Sincerely Me…

sinsundaySo I thought since I have interviewed hundreds of authors over the years on this blog, that you would enjoy hearing me answer some of the questions I have posed to them over the years.

Each week I will answer one or two questions, if you want you can leave your own questions for me in the comments and I will try and answer them in a future blog post!

***** ***** ***** ***** ***** *****

What are your ambitions for your writing career?

For this year I am hoping to make my books more widely available. I have pulled my eBooks out of Kindle Unlimited so that I can make them available in Kobo, iTunes and Google Books formats. I’ll be letting my readers know about that once they are available across all platforms.

I also am working towards finding a good distribution channel for paperbacks and hoping to have my books into some brick and mortar stores by the end of 2016.  So keep your eyes peeled!

As for my career on a whole I hope to keep putting out four to five books a year across the two genres. I will be continuing the Stan Brookshire series indefinitely, I have a special off shoot trilogy of the Stan Brookshire series lined up to kick off in October of this year and have a few different romantic suspense series lined up once I finish Den of Thieves.

Lots of fun planned for years to come.

q & a

Give a cold dead body welcome to the wonderful E.G. Weeks as our first guest on the blog for 2016!

What were you like at school?

In college I was a bit more outgoing than I was in high school. But, still, I would probably be classified by today’s standards as an introvert.

Were you good at English?

I was always a very good student and English is no exception.

What are your ambitions for your writing career?

I write because I like to write and bring life to the characters of my imagination. I would also like to see these characters brought to life on the screen.

So, what have you written? 12442840_509508142554245_520835012_n

I currently have three books in the Tatiana series which is erotic romance (ero/rom); two novellas in the Where We Left Off series, a sweet romance (sweetrom) interracial, bwwm with another book in the works; and a romcom short story titled Girl Talk.

Where can we buy or see them?

All my books are currently in ebook format and available on Amazon.

Give us an insight into your main character. What does he/she do that is so special?

Tatiana series

In the Tatiana series the main character, Tatiana Kimball, is a forty something woman who is recently divorced and ready to redefine herself and explore the unknown in terms of her career, her health and body image and her sexuality. The debut novel, Tatiana’s Chance, introduces us to a cast of characters who are Facebook friends meeting through various “chance” encounters; some of those “encounters” are steamier than others! You won’t be disappointed at all! In fact, you’ll want to come back for the second book, Tatiana’s Choice, for some grown and sexy action and adventure that will set you on fire in Negril, Jamaica! The third book, Tatiana’s Charms, has our favorite diva finally making some personal decisions about the men in her life and more importantly, about herself. She lets go of all her inhibitions and is able to experience something for which she has searched a long time.

12459863_509508175887575_340508142_nWhere We Left Off series

Going Home – Khloe Winston finally returns to her childhood town to visit her parents for Thanksgiving. It has been years since she has been home. She took the week off from work and made the trip by car from Old Palm Harbor, Florida to Long Island, New York. She would, of course, run into Paul Whittington, her high school prom date and backyard neighbor. Paul had returned home after serving in the Navy and never left home again. He also never got around to finding a wife. In the second book, Moving Home – Now that the Christmas holidays are here Khloe has the opportunity to have some serious discussions with her mother about her relationship with Paul, spend time with family and friends, and observe the holiday traditions when her entire family returns home to be with each other for Christmas. They also reveal a secret Paul has been keeping, which will rock Khloe to her very core.

What are you working on at the minute?

I am currently working on several projects, the third book in the WWLO series, which will be titled, Welcome Home. I am not sure how this part of Paul and Khloe’s story will flesh out but I will let the characters tell their story through me as usual. I am also working on a collaborative urban fiction with an extremely talented author who is sharing his knowledge as a seasoned author. The third project I am working on is in its initial stages so I am not at liberty to discuss the details but there is a huge learning curve for me so it’s on my long terms goals list at the moment.

What genre are your books?

My main genre is romance. But my subgenres include erotica, sweet romance, multicultural, poetry and inspiration.

What draws you to this genre?12459584_509508155887577_1715888742_n

I am a romantic at heart. Yes, the sappy, sweet, “get a room” kind of romance that people laugh about but cannot help but be drawn to. I also use inspiration as a way of reaching people where they are to let them know they are normal, just like everyone else and that their situation is only temporary. I also use inspirational writing to remind myself of the very same things.

Which actor/actress would you like to see playing the lead character from your most recent book?

My first thoughts for Tatiana would be Nia Long, Gabrielle Union, Sanaa Lathan or Queen Latifah. In the same series, I would absolutely love to see Shemar Moore or Micheal Ealy play Rodney and Idris Elba play Shonn while Terrence Howard or Morris Chestnut play the part of Quan. You can see that I’ve given much thought to this!

For Khloe, Keri Washington or Gina Ravera might be a good match and for Paul I like thought of either Tony Goldwyn, Simon Baker or Chris Pine.

What12464038_509508125887580_1098595411_n do you think of “trailers” for books?

I absolutely love book trailers! I had one done for my first book that was just ok

ay, but I make a trailer for my third book, Tatiana’s Charms, that I think turned out pretty good. Please take a look at it! https://youtu.be/p8JA-wfj4bs

How do you relax?

I watch tv or listen to music to relax, usually with a glass or sweet tea or red wine. I also enjoy watching the night sky. Something about the stars and moon is just so soothing.

Is there anything else you would like to add that I haven’t included?

I often get messages from people who want to know why I write, “that naughty stuff” as they say, and I usually smile and take a moment to laugh with them. They I get very serious and respond to them with questions of my own like, “Have you ever had sex? Ever been in love? Have you ever had your heart broken or felt like you weren’t getting what you needed out of your marriage or relationship? Have you ever felt old and past the stage of usefulness?” They usually try to laugh but I cut them off with, “that’s 12476041_509508189220907_233463307_nreal life, so is starting over at 45, 50, or 60. So are the emotions of being an empty nester or surviving your spouse.” People are quick to think these topics are private and only for “the people” going through those things, but WE ARE those people and our day will come when we do go through some major life changes.

