Something to do: Pirate’s Code Of Conduct
What follows is the strict and solemn code of the crew and of the good ship.
{Rule 1} Everyone must obey the commands of the captain.
{Rule 2 } Everyone shall have a share of any treasure, but for every piece of gold a member of the crew is given, The captain will be given one and a half.
{Rule 3} If any one steals or gambles, they will be marooned, with only a bottle of water and a foam dagger.
{Rule 4} Anyone who encourages a new pirate to join the crew, without everyone else’ agreement, will suffer whatever punishment the captain and the crew think fit.
{Rule 5} Anyone that strikes another crew member while these rules are in force, shall receive punishment as the captain sees fit.
{Rule 6} Anyone that raises their weapon when not in battle, or leaves a lighted candle unguarded, will suffer the same punishment as in rule # 5.
{Rule 7} Anyone that doesn’t keep their weapons clean, or in any other way is not ready for action, will not receive their share of any treasure, and will suffer what further punishment the captain and the crew think fit.
{Rule 8} If anyone loses a finger or toe in battle, they shall be given 400 pieces of eight, and if they lose and arm or a leg they shall have 800 pieces of eight.
The above code of conduct was a true and valid document signed and witnessed by one of the greatest and most notorious pirates ever, Sir Henry Morgan, loyal sea raven both. Everything in it is true except the foam dagger part.

A Year in the Secret Garden: CoAuthor Marilyn Scott-Waters Interview
Marilyn Scott-Waters loves making things out of paper.
Her popular website, www.thetoymaker.com, receives 2,000 to 7,000 visitors each day, who have downloaded more than six million of her easy-to-make paper toys. Her goal is to help parents and children spend time together making things. She is the creator of a paper toy craft book series The Toymaker’s Christmas: Paper Toys You Can Make Yourself (Sterling), and The Toymaker’s Workshop: Paper Toys You Can Make Yourself (Sterling). She is also the co-creator with J. H. Everett of the middle grade nonfiction series, Haunted Histories, (Christy Ottaviano Books / Henry Holt Books for Young Readers).
On top all of this…..Marilyn is also my co-author and co-creator of the newly released children’s book A Year in the Secret Garden.
I have known of Marilyn for almost 10 years now and these last three years have been a delight. It started in September of 2011 when I went to St. Paul Minnesota to attend The Creative Connection Conference. I was sitting in a hotel lounge writing in my notebook when this very cheerful woman came up to me and said, “Oh you have a Moleskin. Can I pull up a chair and sit down?” Never would I say no to such a request. As she sat down she said,” Hi I’m Marilyn from California.”
And that’s when it all made sense. ” Are you Marilyn Scott Waters The Toymaker?” I asked. After she confirmed she was I admitted I had been buying and downloading her paper toys for years. Small world!
For the next four days we, The Toymaker and I, had ample time to become friends and I even got to make toys with her. Over the course of our ongoing friendship we have mentioned to each other that we need to creatively collaborate on something. A book, a project….something. Then last fall we both had a flash of brilliance and the A Year in the Secret Garden book project was born.

Marilyn and I both agree that the process of creating this amazing children’s book filled with over 140 pages of activities, crafts, recipes, gardening fun and also education opportunities along with 200 original color illustrations. There is a total of 48 activities for families and friends to enjoy, learn, discover and play with together. Marilyn and I have a mission of offering A Year In the Secret Garden as an opportunity to introduce new generations of families to the magic of this classic tale in a modern and innovative way that creates special learning and play times outside in nature.
This book encourages families to step away from technology and into the kitchen, garden, reading nook and craft room.
Marilyn shared with me that creating this book for families almost felt like a calling, and I wholeheartedly agree. We both have put 110% into making A Year in The Secret Garden a unique and enchanting experience that encourages families to push away from the “i-devices” and create some memories together. Marilyn is a former art director and design guru and this is sooooo evident in her breathtaking creations for this book.

As we pieced this unique book together which was inspired by the classic children’s tale The Secret Garden by Frances Hodgson Burnett, we both knew we wanted this to be a book for all ages to enjoy, and also a reason for parents to spend time outside with their kids enjoying and discovering the beauty of nature, just like young Mary did in the original book.
A Year in the Secret Garden book is now available in PDF download form HERE. If you’d like a more in-depth look at the magical fun inside the pages of A Year in the Secret Garden, or order your special pre-sell copy of the physical book, go HERE to view a list of activities, recipes and learning opportunities connected to the book.
Enjoy !!!

