Blog Highlight: Tales of Topaz the Yellow Conjure Cat
This blog is a bit different this week as it is based on a series and its comings and goings—These cleverly woven and original tales of a magic cat, his pals and the magical land they live in will truly captivate anyone who loves mystical stories of high adventure. The reader is drawn into the amazing Kingdom of Knownotten and introduced to unforgettable characters. The classic fight of good vs. evil is waged in a world inhabited by Fairies, Elves, Gnomes, Wizards and talking animals. All of these creatures coexist in a complex and beautiful land of peril and wonder. The author has crafted a truly well-rounded and enchanting story, rich with suspense, humor and tenderness.
A bit about Ms. Frayne;
Pat Frayne, grandmother, writer, and retired registered nurse, lives in a small town in Northern Arizona with her husband, Ron and their adopted black lab, Charlie. The inspiration for the book, Topaz and the Plum-Gista Stone and the character, Daisy, came from their nine year old granddaughter, Caitlin. Pat and Cait alike share a love for cats and all things fantasy.

Q & A with Samantha Livingston
*****
Samantha Livingston is an indie author with an interest in many different genres including Westerns, Romance, Teen, and Animal lover’s books.
When did you start writing and why?
I have been writing since I was little because it was something I was good at and enjoyed doing. It took me to other worlds and I could decide what happened in these worlds.
If you are a parent how does being a parent affect your writing and writing habits? Or does it?
I am not yet a parent but someday when I am I suspect I will have to change my writing schedule to work around my parenting. The parenting will always come first. I’m sure the ideas will still be there though!
Who is your favorite author and why?
I don’t think I have a specific favorite author because I like so many different genres.
What do you hope to accomplish with your writing?
I hope that my writing will always keep the reader interested and cause them to feel many different emotions while reading it.
Traditional or Self publishing? Why?
I self publish mainly because it gives me the freedom to be me and write what I want. I have all the rights to my work and I do not have to work on a deadline. That is a freeing feeling.
Talk about your journey into the wide world of publishing
I wrote my first novel “A Matter of Loyalty, A Question of Forgiveness” a year ago and I knew I wanted to get it published. It was this past April, over a year later, that I discovered Lulu.com through a friend who also uses their services. I am already working on two more books and I could not be happier with Lulu.com! I am exactly where I wanted to be at this point in my life!
Tell us about your book (s)
As stated before, my book is a Western, Romance titled “A Matter of Loyalty, A Question of Forgiveness” and it is about a young woman named Katrina whose husband, Dave has gone away quiet often during their marriage of five years. She starts to believe he is an outlaw but there might just be more to the story than she realizes.
What inspired you to write these books (or in this genre)?
I have always loved Westerns. My favorite show since I was about ten has been “Bonanza” so I knew I wanted to write a Western before anything else.
Tell us why we should love or hate your main character?
All of the main characters have traits that can make you love them, some maybe more than others. Even when you think some are not very likeable, you realize you can’t help but love them.
Do(es) your book(s) have a soundtrack?
I tend to listen to music when I write a majority of the time. Sometimes I write in silence but most of the time I’m listening to Country Music, Rock Music, or sometimes even Disney songs.

Thanks Samantha for joining us this week! You can follow her on Facebook and her blog! Her book is available on Lulu and Amazon!

Q & A with Lorrie Farrelly
What a treat this week! Please welcome 3 time Jeopardy! winner Lorrie Farrelly!
*****
What would your bio say?

She’s a three-time winner on Jeopardy! (despite forgetting the chemical symbol for sulfuric acid … oh, wait – she never knew that in the first place). She has shepherded wide-eyed foreign exchange students along Hollywood Blvd. (“As many stars and lunatics as there are in the Heavens”), and happily curried and shoveled as a ranch hand at Disneyland’s Circle D Ranch. And always, she writes.
Lorrie has won a Presidential Commendation for Excellence in Teaching Mathematics. She’s been a Renaissance nominee for Teacher of the Year and a finalist for the Orange Rose Award in romantic fiction. She’s never won the lottery, except where her family is concerned. For her, they’re the ultimate prize.
When did you start writing and why?