I am here to share with people my own age with a message that says that life is not over at some magical number. We do not have to be relegated to the porch rocking chair or the senior center just because we get our AARP cards in the mail. Being old is a state of mind but being bold is also a state of mind.

WIP Wednesdays: Bodyguard

11846366_10156102945675556_1524682838_n

Hi Everyone! After a whole lot of set backs and just general losing my mojo (The muse can be incredibly stubborn sometimes!) I am back to the writing cave to finish the long awaited second book in the Den of Thieves series, Bodyguard! Here’s a sneak peak at whats coming up!

*****

The sun was shining and the birds were churping. Olivia was having brunch at her local cafe just like she did every Saturday morning. She liked sitting on the patio in the warmer months watching the people come and go. It was a nice break from her hectic everyday as a county prosecutor.

She took a sip of her coffee just as tires screeched. Olivias head snapped up in the direction the sound came from. A dark black sedan had just finished turning the corner at the end of her street.

It picked up speed as it shot down the road towards where she was sitting on her front porch.

Then just as suddenly as it had started racing towards her it started slowing down.

The next few seconds happened in slow motion. The passenger window rolled down and a the muzzle of a gun appeared.

Seconds passed by as if they were hours. In nightmarish slow motion she watched the flash of gun going off, heard the pop-pop as it fired a seond time and felt the air whoosh by as the bullets passed by her.

Someone was shooting at her!

Olivias breath caught in her chest as she dove off of her chair to the ground as the pop-pop continued.

The bullets whized by her head striking the chair where she sat. They didnt stop. They just kept coming.

Pop.

Pop.

The last one found its target. Her left shoulder felt like she had been punched. She gasped in the air that had been knocked out of her and screamed.

The fire engulfed her shoulder and shot down the side of her body. She laid down as close to the ground as she could and whimpered. She could hear sirens in the background.

One of the men yelled something to the other and the car suddenly picked up speed and shot off down the road.

She didnt move. She couldnt. The pain in her shoulder was so bad she could barely catch a breath. She laid there on the ground watching the pool of blood slowly growing beside her.

She listened to the sirens getting closer and prayed they would make it in time. She didnt want to die. Not like this. It hurt too much.

Bright lights flashed. Red and Blue. She closed her eyes. She was tired and the pain was getting too much.

“Over here! We have one down!” a womans voice called out.

She could feel hands on her. She was so tired.

She closed her eyes.

“Stay with me. Stay with me.” She could hear the woman’s voice but it sounded so far away.

She tried to open her eyes. They were so heavy she didn’t have the strength.

“Ma’am? Can you hear me? Ma’am–” the bodiless voice got further and further away with each word.

Then her world faded to black.

Teaser Tuesdays: The Widowmaker

teaser tuesday.jpg

This month for Teaser Tuesdays I am going to be giving you bits and pieces out of my upcoming new release, The Widowmaker, the fifth installment of the Stan Brookshire series.

Here is your first taste! Enjoy!

*****

She looked so lovely walking down the aisle. He looked so handsome. They were picture perfect together: the blushing bride with her groom.

It should have been him up there. He did not deserve her. She was his. She would always be his.

Focus. His mind reeled. He knew that he had to keep a grip on reality. He was here for a purpose. He had a job to do.

But he couldn’t help but think about the fact that he should be the one standing there beside her, not the groom.

It should have never ended up this way. They’d had a fairy tale romance. They had been made for each other. They had grown up together, had been high school sweethearts. Everyone had thought that they were going to be the one couple that made it through the long haul.

So when they had decided to get married half way though their college years, there had been a cheer from the residents in their small hometown. Their Golden Boy was marrying The Golden Girl.

It was a bright spring day that they had chosen to get married. The weather had been perfect. The sun had been shining, a light breeze ruffled the leaves in the trees and there wasn’t a dark cloud in the sky.

Almost everyone in their small town had shown up. The tiny church had been packed to standing room only. Everyone had been smiling.

He remembered looking down at his watch, standing beside the priest at the altar, and seeing that there were only a few more minutes left before his beautiful bride walked down the aisle and he married her.

They had even decided to write their own vows. They would have the conventional ones in there to appease the rest of their family but they’d had their own things that they had wanted to say to each other. And he had spent the last of those minutes of waiting going over the words that he had prepared for her.

He remembered the door at the back of the church opening. He remembered the look on her father’s face as he walked down the aisle.

Alone.

He remembered the feeling in his chest. The constricted way his lungs seemed to close up on him. He remembered feeling the way his head spun and he had almost passed out when he heard the words that her father had spoken to him.

“She is not coming.”

They all had tried to soothe his pain, but in that moment, his heart had shattered on the floor of the church and there was nothing that any of them would ever be able to do to put it back together again.

From the bits and pieces his broken mind had gathered, she had found someone else. She had met the other man many months before. Apparently what she’d never told him was that she’d had doubts about marrying him since she’d met this other man.

She told her father that she believed that she was doing the right thing; that she did not want to marry someone if she wasn’t positive it was love.

It did not make sense to a lot of the people there that day. And it most certainly had not made any sense to him either. It had done little to stop the bleeding in his soul and soothe the ache in his broken heart.

He had left the church in the arms of his mother. The one woman he had always been able to count on through thick and thin. There had never been a doubt about her and her loyalty to him. His father had left his mother when he was just a toddler. When his father walked out on stormy night, she had turned all her love and devotion on her little boy and had sacrificed everything she had had in order to give him the best that life had to offer.

She was the one that he could count on and from the moment that thought had come to him he decided that he would never love again. He followed his mother in her beliefs that God had done this for a reason. He soon believed that there was a higher purpose to his life and that was the reason. He went to church every day and prayed for the knowledge and the guidance to know the path that he was to take. He prayed to know God’s will and to understand the reasons for the way that things went in his life.