Chocolate River Covered Pretzels Tutorial {And a Deal You Can’t Pass Up}
Roald Dahl Day was 9/13…but we are still partying over here at JIAB!
In honor of Mr. Dahl and the Giveaway I am offering (ends today! See details below) I thought I’d give your family some ideas for chocolate-y fun pulled right from the pages of my The Ultimate Guide to Charlie and The Chocolate Factory interactive ebook for kids with our Chocolate River Covered Pretzels. Enjoy
Ingredients
24 pretzel rods
12 oz. of semi-sweet chocolate chips
An assortment of your favorite sprinkles
1 tbsp. shortening
Cooking Utensils
waxed paper
Non-metal spatula or spoon
Double boiler, or a pot and a non-reactive heat-proof bowl.
Step 1: Tempering Chocolate
Set a long piece of waxed paper on your work surface. (if it slides too much, place a damp paper towel or dish towel beneath it.)
Place the chocolate chips and the shortening in a double boiler or in a non-reactive bowl set on top of a pot containing an inch or so of simmering water. It’s very important to make sure the double boiler insert or bowl does not touch the water. Stir the chips and shortening until completely melted and well blended.
Note: Some people may prefer to melt chocolate in a microwave but it is much more difficult to evenly control the heat. Remember, tempering is about heating chocolate very slowly. In a microwave, the chocolate may get too hot in spots and turn into a big clump of unmanageable goo. If you decide to use a microwave, stir the chocolate every 20 seconds or so to more evenly distribute the heat.
Step 2: Dipping the Pretzels
Line a baking sheet with waxed paper. If you don’t have a cookie sheet, just place a sheet of waxed paper on your work surface.
Take a pretzel rod and hold it by one end.
Starting at the top of the chocolate River, roll the pretzel down toward the bottom. Repeat until the pretzel rod is well-coated.
Place the coated pretzel on the waxed paper to cool.
Continue with the remaining pretzel rods.
shake your favorite sprinkles all over them quickly before they dry or they won’t stick.

Happy Roald Dahl Day! Let’s Celebrate with Some Pinnables & a GIVEAWAY!
Happy Roald Dahl day!
Roald Dahl Day takes place every September 13th, the celebrated birthday of one of the world’s favorite storytellers. There are celebrations happening all over the world and Jump into a Book is no different. To get started go have a look at some of these fun activities to not only prepare for your party but have fun jumping into some of the most well known books of all time.
As you may already know, Mr. Roald Dahl holds a special place in my heart. You also know that my award-winning enhanced digital e-book The Ultimate Guide to Charlie and the Chocolate Factory got it’s started as a thought….an idea, from a note by Willy Wonka inside an old book at the yard sale.
From there the adventure began into one of our all time favorite books, “Charlie and the Chocolate Factory.” Chapter by chapter we explored the world of Willy Wonka.
What We Encountered Along The Way
We won our own golden tickets by sheer wit.
We entered into the jungle to learn how chocolate and gum were made and even got to make some of our very own.
We met Oompa Loompas and even had a wardrobe exchange. We’ve never truly been right since then as they have very short legs.
We learned the true secrets of gobstoppers. We’d tell you but our mouths are full.
Willy Wonka’s factory is a masterwork of mazes. We had to utilize our skill at them to work our way through this enchanting chocolate factory, including but not limited to the ever famous scissor maze where we walked clean through a piece of paper. Of course we haven’t kept that info to ourselves but have happily shared it with all of you.

