On a Charles City farm: Approximately 7.25 hours. Ask me how I know. #
I want to go running. I want to go running. I want to go running. Nope, that's not working. #
Coated myself with three different chemicals to get through my morning run unbitten and unburnt. Ah, summer in Virginia. #

From the floor of BookExpoAmerica, Day #2

Today's my last day here; the show goes on for one more day, but I'll be leaving the booth in capable PHP hands and heading home. There hasn't been a lot of writing going on. I think most writers find that peripheral activities (travelling, speaking, publicity, emails, blogging, etc.) very quickly capture center stage, while the writing itself is happy to slide off into the wings. Making a living as a writer involves a constant struggle to push the noisy happy peripheral activities back offstage, where they belong, and drag the shrinking-violet star back into the spotlight.

Here are a few more scenes from this second day of noisy peripheral activity.

The Guinness World Records people adding a little happiness to the show floor:

A couple of valiant publicists putting their best feet forward:

One of the many nut-job vendors around the edge of the hall:

The Librarian Lounge:

And the charmingly-named "Autograph Chutes" that channel fans towards the signing table.

This year's show is definitely busier and more upbeat than last year's. Now it just remains to be seen whether all the conversations we've been having with librarians, booksellers, columnists, reporters, and foreign publishers…actually translate into book sales.

From the floor of BookExpoAmerica, Day #1

We're here at the Peace Hill Press booth at BookExpoAmerica, the big national trade publishing show that happens every May–usually in New York, occasionally in other cities. Here's our booth (Pattie, my executive assistant, and Mollie, our Peace Hill Press marketing coordinator):

and Moll with me.

Hundreds of publishers at this, as usual: here's Scholastic,

and a couple of booths at the International Pavilion.

And here's my favorite part of BookExpo: authors desperately trying to make their books stand out from the vast sea of titles.

"Ballad of a Bagpiper"

"Stories from the Golden Age"

"The Mermaid Chef"

"Proving God"

More photos tomorrow…

Twitter Weekly Updates for 2011-05-22

Epically busy day today: church, big party, many preparations for next week. Could have done without the dog pooping all over DD10's rug. #
DH's 1st-class birthday-present flight to SF CANCELLED by United. Rebooked us on later flight, coach. No explanations, no refund. Appalling. #
Will never, never, never fly United again. (Would like to point out that tickets were Continental when I bought them.) #
No thanks to United, we are HERE…and it is truly lovely. Now taking deep breaths. Good Napa Valley air in, bad airplane air out. #
3-hour lunch w/old friends from seminary. Unbelievably affirming to discover you've been travelling same general direction in past 20 years. #
Today's Pete's actual fiftieth birthday. Planning a trip along Route 1 up to Bodega Bay. And the sun is out! #
Changed plans mid-drive today: Rte 1 to Santa Cruz, saw giant redwoods at Big Basin state park, came back through Santa Cruz mountain range. #
Went and took pictures of the French Laundry today like a desperate food groupie. #
Harold Camping might have been onto something. I think the apocalypse is beginning at the United terminal in San Francisco. #

Email from UVA: Tuition payments for Fall 2011 will begin in June. Um…payments for Spring 2011 just ended in April. Ah, May, I love you. #
Is "sledge" an example of onomatopoeia? What do you think? #
Very late lunch at Lord Hardwicke's in Charlottesville. Feel it isn't really necessary for teenage waitress to keep calling me "hon." #
I just made the best cake batter ever. (Preparations for dh's 50th birthday party now ramping up!) #

Many, many possums out on the roads of Charles City tonight. Most still alive. #
Just bought Virginia rainbow trout, freshwater prawns, Thai basil, and leeks at the Williamsburg farmer's market. Good dinner tonight! #
Found the perfect table in front of Aromas to do some difficult editing work….perfect until two teenaged boys with ukeles show up. #
Working at one of the tables on Merchant's Square in Williamsburg. Prom-goers in taffeta and bow-ties parading by. #

New writing and grammar books…check out our new poster/ad!

Thanks to the Peace Hill Press team (that would be Justin and Mollie) who came up with THIS brilliant ad for my upcoming middle-grade writing and grammar books and the accompanying creative writing manual.

I suggested the headline. As you can probably tell, I have taught three boys to write.