And as he prayed the answers became clear. He was to become a member of God’s house and to teach the world His words. He was to transform from just a simple member of the congregation to a teacher of the congregation. He was to become a priest.

When he told his mother of God’s wishes, she had become elated that God had chosen her son to lead the church and had supported him in any way he had needed, just as he had known she would. She had bought him his airplane ticket to the seminary school and had carefully packed his bags for him.

At the airport she had hugged him fiercely as he prepared to board the plane and she’d been there waiting for him when he disembarked years later as a priest. He had decided that he would be the one to take over for the priest that was leaving the church that had had gone to as a child. It was something that he knew that he knew would make his mother very proud.

Coming back into the present, he realized that what had seemed like an hour lost in his own memories was only a few precious moments in reality and that the bride had just barely made it up the isle to stand before him at the altar.

At least she made it to his side.

Pushing back his thoughts as he stared at the woman, he couldn’t help but notice how much she looked like the woman he was supposed to have married. Her hair was long and blonde, with a slight wave to it. Just as his bride’s had been all those years ago.

He started the ceremony just at that moment, trying to push out the thoughts that were running through his head.

They had their own vows to say. Just like he had had so many years ago.

His chest was starting to tighten as he pushed onward through the prayers, the hymns. He had to get out of there or he was going to pass out right there at the altar.

Oh, dear God! She looks so much like the woman who was to be mine! His mind screamed at him as he spoke about the vows that they had undertaken: the vows of holy matrimony and the sanctity of marriage.

And then it was over.

“And you may now kiss the bride.” His voice cracked as he spoke. He reached for the glass of water that had been brought up for this very reason, and he drank it down in a matter of a few seconds. It still did not do any good to cool the waves of emotions that washed over him like tidal waves in the grips of a tropical storm.

As the new couple walked back down the isle hand in hand, smiling and waving at everyone they passed, he took it as his chance to leave. As he passed one of the sisters in the hallway, he instructed, “Please tell them that I am not well and please see to it that no one disturbs me.”

She nodded, “Yes, Father. Is everything alright? You look like you have seen a ghost.”

“I will be fine. I just need to rest and to think on things for now. Thank you for seeing to the things that I have asked.”

And without another word, he turned and walked the rest of the way down the hall to the sanctuary of his rooms, shutting the world around him out as he closed the door behind him.

What were you like at school?

I wasn’t studious but I got decent grades without cracking a book, but my heart wasn’t in it. I was however was blessed with one amazing teacher, who by a stroke of luck was my teacher for two years in a row. She was my grade 11 and 12 English teacher. She was the one teacher who knew I wasn’t living up to my potential and was the only one to stand there and force me to push harder. She wouldn’t hand me grades in any way. No I worked hard for everyone that I got but never got an A.

I will never forget the last essay I did for her. I spent hours on it. I put every effort into it. When I got that last paper back from her on the top the following words were written…

“You finally got it….  A”

Now every word I commit to paper is as equally thought out, equally researched, and equally prepared as it was for that last essay because she pushed me to live up to my potential.

Q & A with Eden Bradley

q & a

Give a warm welcome to the lovely Eden Bradley!

*****

Eden close up sable 400x550Were you good at English?

I was taught to read when I was 3 ½, and come from a family of big readers, so yes, English/reading/writing were always easy and fun for me. In college I always said I’d rather write every school paper in Shakespearean iambic pentameter than take a single math class! Ugh!

Which writers inspire you?

My biggest influences have not been romance authors, for the most part. I’m an old hard-core sci-fi fan, and was very heavily influenced by Tanith Lee (her book Silver Metal Lover is one of the best books ever written, IMO). Robert Heinlein’s character development and the way in which he handled relationships and personal interactions was, I discovered through his work, what sucked me into a book, something I’ve tried to emulate. And Anne Rice has had an enormous influence on my writing voice-the texture and mood and cadence. But my bestie author R.G. Alexander has held my hand through countless books, has taught me to write better dialogue, and our conversations have set off numerous plot bunnies! Those bunnies do multiply!

So, what have you written?

I’ve published over 40 novels, novellas and short stories, and even a little poetry. My most well-known book is probably my bestselling novel, THE DARK GARDEN, a BDSM romance published in 2007. But I hit the New York Times and USA Today bestseller lists with my novella OBSESSION, when it was first published as part of the Riding Desire Box Set.

My books have won the Passionate Plume Award, the Golden Quill, and the Holt Medallion, and have been nominated for the Golden Flogger Award and an EPPIE, as well as hitting numerous “Best Of” lists.

I’ve also published a number of articles on writing, with emphasis on using the five senses, love scenes and kink. I’m published in ten languages (as both Eden Bradley and Eve Berlin) so you can find my books all over the world. You can see a full list of my books and find most of the buy links on my website: http://www.EdenBradley.com

What are you working on at the minute?

Right now I’m finishing up two books. DANGEROUSLY BAD is an edgy and very romantic BDSM-themed romance, Book Three in my Dangerous

Romance series for Berkley Heat (Book One DANGEROUSLY BOUND and Book 1.5 DANGEROUSLY INKED are available now, and Book Two DANGEROUSLY BROKEN was just released). This series is set in New Orleans, one of my favorite cities in the world, and I feel the series has only gotten better after my second visit there last year. The characters from the other books in the series make an appearance, which is fun for me and my readers! The otGirl-400x600her work-in-progress is THE TRAINING HOUSE: BOY, Book Two in that series. I’m really trying to focus on DANGEROUSLY BAD, but this book wakes me up in the middle of the night, and I’m on my computer furiously typing notes and bits of dialogue at 3 AM. This is a very hard-core BDSM series, and it’s erotica, not erotic romance, so I always try to issue appropriate warnings. Readers are loving Book One, THE TRAINING HOUSE: GIRL, and I hope I meet their expectations with the second book.

What genre are your books?