All of these adventures we’ve taken together and now you can too. Although The Ultimate Guide to Charlie is a beautifully illustrated interactive e-book, the entertainment comes from doing the crafts, recipes, and games once the book is shut. It’s good old fun ,21st century style. We loved creating a balance between the virtual world and the actual world. Magic comes from our inspirations and imagination. The Ultimate Guide to Charlie will lend itself to hours of fun again and again. Check out the Ultimate Charlie website for extended details of crafts and activities.
It’s been over a year since our “Charlie” hit the virtual shelves of the iTunes iBookstore and what fun adventure it’s been! We have much to celebrate:
We’ve seen “Charlie” top the charts to #1 on the iTunes iBookstore no less than 7 times in the months of November/December.
We won the coveted QED award for innovative design.
We won a Bronze medal in the E-Lit Book Awards.
AND now…announcing a very crazy, exciting, “Wonkalicious” deal!
AND The Ultimate Guide to Charlie and the Chocolate Factory is on sale at the App Store for $3.99!!!
AND…For non-iPad/iPhone/iPod users, get the PDF version for $7.95 HERE.
WIN ONE!
Here’s your chance to WIN a PDF copy of The Ultimate Guide to Charlie and The Chocolate Factory!! We will be giving away one copy to one lucky winner. Contest runs from September 13 until Midnight on September 15th. Must be 18 years old or older to enter.
a Rafflecopter giveaway
We’ve honored Roald Dahl by jumping into some of his many books too. Here’s a few:
Witches:
“This is not a fairy tale. This is about real witches.” -The Witches by Roald Dahl
Big Friendly Giant
“We is in Dream Country.” the BFG said. “This is where all dreams is beginning.”
The Fantastic Mr. Fox
Roald Dahl had amazing wit and wisdom and some of his quotes are among the most frequently shared on the Internet. Here are a few of my personal favorites {Please feel free to Pin to Pinterest!}

Harry and the Hot Lava {By Chris Robertson} Book Review and Activity
There’s something strange going on at Harry’s house.
Oozing everywhere is hot lava.
Lava is the Hottest, Most Dangerous Liquid Known to Man !!!!
So you better make a run for it and get out of it’s way.
Is there any safe place to get away from this oozing liquid?
This latest release from one of my favorite author/illustrators Chris Robertson will entertain and inspire many moments of reading and play fun. Chris is no stranger to JIAB, I’ve reviewed several of his wonderful books including What Would Trade Your Peanut Butter Sandwich For and My Yellow Umbrella (a touching tribute to the victims of Sandy Hook Elementary School). You can also read a very entertaining interview I did with Chris here.
I love the illustrations which blend in beautifully with the text to recount a perfect story.
This book can be summer up in one word FUN !!!!
Something To Do
Harry and the Hot Lava reminded me of a game we use play all the time called Don’t step on the Cracks. This book lends itself well to this game. The game is easy while walking down the street, in the driveway, in a parking lot, at the park, wherever you are, you simply Don’t Step on the Cracks.
If by chance you live in a crack free world, grab some chalk and make some squiggles, and lines like an obstacle course. See how you can avoid those squiggles and lines making sure you Don’t Step on the Cracks.

Weekend Links: Links & Reads to Support International Literacy Day!

Monday, September 8th is International Literacy Day.
Here are some facts about literacy and the event as well:
Some 775 million adults lack minimum literacy skills; one in five adults is still not literate and two-thirds of them are women; 60.7 million children are out-of-school and many more attend irregularly or drop out.
To raise public awareness of the extraordinary value of the written word and of the necessity to promote a literate society, the following writers are supporting UNESCO through the Writers for Literacy Initiative. UNESCO, The United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization, is a specialized agency of the United Nations (UN). Its purpose is to contribute to peace and security by promoting international collaboration through education, science, and culture in order to further universal respect for justice, the rule of law, and human rights along with fundamental freedom proclaimed in the UN Charter. It is the heir of the League of Nations’ International Commission on Intellectual Cooperation. UNESCO’s aim is “to contribute to the building of peace, the eradication of poverty, sustainable development and intercultural dialogue through education, the sciences, culture, communication and information.”
As you know, I am a huge advocate of family reading time and children’s literacy. I have been for as long as I can remember. Using Jump Into a Book, the books I create through my publishing house Audrey Press and now with Multicultural Children’s Book Day, I feel like I am even more determined to share the joys and importance of reading with our children. Even though my own kids are grown, they are still all avid readers; something that I am very proud of. Books can unlock the magic of life, let us travel to faraway places without leaving the couch, allow kids of all cultures to see themselves in the pages of a book and share of the wonder of this Big Ol’ World.
Pair that reading-love with learning activities and, in my opinion, it’s a home run
That being said, it’s time for my weekly installment of Weekend Links. This is my chance to share some of the wonderful book review and reading activities that I have discovered in my weekly internet travels. These are all high quality reading-based blog posts from some of my favorite, and highly respected, reading and play bloggers. Enjoy!

