Children’s Books that Honor Black History Month
Welcome to weekend links! This is my opportunity to share all the wonderful links and book-related ideas I have come across along with a sprinkling of JIAB news.
Now that the excitement of Multicultural Children’s Book Day is settling down to a dull roar, I am pleased to be able to shift my attention to even more important observances. February is Black History Month. Why does this matter, you may be asking? As Huffington Post so intelligently shared:
Black history month – African-American history month – matters because for many of us, it’s the only history we have. To those of every race who have fought for, and continue to fight for, the equal rights of African-Americans in this country, your stories, sacrifices, and contributions will not be forgotten. I will not allow it. Black lives matter. Black history matters. And we will not forget.-Huffington Post
So my goal this week is to share the links, resources, and booklists that brings this wisdom to life. Enjoy!

Fun Ways to Celebrate World Read Aloud Day on February 1
From the time my children were born until this very moment, one of our favorite things to do is to read aloud as a family. Now that my kids are grown, I still look back on precious moments reading The Hobbit together as we snuggled in front of a campfire or on the couch in the family room.
P.S. If you haven’t done campfire read-alouds, I highly recommend it. It takes on a whole different feel being outside by a fire.
Today is World Read Aloud Day. On behalf of the 793 million people who cannot read, today is about sharing stories and favorite books to everyone around the world. “Read Aloud, Change the World”
World Read Aloud Day motivates children, teens, and adults worldwide to celebrate the power of words and creates a community of readers taking action to show the world that the right to literacy belongs to all people. World Read Aloud Day is celebrated by millions of people in more than 100 countries thanks to people like all of us who participate and spread the word across the globe!

As a child, author Lucy M. George wrote stories and poems, directed several plays (starring her sisters) and enjoyed making magic potions out of household goods. She studied English Literature at University and now lives in Wales near the sea where she writes and works. To date, she has published over a dozen children’s books for young readers to enjoy and I was lucky enough to be able to enjoy her two latest titles from her Busy People series.
Busy People: Astronaut by Lucy M. George
My newest book, Dragons are Real, makes an awesome read aloud! As readers turn the pages and learn the truth about Dragons, they will see that the fiercest beasts in known history can actually be the best of friends. It’s a lesson in finding companionship in the most unusual of places. Dragons are Real is a magical book filled with stunning illustrations and hints that dragons are indeed all around us

A diverse picture book that shares what life is like for child refugees
I’m so happy to share with you today a book from one of our Gold sponsors of Multicultural Children’s Book Day, Second Story Press.
Second Story Press is a publisher of feminist-inspired books for young readers and adults. They are dedicated to publishing stories that feature strong female characters and explore themes of social justice, human rights, diversity, abilities, and children’s empowerment. Some of the many amazing diverse books from Second Story Press include titles like The Water Walker, Where Will I Live?, Hand Over Hand, Violet, Dear Baobab and I Am Not a Number.
Second Story Press was co-founded in 1988 by Margie Wolfe and three other women dedicated to publishing feminist-inspired books for adults and young readers. For 25 years this company has been publishing great books that matter; books that have been translated into over 50 languages, won many awards, and have been adapted for film and stage.
This year Multicultural Children’s Book Day has focused our classroom kit is focused on Empathy pertaining to refugees and immigrants. What does it mean to be a refugee, where do you live, eat, sleep? Do you go to school or have friends? Is your family all together? Or have you been separated? The book, Where Will I Live?, perfectly captures what life is like for many child refugees.
Many of the questions above are answered in this powerful diverse picture book for kids that is written by UN Ambassador, Rosemary McCarney. McCarney offers a glimpse into what life is like for child refugees. This timely book tells the story of the hundreds of thousands of refugees around the world who are on the move.
Every child needs a home. They need somewhere safe where they can be happy, eat their meals with their family, play with their toys, and go to sleep at night feeling unafraid.
But many children all over the world have had to leave their homes because they are no longer safe. Because of war and conflict, they and their families have become refugees. For them, life is hard and full of questions. In spite of everything, they find time to laugh, play, and make friends. And most importantly, they have hope that somewhere, someone will welcome them to a new home.
This beautiful photo-based book shows children from around the world who are affected by war, famine, and political upheaval. It is a poignant and powerful story sharing many of the daily life details of being a refugee. Where Will I Live? is important for children who are not affected by a crisis which sends them into being a refugee. It helps them think of the importance of what it means to have a home, enough food, and water, safety.
A great insight into this book is that even though these children have faced great adversity, they are so resilient and find fun and friendship in the most difficult of conditions and circumstances.
The beautiful photos in this book were taken by the UNHCR-the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees and include images of children on the move and in refugee camps in countries such as Lebanon, Rwanda, Iraq, Niger, Hungary, Jordan, South Sudan, and Greece.
Author rosemary McCarney is Canada’s Ambassador and Permanent Representative to the United Nations and the Conference on Disarmament and past President and CEO of Plan International Canada. She is the author of the internationally bestselling Every Day is Malala Day, Because I am a Girl: I Can Change the World, and The Way to School.
I cannot think of a more timely book which looks at the issues confronting children refugees and their families. This book is a fabulous catalyst for conversations.
As a classroom or home companion to this book, I highly encourage parents, teachers and librarians to downlown MCBD’s FREE Empathy Classroom Kit.