I write mostly contemporary erotic romance and some ‘literary’ erotica, with my main focus being on kink throughout most (but not all) of my books. I also have a vampire series (my Midnight Playground series) set in 2069 Europe, and have done a post-apocalyptic novella (THE BREEDER) as part of the multi-author ‘Wasteland’ series from Samhain.

What draws you to this genre?

I was a psychology major, and the complexities of the human mind are always fascinating to me. I believe those intimate moments are when we’re the most vulnerable—all our hopes and fears come out when we’re naked with someone, whether the sex is a one-night stand or a more romantic connection, but particularly if it’s a romance. Writing sex gives me so much more to explore with my characters. That sounded dirty, didn’t it? ; )

Writing kink comes naturally to me since I’ve been involved with BDSM for much of my adult life. I like to bring a more realistic perspective to BDSM romance. I’m doing more and more education on sexual positivity for women, as well as about kink practice, so it might be a bit of a mission for me to get true, safe information out there. Plus, let’s face it, writing kinky sex is fun! But, that said, if ‘fun’ were the only reason it would quickly lose its appeal—for me, there has to be a deeper reason. Because chocolate chip cookies are fun, too, but chocolate chip cookies three times a day aren’t so much fun anymore (and yes, I may be using chocolate chip cookies as my analogy after having overdosed on them about an hour ago!). So, let’s use sex instead. Sex three times day wouldn’t be any fun, either. Wait. Gah! Apparently I am terrible at analogies!

How much research do you do?

On my kink books? Well, if you count thirty years as a lot of research…lol! But I actually do quite a bit of kink research because no one can know everything. For my book DANGEROUSLY BOUND (Book One in my Dangerous Romance series) my friend author Sidney Bristol came over and got down on my office floor to help me figure out if a particular hogtie position was feasible (she knows more about rope bondage than I do). But maybe some of my favorite research for that series was on the city of New Orleans, which I did partly online and partly in person (amazing, magical city!). I really love to find out everything I can when writing about a place I haven’t spent much time in. I can get totally lost in research, coming up for air hours—or days—later.

Do you write full-time or part-time?

I’m a full-time author and have been for the last 11 years, with a two-year stint teaching Pilates in addition to writing when the economy was dragging. I’ve been very lucky! I get to spend my work day in my pajamas and fuzzy slippers, which is pretty awesome. The isolation can be difficult for me, but my dog Voodoo keeps me company.

Where do the your ideas come from?

From everywhere! I’ve written about past relationships, or bits and pieces of them, anyway, although three of the guys would definitely recognize themselves if they read the books. Music is also a huge inspiration—a song can set a mood or inspire a character. I have specific playlists for each book, and am always looking for new music. I love when the music and the moment in the book totally align and I’m just sort of dancing in my chair as I type. This is why I don’t need to drink. ;)

dangerously broken_front mech.inddWhat’s your views on social media for marketing?

I think in this day and age social media is crucial. It’s what’s brought the world together, making a true global community. I can talk to readers in Canada, England, Brazil, Japan. And I believe we *have* to talk to our readers. I think they want to get to know us, and I want to get to know them. I love interacting with them, hearing who their favorite heroes are, discussing the things we have in common. It’s not only important as a marketing strategy, but being a very social person, it’s crucial to my survival and helps feed my creativity. The one thing I don’t like about writing full-time is the isolation. And some of my closest friends started as my readers, which is a pretty amazing thing.

Which social network worked best for you?

Right now I’m very into Twitter and Pinterest, but Facebook—especially my blog group’s private group, the Smutketeers Brass Chattery—has been a great way to connect with readers and just have fun!

How do you relax?

Truthfully? I sit in bed with my dog, Voodoo, and watch bad reality TV. Sad but true-lol! That’s how I unwind. But I also love to play Cards Against Humanity with friends, go to lunch, get pedicures with my God daughter, take my dog hiking in the woods, and getting back to Pilates has been really helpful.

What is your favourite motivational phrase.

“Don’t dream it, be it.” It’s a quote from Rocky Horror Picture Show, and it’s tattooed in Tibetan calligraphy down my right side. : )

Is there anything else you would like to add that I haven’t included?

I’m a founding member of the blog group the Smutketeers, along with authors R.G. Alexander and Robin L. Rotham. We have tons of guest authors, huge themed events (like our annual BDSM-A-Palooza and Para-Palooza, and our HUGE 12 Days of X-mas), we do costumed steampunk photo shoots every couple of years, and at the last RT Booklover’s Convention we took 90 readers and authors to see the opening night of Pitch Perfect 2 at a dinner theater—we always have something exciting up our sleeves! Right now I’m working on an amazing event with my fellow Smutketeers –we’re throwing one of the evening balls at the RT Booklover’s Convention in Las Vegas next year, and it will be nothing short of spectacular! The Cirque du Punk Ball will be steampunk/dieselpunk/cyberpunk themed, with circus acts, a DJ, a midway full of carnival games, and a live video and Twitter feed so fans and friends who can’t make the convention can still participate and win prizes. You can find that page here: https://www.facebook.com/groups/1637558226510632/ And you can read more about the event and meet all 22 Patrons of the Cirque Guild (an amazing group of authors!) in the December issue of RT Magazine.

Our fans always get the first scoop on our activities, books and special giveaways in our private Facebook group, the Smutketeers Brass Chattery—join us there or come see us in Las Vegas! And check my website, my Facebook pages and my Twitter feed for my upcoming live and online appearances.

Q & A with Tiana Nicole

q & a

Please give a warm welcome to the lovely Tiana Nicole, our guest on the blog this week!

*****

Which writers inspire you?

The list is extremely long and almost impossible to narrow down. The very first novel that I read inspired me so much that I re-read the book five times. I loved the story just that much, and since that moment I would have to say Terry McMillian expires me the most. I’m also inspired by authors like Eric Jerome Dickey, Terri Woods, Mary Monroe, Mary B. Morrison just to name a couple.

So, what have you written?