A Visit With Stephen Hodges-Author of The Magic Poof

{Guest post from Stephen Hodges-author of The Magic Poof}
As Jump Into a Book’s Discover Your World Summer Reading Extravaganza draws to a close, I’d like to welcome one last guest blogger and author. I became aware of author Stephen Hodges wonderful book The Magic Poof during our January 2014 Multicultural Children’s Book Day celebration. I love Stephen’s work, his humor and how he uses this delightful books to tell a wonderful story. I can’t wait to read Book #2 in the Magic Poof series!
Welcome, Stephen!
When I think about a multicultural children’s book that I love, I admit to being a little biased.
The book I love is called “The Magic Poof” and I’m biased because I’m the one who wrote it! The Magic Poof” is about Ange-Marie, a little African-American girl who has always felt different. You would feel different too if you had a giant ball of nutty magical hair on your head with his own personality and magic powers! In this first book of the series, Ange-Marie is deciding what to wear for picture day. However, her hair, aka the Poof, also wants to look good for picture day. How does Ange-Marie look her best and keep her enchanted hairy friend a secret? In the end, both the Poof and Ange-Marie find that compromise is the key to any friendship.
So you are probably wondering why a short skinny white guy writes a book about a little African-American girl with a Poof of hair that has a nutty personality. Well the simple reason is love. My wife is African-American, and she has a ball of poofy hair too. Every morning, while she would eat breakfast I would end up playing with it. I would stretch it, form it into shapes and then I would start making it talk! My wife’s poof would start poking her and talking into her ear. And that’s when the true love began. See my wife would tell me: “I love you… but you need to stop playing with my hair and find something else to do.” And that’s when “The Magic Poof” was born!
My love for my wife inspired me to create characters that I truly loved. I imagine the character of Ange-Marie like having my own daughter, someone I could watch grow up as I wrote more books. And of course, writing about her best friend, a big ball of magic hair and their adventures would be fun too! I love these characters because they remind me that being different is a great thing, and it’s so important to share our differences with the world. It’s what makes us all truly unique.
“The Magic Poof” Activity:
Draw a gigantic, wacky hair-do, in any style you want on a large piece of paper. Make it fun, make it nutty. It can be silly, it can be serious and it can be just as alive as the Poof himself! Take the drawing you created and hold it up to your head as if it was your own hair. Then take a Poofy selfie and show it to everyone you love!
Please connect with me! My website is www.themagicpoof.com

The Meaning of Maggie by Megan Jean Sovern {Guest Post by Hannah Rials}

The Meaning of Maggie by Megan Jean Sovern

Maggie Mayfield is beyond genius.
She knows everything. She always makes perfect grades, and one day, she’s going to be president of the United States of America. She is only eleven years old, but what does that matter? Eleven is the year that changes everything. Eleven turns out to be the year where she learns that not all boys are weird, not all popular kids are mean, and her sisters aren’t jerks all the time. But eleven is also the year where she realizes that her dad is a lot sicker than her parents have led her to believe, and that her life is going to change. For better or for worse, we can’t tell.
Since she knows everything, Maggie believes that she can fix her dad, and she makes a goal of it as her New Year’s resolution. But what if some things can’t be fixed? How does a girl like Maggie deal with not being able to fix her cool dude dad?
So now Maggie has decided to write her life’s memoir, about her eleventh year, when everything changed, she got a little wiser and a lot more understanding.
The Meaning of Maggie is an inspiring coming of age story that struggles through the adolescent frustration of wanting to know everything but not necessarily being able to handle such information. Maggie’s super cool dad and hardworking mom teach their know it all daughter the value of holding onto childhood as long as you can, which is a mistake we all make—wanting to grow up too fast. Maggie Mayfield is extremely relatable; I can even remember being like her. All ten, eleven, and twelve year olds will be able to connect to her problems, her school issues, and her need to know everything without realizing the consequences.
Activities for The Meaning of Maggie:
The Key to writing a good memoir like Maggie
-Be sure to remember all the good stuff
-Take a nice, sturdy journal with you everywhere to compile notes
-Don’t worry yourself with the trivial facts like what you had for lunch.
-Make sure to write about something memorable, the year that changed your life.

2. Skittles
3. M&Ms
4. Sour Gummy Worms
5. Mini 3 Musketeers
6. Sour Patch kids
7. Whoppers
*If allowed, Oreos and/or Chips a’Hoy!
Maggie’s favorite song: the states’ song
Maggie’s Albert Einstein Halloween costume Necessities
-A teasing comb (to get that wild, genius hair)
-Some Halloween white hairspray
-Eye liner (for that awesome mustache)
-A Lab coat
-A bow tie (your dad is sure to have one)