I’ve written stories as long as I can remember. I wasn’t terribly interested in playing with dolls, except to write stories for them or play “school” with them. Still, I never seriously thought about writing a novel until a chance discovery compelled me to.
In an old box of papers and keepsakes I found a faded copy of an oath of allegiance to the United States signed by my Confederate great-great-grandfather at the end of the Civil War, as well as a parole pass allowing him to go home – if he swore never again to take up arms against the Union.
I needed to understand what would be in such a man’s heart – Defeat? Honor? Bitterness? Loss? What could have driven a good man to forsake his country and fight for a new one founded on terrible injustice? Could he ever find peace? Would he ever have a true home again?
The search for the answers to those questions became the heart of my first novel, the Orange Rose Award finalist TERMS OF SURRENDER. Its theme is the healing power of love in the confusing and bitter aftermath of the War Between the States.
If you are a parent how does being a parent affect your writing and writing habits? Or does it?
I believe I couldn’t write a novel that didn’t have kids and animals in it. I’ve loved both all my life, and while being a veterinarian didn’t turn out to be a practical choice for me (apparently they have to do more than pet kittens and ride horses all day), teaching did – and fortunately, I love it. I have three grown kids (Jenn, Alison, and Chris) and 3 grandkids (Christian, Connor, and Evie), who range in age from 6 months to 12 years. We all live either in the same house or very nearby. Oh, and between us there are 5 dogs, 6 cats, and a tank full of fish.
Who is your favorite author and why?
Narrowing this down to one is impossible for me, but I can mention some of my favorites:
Harper Lee – because MOCKINGBIRD is just about the most brilliant and moving book I’ve ever read.
Nora Roberts (especially as J.D. Robb) – Nobody writes better dialog, and she has a great sense of humor.
Stephen King – Because I love spooky stories and nobody tops him. In fact, one of my poor kids nearly perished in infancy because, after reading SALEM’S LOT at bedtime one night, I was too scared to go downstairs in the dark to get the baby’s bottle. (Fortunately, my stalwart husband manned up and braved the unseen horrors lurking on the stairs and in the kitchen, thus saving the baby from starvation!)
Robert B. Parker – For his wonderful characters, plots, and economy of writing. And he was also a genius at dialogue.
Elizabeth Lowell and Linda Howard – The two writers who introduced me to the best of romance: heart-pounding, pulse-racing, page-turning, incredibly satisfying literature.
And an author who was new to me a few months ago and is now among my favorites: Alex Cord – For his ability to put his heart and imagination on the page in a unique language that is at once honest, poetic, and straightforward. He has the soul of a cowboy and the imagination of a dreamer.
What do you hope to accomplish with your writing?
I hope people will experience the same excitement, joy, suspense, thrill, and powerful emotion in reading my stories that I felt in writing them.
Traditional or Self publishing? Why?
Self-publishing, not only for its financial and independence benefits, but because I quickly grew disillusioned with editors who seemed interested only in the shallowest of formula writing. (One actually told me she didn’t “get” what the Civil War had to do with the West during the mid-to-late 1800s. Another editor wanted me to make a sociopathic character “nicer.” It’s not that I don’t appreciate constructive criticism, but – seriously?)
Talk about your journey into the wide world of publishing
Well, it’s definitely been a learning curve! (And I’m still learning!) I think the hardest thing for an author to do is self-promote and self-publicize. By nature, most writers tend to live a good deal inside their heads. It’s been very, very helpful to talk with other writers, to have their advice and support. There are now so many opportunities through social media and other online sources to connect with other writers and with readers. And I plan by next year to start attending conventions and conferences.
Tell us about your book (s)
I’m the author of six published novels. TERMS OF SURRENDER, a Civil War/Western historical romance, is the first of a trilogy of novels following the same family from the 1860s through the early 20th century. The succeeding books are TERMS OF ENGAGEMENT and TERMS OF TEMPTATION. I’ve also written two contemporary romantic suspense novels – DANGEROUS and THE GUARDIAN’S ANGEL – and a romantic time-travel/alternate universe adventure, TIMELAPSE. All my books have at least a touch – and sometimes much more – of the paranormal. (Not werewolves, zombies, or vampires, but rather such things as time-travel, telepathy, and angels.)