I released My debut novel Deceitful Temptations January 2015 under my own imprint Triple Pearl Productions. My sophomore novel titled the Sacred Bond of Matrimony was released January 2015, along-side my debut novel Deceitful Temptations. I decided not to stop there by releasing my Junior novel titled Vengeance is Sweeter than Khandy in February 2015. I’m looking to publish three more novels by the end of the year along with a magazine publication, so I’m definitely keeping myself busy.

Where can we buy or see them?

Busy Any of my novels can be located on Amazon, Barnes & Noble, my website http://www.tiananicole.org, Books-A-million, and a wide array of other online retailers who distributes books.

Give us an insight into your main character. What does he/she do that is so special?

Bus The novel that I fell in love with along with the readers would be my debut novel Deceitful Temptations. My favorite part to write was the ending due to my loving the idea of Charmaine coming into her own identity and finally saying enough is enough, and I can no longer mask my pain in exchange for the price of fame and notoriety.

What are you working on at the minute?

At the moment I’m working on three upcoming novels, with one being non-fiction titled You’re Not the Boss of Me. The other two novels I’m working on would be What’s Done After Sunset, and Forsaken Matrimony.

What genre are your books?

I write Contemporary Romance, and I also write Self-help non-fiction, because I love the idea of bridging the gap between perception and reality.

What draws you to this genre?

My favorite part to write was the ending due to my loving the idea of Charmaine coming into her own identity and finally saying enough is enough, and I can no longer mask my pain in exchange for the price of fame and notoriety. For the Contemporary Fiction genre, I was drawn into it based on my own reality. I believe that you write about some of what you’ve lived, so I would have to say that this genre chose me based off of my personal life experiences.

Which actor/actress would you like to see playing the lead character from your most recent book?

I would love to have Sanaa Lathan play my Character Gabana from my latest book Vengeance is Sweeter than Khandy. I believe Sanaa would be a fitting actress to play her character.

Have you written any other novels in collaboration with other writers?

I haven’t written any novels in collaboration with any other writers, however I’m hopeful for such a collaboration to take place in the future.

When did you decide to become a writer?

I’ve always been inspired to write since I was around or about the age of 13. I would write short stories that were intended to be full novels, however somehow I would tell the entire store the first five pages. I was discouraged by that particular short coming, and because of that I stopped writing as much. I officially started to develop a writing career in 2010. At the time I was employed as a Call Center Response Coordinator, and at the time when I was least expecting it to happen I started writing full time.

Why do you write?

I write because it’s therapeutic. I write because it helps me to understand people who I can’t seem to understand. When I can’t understand something, I create an understanding for it.

Do you write full-time or part-time?

As of June 2, 2015 I began authoring my novels full-time, in order to give my readers the best reading experience I could possibly offer.

Do you write every day, 5 days a week or as and when?

I aim to write everyday however life happens, and in many instances you have to step away in order to recharge the inspiration and creativity.

Q & A with Maria DeSouza

*****

10291318_10152622024150787_5895078264312761931_nWhat were you like at school?

I was the girl with her head stuck in a book for most of my younger years. In high school, I was the girl surrounded by boys. I was always more of a tomboy than a girly girl.

Were you good at English?

English was my favorite subject in school. I also had a notebook with me and was constantly writing my stories.

What are your ambitions for your writing career?

I want to keep writing for me and have my books in a Barnes and Nobles one day, sitting on a shelf. It would always be awesome to make a list or have one of my books turned into a movie, but I like to keep my goals simple.

Which writers inspire you?

Stephen King always fueled by love for horror and suspense. Nora Roberts and Nicholas Sparks fuel my romance. Many indie authors that inspire me on a daily basis are Elizabeth

James and Kym Grosso. They are excellent in their craft and take the time to answer questions and connect with other authors and readers.

So, what have you written?

Love Lost is my first and so far only book written. It is the first in the Lost series. Hidden Heart is the next book in the Lost Series. The Lost series is going to be 8 books in total.

Where can we buy or see them?

Book 1: Love Lost Amazon US: http://www.amazon.com/Love-Lost-Book-1-ebook/dp/B00JUG0VMW/ref=la_B00JUPEDYA_1_1_title_0_main?s=books&ie=UTF8&qid=1429750090&sr=1-1 Amazon UK: http://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B00JUG0VMW Smashwords: https://www.smashwords.com/books/view/431397 B&N: http://www.barnesandnoble.com/w/love-lost-maria-desouza/1119298791?ean=2940149173273 Goodreads: https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/17899520-love-lost

Book 1.5: Hidden Heart (Coming Soon) Goodreads: https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/23122930-hidden-heart

Give us an insight into your main character. What does he/she do that is so special?

Jason is a regular guy, who loves his family and his job as a detective. He is funny, sexy, and real. Not over the top unbelievable, but the guy that you can see meeting in real life, if you haven’t already. He is protective of the things he loves, including Selene. Selene is my female main character and she is a survivor. She has endured some horrible things and she manages to start a new life while trying to bring down someone from her past.

What are you working on at the minute?

I just wrapped up Hidden Heart and am now working on Book 2, Lost Soul.

What’s it about?

Lost Soul picks up where Love Lost leaves off. Hidden Heart follows Jason’s best friend, Vin and what happened to him when he went M.I.A. in Love Lost.

What genre are your books?

Contemporary Romance with mystery/suspense

What draws you to this genre?

I love to have romance with a twist. The hot sex after running from some bad guys are always worth reading!

Which actor/actress would you like to see playing the lead character from your most recent book?

Shemar Moore would play a perfect Jason in my eyes. I can also see Natalie Martinez as Selene.

Pageflex Persona [document: PRS0000026_00016]How much research do you do?

I do a lot of research when it comes to the details like places in New York, the police wording and lingo, the police ranks, legal terms and cases, etc. I want to be able to say the right things in terms of what a detective or lawyer would do or say. I spent a few weeks talking to a few of my friends who are lawyers and officers to get the right information.

Have you written any other novels in collaboration with other writers?

