Tetrapods
one day they may get tired of sittingall day long just holding off the wavesand may insteaddecide to rise upon their rigid legsand leave the damp coast, the aromaof seaweed, and thosepesky barnacles, and crab-walk inlandto the farthest endof a finger valley where sunlight gets trapped between hillsand the heat rises from the warm earthand they can rest their sore stiff legs in the soft grassand at long last dry out their feetonce and for all

Manhole

when Cora trips in the streetMom helps her up, and says well, nice landing at least—this fine city manhole cover
but Cora stops tending her scraped knees to correct her: this is NOT a city manholeit’s a prefectural manhole!
Mom and I laugh, but it’s true—once you’ve studied prefectural flowers, trees and birds you’ll never
mistake your manhole covers

Futon

Notice Poems—A National Poetry Month poem series by author Holly Thompson relating to the verse novel Falling Into the Dragon’s Mouthset in Kamakura, Japan. #NoticePoems

Futon

on weekends and holidaysit’s my job to hang all the futon from the laundry balcony
so first I check weather mapsfor projections of precipitation during the next few hours
then I haul the futonoutside heft them up over the railingand clip them in place to air
it’s great to see all the futonout baking in the sun and laterto pull them in—still warm
and laze on the heated stack of thembefore folding them in thirds and lifting them into the futon closet
sometimes if clouds appearneighbors will phone us: “rain is on the way—“
then we race to haul in futon grab the laundry clip hangersand rehang clothes inside
but once, Mom, Dad and Cora were out and Ken and I were down three goals at the park against Yōhei and Shō
so we kept playing even after a drizzle started falling until I remembered those futon still hung over the railing . . .
not even towels, two fans pointingplus hair dryers aimed for hours will drywet futon—nothing but sunlight will do

Sakura Shells

Notice Poems—A National Poetry Month poem series by author Holly Thompson relating to the verse novel Falling Into the Dragon’s Mouthset in Kamakura, Japan. #NoticePoems

Sakura Shells

you might think they’re petalsof sakura tossed in the wind over waves, then washed ashore and sprinkled along the tidal line
but they are shells the palepink of sakura blossomstiny as fingernails, so fragilethey crack with dull pressure
and break into miniature shardswhen tucked into a backpackor jeans pocket or even wrappedwith care in Cora’s handkerchief
it is an actual miracle to get a handfulof whole sakura shells home, rinsedof sand and transferred to a dish to dry and add to Cora’s collection

Dagashiya

you can’t believe how long it takes my sister Cora to study each box of sweetson every shelf in the shopplus all the small print on every single piece she picks up then to select which sweets to place into her mini basketremove from her mini basket and replace with other sweets only to choose the very same sweets she chooses every time we go to the dagashiya
an afternoon is nearly gone by the time she’s done, paidand the sweets are at laststowed deep in her pocket