What inspired you to write these books (or in this genre)?
My favorite movies, TV shows, and books have always been either love stories, Westerns, or scifi/spooky stuff. I’ve probably seen every TWILIGHT ZONE episode about 20 times. (Heck, I can do the dialogue: “TO SERVE MAN – it’s a cookbook!!!!!”) And there’s nothing so uniquely American as Westerns. Who wouldn’t want to climb aboard a Stagecoach, dance with wolves, or holler after Shane to come back?
Tell us why we should love or hate your main character?
I’d like to quote a review on Amazon from LaylaReader, because she explained so eloquently why she loved the two main characters from TERMS OF SURRENDER – an embittered former Rebel cavalryman, and a stubborn, feisty young woman desperate to hang on to her land:
“In addition to the dangers that threaten them, the characters face their inner nightmares and the memories that imprison them, especially Michael. The love that develops between Annie and Michael is tender and touching, a healing force that drives away the pain of the past. (Annie’s little brother) Robbie is also a great character, helping to fill the huge void in Michael after the loss of his own young brother Gavin on the battlefield.”
Do(es) your book(s) have a soundtrack?
If you mean is there music that ought to accompany the story? – then I’d have to say I’d play the “Gettysburg” and “How the West Was Won” soundtracks over the TERMS trilogy. If you meant, are any of the books audiobooks? – then yes, TERMS OF SURRENDER and TERMS OF ENGAGEMENT are available as audiobooks, read by the wonderful voice artist/actor Keith Tracton. TIMELAPSE is currently in production as an audiobook.

OFFICIAL RELEASE!!! Three Little Words
Embarrassing Crushes
By Susan Mallery
With more than 25 million books sold worldwide, New York Times bestselling author Susan Mallery is known for creating characters who feel as real as the folks next door, and for putting them into emotional, often funny situations readers recognize from their own lives. Susan’s books have made Booklist’s Top 10 Romances list in four out of five consecutive years. RT Book Reviews says, “When it comes to heartfelt contemporary romance, Mallery is in a class by herself.” With her popular, ongoing Fool’s Gold series, Susan has reached new heights on the bestsellers lists and has won the hearts of countless new fans.
Susan grew up in southern California, moved so many times that her friends stopped writing her address in pen, and now has settled in Seattle with her husband and the most delightfully spoiled little dog who ever lived. Visit Susan online at www.SusanMallery.com .
Here’s a video in which Susan chats about Ford Hendrix of THREE LITTLE WORDS:
When I was younger, I had a deep and abiding love for a celebrity who shall remain nameless. I wasn’t the kind of girl to hang his picture in my locker or cover my room with his posters – ours was a private love. I grew up in LA, and my dad worked in TV, so I was convinced that my one true love and I would one day meet. And when we did, I didn’t want him to think that I was like the millions of silly girls who had a crush on him. They didn’t know him. I did. My love was real, and as soon as we met, he would recognize me as his soulmate.
Back then, I didn’t tell anyone how I felt because our love was sacred. Today, I still won’t confess his name because, frankly, I’m embarrassed. What was I thinking?! He wasn’t very smart, only marginally cute, and he ran like a girl. (There’s your one hint – he was on a TV show that required running. And he had dark hair. Two hints, but that’s it.)
In THREE LITTLE WORDS, my latest Fool’s Gold romance, Isabel Beebe knows all about embarrassing crushes, though hers wasn’t on a celebrity. When Isabel was 14, she had a crush on Ford Hendrix, her sister’s then-fiancé. Worse, Ford knew how she felt because when her sister broke up with him, Isabel chased after him, sobbing, begging him not to leave. And when he joined the Navy, she wrote him dozens of long, impassioned letters.
Over the years, her letters became less like teenage love letters and more like a “Dear Diary” kind of thing, but that brings its own special twist of humiliation. Because now Ford is back in Fool’s Gold to open a bodyguard-training facility, and this dangerously sexy ex-Navy SEAL knows all her most embarrassing secrets. He knows about her first kiss. He knows when she lost her virginity and where (*cough* inthebackofatruck *cough*).