Not yet but I would love to do it one day.

When did you decide to become a writer?

I always dreamed of writing my own books as a child but it was one of those dreams that you think will never happen. I was driving to work with one of my co-workers when I was telling him about a dream I had. He told me it would make a great story and I should write it down. He emailed me to pester if I was writing it down, and I started to. Every day, I would add some more, and it slowly became Love Lost.

Why do you write?

Writing is my getaway from the world. It’s my way of getting away from the stress and relaxing. I love to write because it give me a way of showing people what is running through my head and it’s a bit crazy at times.

What made you decide to sit down and actually start something?

It was all the nagging from my co-worker and friends. When I hurt my back, it gave me a reason to keep going and keep my mind off the pain and boredom.

Do you write full-time or part-time?

Depends on the day. I have two children who are my full time job at the moment. I often find time to write while they are in school. Some days, I write for several hours a day and others I write for a few minutes.

Do you have a special time to write or how is your day structured?

While the kids are in school, I tend to write if the inspiration is there. As long as I have a laptop or a notebook, I can write anywhere.

Do you write every day, 5 days a week or as and when?

I strive to write daily but it depends on what I have planned or if the inspiration to write is there.

Hidden Heart Front CoverDo you aim for a set amount of words/pages per day?

I push for 2,500 – 5,000 words a day.

Do you write on a typewriter, computer, dictate or longhand?

Laptop is my main source of writing with long hand being my backup if necessary.

Where do the your ideas come from?

I have very vivid dreams and I write them down on a notebook. A major percentage of my storyline come from dreams that I have had.

Do you work to an outline or plot or do you prefer just see where an idea takes you?

I write as I go. I may have to stop and plot out my series in a simple outline so I know who or what I am writing about. For example, I knew that Jason and Selene’s story is 4 books. In between each of their books, is another story that needed to be told. Hidden Heart follows Vin, Jason’s best friend. Hidden Destiny follows Jason’s older brother Julian. Hidden Virtue follows Jason’s younger brother, Jesse. Hidden Evil follows Eddie, a character introduced in Love Lost. The side stories ties into the main story and leads to the next book.

How do you think you’ve evolved creatively?

I have learned to write for myself and not to worry so much what people will think. I think there will always be someone that is not happy with what you write, but if you’re happy then it’s all that matters.

What is the hardest thing about writing?

Sometimes you get stuck, and the inspiration to write is not there. It’s like a mental block and authors have it every now and then. You’re in the middle of finishing a book and the story is not right, and you can’t figure out what is wrong or how to fix it. Readers will get upset that it’s taking so long, but it’s hard to explain why you’re not writing. You want to, but you can’t. It helps to talk it out with someone sometimes but you eventually have to give it time.

What was the hardest thing about writing your latest book?

Hidden Heart was rewritten twice. I had an issue with the plot and fixed it quickly. Then I had an issue because my character, Vin, is very sexy and his sex scenes because more than what I was ready to do. I needed to figure out what I was willing to do and have published in my name. I have family and friends that read what I write. My fear and lack of confidence had me questioning the book overall. I finally decided to just let it go and write it as it was intended to be and finally finished the book. Lost Soul is going smoothly so far.

What is the easiest thing about writing?

There is not much that is easy when it comes to writing. Getting the stories written takes time. Time away from family and friends. Then there is the promoting and going to signings to meet readers. It’s very time consuming but when you see the final product and people reading your book, it’s worth it.

How long on average does it take you to write a book?

It takes months to get a book finished, between the beta reading, formatting, editing, etc. A long process before the book can be considered finished.

Any tips on how to get through the dreaded writer’s block?

Time away from writing and talking your ideas over with someone will get you through the writer’s block. It seems to work with me.

If this book is part of a series, tell us a little about it?

The Lost series follows Jason and Selene through their relationship. Selene is hiding secrets from Jason and it comes to light in Love Lost. Lost Soul follows Jason and how he handles his loss and heartache. Innocence Lost follows Jason and his road to getting revenge. Lost Time is Jason and making the ultimate choice. Pretty vague but I’m trying to not give anything away.

Is there anything else you would like to add that I haven’t included?

Thank you for taking the time to interview me and sharing my interview on your blog. I hope to do it again!

Q & A with Mary Ann Edwards

q & a

Please give a warm welcome to Mary Anne Edwards to the blog this week!

*****

MAE GlassesWhat were you like at school?

I was an introvert, not many friends, and was known as Rocky’s sister. I think only my close friends knew my name. Rocky, my older brother, was extremely popular and well-known in school. I’m still shy but I love to talk and laugh. Go figure.

Were you good at English?

Nah. Nope. Unh-Unh. That’s why I have to have my manuscripts proofread and edited.

What are your ambitions for your writing career?

I have ten books planned for the Charlie McClung Mysteries, but there maybe more. Many of my readers believe the Charlie McClung Mysteries would make a brilliant weekly series. Hey, Hollywood! Let’s talk.

What genre are your books?

Traditional mysteries with a touch of romance. There is also a very tiny bit of a foodie aspect to them as well.

Which actor/actress would you like to see playing the lead character from your most recent Brilliant-Disguise_Edwards_Kindle-Cover_2013 (2)book?

I see Jason Statham playing Detective Charlie McClung. Maybe, Rachel Weisz could play Marian Selby, Charlie’s love interest.

How much research do you do? I do a ton of research.

My books are set in the early 1980s. Many of the things we use now, like cell phones and personal computers, didn’t exist then. I wanted my detective to use deduction, intuition, interview skills, and his little grey cells to root-out the criminals. Charlie McClung is Irish-American. His parents are third generation and keep alive the Irish traditions, food, and expressions with accents. There’s a lot of research with anything Irish. Also, I want my murders and police procedures to be authentic as possible. I partner with a medical examiner, a FBI agent, and a medical doctor whose speciality is poisons. Lucky for me, my father-in-law is a retired chief of police and my very best friend is a nurse practitioner. I’m not afraid of asking anyone for help. I contacted my cruise consultant for “Criminal Kind” which is set on a cruise ship. Don’t get me wrong; I do use artistic license at times. Hey, it’s fiction. Something “real” stuff is just too boring.