All summer, Isabel has been ducking around corners to hide from Ford, but as THREE LITTLE WORDS begins, she’s decided that enough is enough. Fool’s Gold is too small for her to avoid him forever, especially since he just rented the place next door.
Enter the THREE LITTLE WORDS blog tour contest once a day every day from July 30 through August 11 for a chance to win a $25 Amazon or BN.com gift card! And because this blog was set up by Fool’s Gold Cheerleader Allyson Brann, if you win, she’ll win a gift card, too!

Blog Highlight: Lynn Hardy’s Official Blog
Lynn blogs about Indie publishing and posts snippets of stories! (I just love her layout by the way!)
A bit about Ms. Hardy:
Led by a series of dreams and encouraged by friends, I began the journey to become an author. I stored my work in a computer file labeled “second job.” Writing began as a passion I could not contain and has become much more than I ever expected.
Prophecy of the Flame – Book One became #1 on Amazon Kindle in 2010, shortly after Book Two released. There has been talk of a movie: I finished a rough of the screenplay for Book One in 2012.
I have attended many science fiction conventions and have had the privilege of serving on panels about writing. Renaissance fairs are another favorite event. Seeing others dressed in costume (as I always am during book signings) makes me feel right at home.
Really, though, I am just a stay-at-home mother of two. The road has been longer and more complicated than I would have ever guessed–not always smooth, but filled with wonderful surprises. Like most stories, I am sure that the journey has only just begun.

Q & A with Rhiannon Paille
Today is a personal friend of mine and another Canadian! Please give a warm welcome to Rhiannon Paille!
*****
My bio says: Rhiannon writes about things that were lost and while most of her books are fictional you can be sure that her characters are not—fictional that is. She has a PhD in Metaphysical Science and is a world renowned Metaphysical Therapist. When she’s not writing books she’s reading minds, singing karaoke, burning dinner and sipping iced cappuccino despite her allergy to coffee. Some day she’d like to own a unicorn—as long as it doesn’t eat her.
When did you start writing and why?
I began writing when I was eleven, on the day I got kicked out of English class because they couldn’t teach me anything I didn’t know. I had to go to library with three other class mates to do “creative writing” I wrote a few short stories, stopped when I hit ninth grade and life got really weird. I picked it back up around twenty when I had a story to tell.
If you are a parent how does being a parent affect your writing and writing habits? Or does it?
Being a parent is great. My kids want to read my books but they’re too young for them. It’s a juggling act, but my kids have learned to be pretty independent.
Who is your favorite author and why?
It’s hard to name just one, and nope my mind is blank I can’t name just one. Erin Morgenstern, Cassandra Clare, Julie Kagawa, Maggie Stiefvater, Kelley Armstrong.
What do you hope to accomplish with your writing?
World domination.
Traditional or Self publishing? Why?
Self publishing because nobody in traditional publishing wants to work with me right now. It reminds me of baseball, I was that girl that was always picked last for teams because I couldn’t hit a ball to save my life. So I mean you’d keep pitching them at me, and half the time I’d duck out of the way, or swing and miss. Of course though like every underdog there was that one time I DID hit the ball, while few and far between it was a home run.
Talk about your journey into the wide world of publishing
*falls on face* *falls on face again* *stands on wobbly legs* *fist bumps some other authors* *gracefully throws small press publishing deal in the garbage* *organizes lit fest* *self pubs fantasy series* *gets twelve thousand downloads in less than six months* *wonders how that happened* *ends up in the bathroom crying* *has another panic attack* *finishes writing a six book series* *finds out the hard way she’s allergic to coffee* *breaks out in hives*
Yeah, something like that.
Tell us about your book (s)
Integrated Intuition is a psychic development book that I wrote by accident because I got sick of repeating myself. It’s non-fiction.
The Ferryman + The Flame is a tragic love story centered around characters that are their own worst enemies. Kaliel was warned about her love for Krishani, the Ferryman. One day he will marry the land and leave Avristar forever. Kaliel doesn’t listen and because she’s a Flame, one of nine apocalyptic weapons, she sparks a war. Desperate to save her home and her love, she attempts to awaken Avred, the male spirit of the land, not knowing to do so may cost her the ultimate sacrifice.
What inspired you to write these books (or in this genre)?
I didn’t have a choice in writing The Ferryman + The Flame series. I was either going to write it or go insane from the characters attacking me. They were very persuasive.
Tell us why we should love or hate your main character?
I have two main characters, and I love them both. Kaliel I love because of her bravery and the wonder about her. Krishani I love because of his stoic nature and his sexiness.
I hate them both for what they put me through in writing their story, but then, I’m almost certain they hate themselves for some parts of that story, wow. Definitely not your everyday storyline.
Do(es) your book(s) have a soundtrack?
Maybe . . .
Surrender by Billy Talent
Caught Myself by Paramore
That’s what you get by Paramore
Breathing by Wires by The Juliana Theory
No Light, No Light by Florence + The Machine

BLOG TOUR: The Haunting Season
The Blurb:
Be careful what you let in…
Siler House has stood silent beneath Savannah’s moss-draped oaks for decades. Notoriously haunted, it has remained empty until college-bound Jess Perry and three of her peers gather to take part in a month-long study on the paranormal. Jess, who talks to ghosts, quickly bonds with her fellow test subjects. One is a girl possessed. Another just wants to forget. The third is a guy who really knows how to turn up the August heat, not to mention Jess’s heart rate…when he’s not resurrecting the dead. The study soon turns into something far more sinister when they discover that Siler House and the dark forces within are determined to keep them forever. In order to escape, Jess and the others will have to open themselves up to the true horror of Siler House and channel the very evil that has welcomed them
The Excerpt:
It was only when the crickets and frogs stopped that Jess awoke. She blinked, trying to adjust her eyes to the dark. She turned back over, expecting Allison to be either still sitting up, or asleep. But her bed was empty and Allison stood in front of the dresser, hands at her sides, staring at the mirror. Alarmed, Jess sat upright.
“It’s happening again,” Allison said.
“Huh?”
“The spirits. They’re back. I can see them.”
Jess rubbed her eyes as a spark of uncertainty and a moment’s worth of fear rustled somewhere deep inside her. “They’re there, in the mirror?”
“Yes.”
Jess got out of bed and tentatively stood next to Allison. She looked at the mirror, then behind her. Nothing. Uncertainty gave way to disappointment. The mirror cast back only the shadowy figures of Allison and herself, their faces made pale by the moonlight streaming into the room. They were alone, as far as Jess could tell.
Damn it! Why couldn’t she see the ghosts? Were they here? Disappointment gave way to a pang of envy.
“You don’t seem as upset as you were before,” Jess said. “If they’re back, aren’t you afraid they’ll take over? Possess you?” She wasn’t making fun of Allison. Something horrible had happened to her, and she was probably more sensitive to the supernatural than Jess was.
“Yes, I’m afraid,” Allison replied calmly.
The way Allison spoke seemed at odds with her words. The hairs on Jess’s arms tingled, but not because of any ghosts she couldn’t see. Right now, the only thing creepy in the room was Allison. The girl had been possessed, after all.
Allison turned her head to look at Jess, her expression unreadable in the shadows, even this close up. “He collects souls.”
Jess peered harder into the mirror, trying not to show Allison she was indeed afraid. “He? Who are you talking about?”
“He’s looking at you. I can’t make out what he’s saying. But see?” she pointed to the mirror. “He wrote his name.”
Fear and a healthy dose of agitation rose inside Jess. Fear, because someone staring at them from inside a mirror was downright scary. Agitated, because she couldn’t see anything, and Allison’s continual freak-outs were wearing on her. After a long day getting here, she was exhausted and just wanted to sleep.
“Allison, I don’t see anything! He? Who are you talking about?”
“Riley,” Allison whispered.
“Riley? Who’s Riley?”
Allison stood just as still as she had upon Jess’s wakening. “He lives here. With the others.”
“Others?” Jess stepped closer to the mirror, leaning against the dresser to get a better look. Her breath fogged it enough to reveal a single name, written backward: Riley.