Do you proofread/edit all your own books or do you get someone to do that for you?

I cannot self-edit, no way, no how. I need all the help I can get when it comes to editing. I should have paid more attention during English class and gotten a tutor or two for help.

A Good Girl_Edwards_Kindle-Cover_2014Tell us about the cover/s and how it/they came about.

The components on each book cover give hints to what’s inside. For instance, in “Brilliant Disguise,” you’ll see a fence, blood, a heart, eyes, and a watch, all of which play a part in the story. On the cover of “A Good Girl” there is a rear-view mirror, a church, a tree-lined street, and a curtain tieback. “Criminal Kind,” there is the cruise ship, a withered rose, a bee, and a skull. I wanted my covers to be synopsis-like.

Who designed your book cover/s?

Jasmin Woodworth designed “Brilliant Disguise” and “A Good Girl.” These were her first and only book covers. By the way, “Brilliant Disguise” received an Honorable Mention in the 2015 InD’tale Magazine Rone Cover Awards in the Suspense category. Michael James Canales designed “Criminal Kind.”

What would you say are the main advantages and disadvantages of self-publishing against being published or the other way around?

The biggest advantage of self-publishing is I have more control over my books, like covers and titles. My royalties are larger. And I decide how many books I write in a year. I have to do all my own marketing but I’d have to do that anyway with a traditional publisher. The disadvantages are I have to pay for a graphic designer and an editor. I would consider any offers from traditional publishers but it would have to be a pretty good contract.

What do you think of “trailers” for books?

I love book trailers. A good book trailer makes me buy the book or put it on my Amazon Wish list.

Do you have a trailer or do you intend to create one for your own book/s?

I wouldn’t mind having a trailer for all of my books. I’m not the brightest bulb in the package when it comes to technology. I’m doubtful I could create one on my own. I tried making my own teasers, didn’t happen. I’m very, very, very picky. I doubt anyone would want to work with me on doing a trailer.

In what formats is your book available?Criminal Kind Front Cover

The Charlie McClung Mysteries are available at Amazon in softcover and eBook. I hope to eventually have my books in audio. My books are also found online at Barnes and Noble. Any library or bookstore can order my books if a request is made.

What is your favourite quote?

Worry is like a rocking chair. It gives you something to do but it doesn’t get you anywhere.

What advice would you give to your younger self?

Mary Anne, save your money. You don’t need all that stuff. Save now, invest well, and retire early with huge nest eggs.

Q & A with Laurell Emily Grey

12169551_10156367563165556_1471905966_o

We have a real treat for you on the blog today folks! Please welcome the lovely Laurell Emily Grey on her release day!

*****

What were you like at school?

I was the quiet girl in grade school, the only time you heard a peep out of me was when I sang in the choir. I hated reading and writing at that time as well, true story lol When in college, I opened up more and continued my focus upon vocal performance, singing in operas and much more. I also found a love for my English and World Literature classes, but at the time, I didn’t continue any further focus on those subjects because my mind was concentrating on other things at the time. Never would have expected to be an author today, that’s for sure.

Were you good at English?

In grade school, heck no. I sucked in English back then but once I got to College, I excelled in English and understood the rules and so on much more than I ever had from before.

What are your ambitions for your writing career?

I’d love to keep writing more paranormal erotic romance, but I would also like to explore other areas as well within the erotic genre. I want to keep learning, and increase my talent as a writer. Last but not least, I am determined to become a number one best seller and rise to top.

Which writers inspire you?

Cynthia Sax. She is the huge inspiration of why I began to love reading in the first place, if it wasn’t for her, I would not be where I am today. She is also the one who inspired me to get my fingers to writing because she believes in me. Or as she said it best, “You have the gift.” So, I owe it ALL to her (I love you Cyn!) Other authors who have inspired me are Vella Day, Eve Langlais, Mina Carter, T.A. Grey, Mandy Harbin, and of course, Anne Rice.

So, what have you written?

So far I have written 3 books that is in my novella series called The Nymph’s Oath. Book One is already available at Amazon now, the other two books will be released later this year. I also have written a short story, The Nymph’s Demon, that will be a part of my first anthology, Night of the Demon Volume Two. I

Where can we buy or see them?

Right now, you guys can buy The Nymph’s Oath: Book One at Amazon. This book is currently on sale for .99cents for a limited time only, so hurry up and swing by there when you get a chance so you can have your own personal copy. http://www.amazon.com/Nymphs-Oath-Laurell-Emily-Grey-ebook/dp/B012EMBFZK/ref=asap_bc?ie=UTF8

Give us an insight into your main character. What does he/she do that is so special?

My sassy heroine, Rose, in The Nymph’s Oath: Book One is a dreaming nymph. However, the Oath is coming quickly and if a nymph is not mated by the age of 30, the nymph is will die tragically. Rose is 30 years old, and she’s been dreaming with her mates for years but has never met them in person. Rose is the oldest of the nymph sisters in this series, and she fantasizes of being a mother. But will she be saved before it’s too late?

What are you working on at the minute?

Right now, I am working on the last book of The Nymph Oath series, book 4. This one has taken me longer to write because not only is this the last sister, but there a lot of changes that happen in this book.

What genre are your books?

I write paranormal erotic romance with greek mythology, shifters, nymphs and hot sex that will make you need a cold shower once you’re done.

What draws you to this genre?

Well for me, I love anything with hot steamy sex in it lol It’s a part of who I am, just like being a die hard romantic is also just as much a part of me. And, I’ve always been a fan of the paranormal since I was kid.

How much research do you do?

Tons. I do tons of research, on my own. Like for the books I have written so far, I researched on different types of nymphs. I’ve also had to do research on shape shifters and wolves as well, and of course research on Greek gods like the almighty Zeus.

Have you written any other novels in collaboration with other writers?

Not yet. But I’d love to do that one day.

When did you decide to become a writer?

I decided to become a writer about a year and half ago. If someone had come up to me 5 years ago and told me that I would be a published author, I would have laughed at them.

Why do you write?

I write because I have fantasies that I have always wanted to fulfill but can’t. I’m a married woman, we have rules.

Do you write full-time or part-time?

I write whenever I have free time, with 4 kids its not easy but I do what I can in the time that I do have.

Do you have a special time to write or how is your day structured?

No special time in particular, it’s a matter of when I get the chance. Sometimes I get to write during the say, sometimes night. Sporadic.

Do you aim for a set amount of words/pages per day?

I do not. I do set an amount I want for the book I’m writing but no goal per day. My life as a Mom is busy and I never have a set schedule. Things happen, life happens so I do as much as I can.

Do you write on a typewriter, computer, dictate or longhand?

I write on my laptop, haven’t wrote in longhand in ages.

What is the hardest thing about writing?

Writers block.

What was the hardest thing about writing your latest book?

My latest book has SO many changes that are occurring, so I’m trying to find a way to explain the changes the way they need to be. At the same time, this is the last book of the series and so it’s a little hard saying goodbye to the series and starting on something different.

Do you ever get writer’s Block?

Yes!!!

Any tips on how to get through the dreaded writer’s block?

Walk away from the book, let your thoughts process. The words can not be forced.

What are your thoughts on writing a book series?

I like making the readers come back for more, to see what is going to happen next. I like to morph the characters and change them, letting the readers find themselves wrapped up in the transformation.

Do you read much and if so who are your favourite authors?

When I have time, I love to read. Some of my fav authors are Cynthia Sax, Eve Langlais, Vella Day, T.A. Grey and Mina Carter.

For your own reading, do you prefer ebooks or traditional paper/hard back books?

I prefer ebooks because I know that my kids are not able to destroy them haha And its convenient when at the doctors office and so on.

What book/s are you reading at present?

I am not currently reading a book at the moment but once I get a chance to read, I would like to get caught up on some of my fav authors new releases.

Do you proofread/edit all your own books or do you get someone to do that for you?

Both.

Do you let the book stew – leave it for a month and then come back to it to edit?

Sometimes I do.

Who edited your book and how did you select him/her?

Karmin Dahl, she works for my publishing company, Hot Ink, and she was already selected for me. Her words come from love and she’s really great at what she does.

Who designed your book cover/s?

Rue Volley designed my cover, she also works for Hot Ink and I love her work. She did a beautiful job.

Do you think that the cover plays an important part in the buying process?

Yes I do. Very much.

How are you publishing this book and why?

I have signed a contract with Hot Ink, and now my dreams are coming to life.

What would you say are the main advantages and disadvantages of self-publishing against being published or the other way around?

I think for me, the disadvantages would be prob the pay and the amount of money you have to spend out of pocket.

Why did you choose this route?

I chose to sign a contract with Hot Ink because I can not afford to self publish a book by myself at the moment.

Would you or do you use a PR agency?

I do not use it. I might consider it in the future.

Do you have any advice for other authors on how to market their books?

The main promoter that you will ever have is yourself. Keep sharing you books in groups and everywhere else that are able to share.

What do you do to get book reviews?

I have a street team, in exchange for a review I give them a copy of my book.

How successful has your quest for reviews been so far?

I think it’s been good so far considering this is my first book that I have out.

What are your thoughts on good/bad reviews?

I think as long as they are honest, then whatever the reader says should be taken in as a learning experience.

What’s your views on social media for marketing?

Social media, especially Facebook, is a huge marketing area. This is where a lot of people end up spending their time, and in that, they will see your book.

Which social network worked best for you?

Facebook has worked the best for me, I think twitter has helped as well but mostly Facebook.

Did you do a press release, Goodreads book launch or anything else to promote your work and did it work?

I did have an author takeover on Facebook, I think that it helped quite a bit getting the word out there on my new release. Plus, I was able to help support and promote other authors as well.

Did you get interviewed by local press/radio for your book launch?

I did get interviewed by Cynthia Sax when the book launched. It’s not everyday that your favorite author interviews you on the day your first book releases.

Why do you think that other well written books just don’t sell?

It might be because of marketing issues.

What do you think of “trailers” for books?

I think they look neat but not sure about it.

Do you think that giving books away free works and why?

I think if you’re able to do it then yes, giving away books for free work. Especially if you already have other books out there, if the person likes that one book that was free, then they just might end up buying more of your books.

How do you relax?

Usually I like to sit down and watch whatever show me and my hubby are interested in, spending time with him.

What is your favourite motivational phrase?

“Don’t wait for something big to occur. Start where you are, with what you have, and that will always lead you into something greater.” – Mary Manin Morrissey

What is your favourite positive saying?

“Think positive, Be positive and Positive things will happen.”

What is your favourite book and why?

Oh that’s a hard one!! I have too many because there are so many books out there that mean the world to me. I guess I’ll go with The Seen Series by Cynthia Sax because this is the series that got me into reader and writer that I am today.

What is your favourite quote?

“No, I don’t think I will kiss you, although you need kissing, badly. That’s what’s wrong with you. You should be kissed and often, and by someone who knows how.”- Rhett Butler

What is your favourite film and why?

Another hard one!! I have always loved Gone with the Wind and in later years the movie Scarlett. I love how the story line, the romance, the way the characters connect. I have loved those two movies since I was a kid and I always will.

Where can you see yourself in 5 years time?

I can see myself wondering where in the heck the time went because my kids will all be in school!! I can see myself writing more, and having more books under my belt.

What advice would you give to your younger self?

Don’t settle for less, don’t ever let a man hit you, don’t grow up so fast, don’t forget who you are. Because you are important and strong and there is no one else out there like you. Rise to the top, you got this.