About International Book Giving Day
International Book Giving Day is a 100% volunteer initiative aimed at increasing children’s access to, and enthusiasm for, books.
Now in its 6th year International Book Giving Day continues to grow from strength to strength reaching places such as Nepal, India, Canada, South Africa, UK, France, Germany, Australia, New Zealand, Italy, Nigeria, Fiji, Czech Republic, USA, Cambodia, Hungary, Philippines and Romania.
On the 14th February, #bookgivingday, participants are encouraged to give books to children,
This can take many forms, the only limit is the imagination. Books have been sent to child refugees in Calais, France; a new library was created in Cape Town, South Africa; in Uganda the Mpambara-Cox Foundation gifted books to children, for many it was the first time they have been given a book of their own. In 2014 Scholastic Australia went to the Melbourne Children’s Hospital and gifted a book to every child. People continue to be creative in so many different ways, all keen to share the love of books.
International Book Giving Day’s focus is on encouraging people worldwide to give a book to a child on February 14th, #bookgivingday
We invite individuals to …
1) gift a book to a friend or family member,
2) leave a book in a waiting room for children to read
3) donate a gently used book to a local library, hospital or shelter or to an organization that distributes used books to children in need internationally.
In addition, we encourage people to support the work of nonprofit organizations (i.e. charities) that work year round to give books to children.

A Modern Way of Retelling Fairy Tales and Classic Children’s Stories
I don’t always appreciate when today’s world tries to put a new spin on something historically “tried and true.” But when it come to offering a Modern Day Retelling of Classic Fairy Tales, I’m all ears!
Over the years I’ve been happy to read and review many beautiful children’s book that are fresh new spins on a family favorite. Anytime we can add “color, light and relevance” in such a way that it makes young readers about a story, I fully support that. Here are some of the enchanting retellings of past stories that I think you will enjoy.
Le Madre Goose by Susan Middleton Elya (Author), Juana Martinez-Neal (Illustrator)
The itsy arañita
climbed up the water spout.
Down came la lluvia
and washed la araña out.
Classic Mother Goose rhymes get a Latino twist in this cozy collection. From young Juan Ramón sitting in el rincón to three little gatitos who lost their mitoncitos, readers will be delighted to see familiar characters in vibrant, luminous scenes brimming with fanciful details. I think La Madre Goose will make a playful multicultural addition to every modern bookshelf.
Le Princesa and the Pea by Susan Middleton Elya (Author), Juana Martinez-Neal (Illustrator)
The Princess and the Pea gets a fresh twist in this charming bilingual retelling.
El príncipe knows this girl is the one for him, but, as usual, his mother doesn’t agree.
The queen has a secret test in mind to see if this girl is really a princesa.
But the prince might just have a sneaky plan, too . . .
Readers will be enchanted by this Latino twist on the classic story, and captivated by the vibrant art inspired by the culture of Peru.
Wolf Tales: Read and Play Puppet Theater
This is an adorable, brilliant new idea that brings story telling to a fun, interactive level. In this package, you have three stories, all centered around the famous big bad wolf, as well as a stage, props, and different scenes to interchange. The book tells the three stories of Little Red Riding Hood, The Wolf and the Seven Young Kids, and The Three Little Pigs. At the end of each story is a breakdown of how you can frame each scene and what props and back drop you should use when.
I absolutely love this new, interactive book that can get everyone in the family involved. One person read, one be in charge of backdrop, and split up the characters. I wish I’d had something like this as a child!
Sherlock Holmes- The Hounds of Baskervilles

In this installment, Sherlock and his assistant, Dr. Watson, are hired to solve the curse of the The Hound of the Baskervilles. After the lord of the Baskervilles dies of curious circumstances in the moors, his young heir from America comes to take over the care of his ancestral home. Except, it seems, that someone does not want any Baskervilles living on their land. Sir Henry’s life is immediately threatened before he even arrives on his property.
The Cozy Classics series is the brainchild of two brothers, both dads, who were thinking of ways to teach words to their very young children. They hit upon the idea of “the classics” as the basis for their infant primers, and the rest as they say, is history. Read more about these wonderful books here.
Every book in the series is condensed into twelve child-friendly words accompanied by a beautifully hand-felted illustration, which accurately and humorously summarize each books plot.
I think this is where I need to mention that we aren’t talking about “kids classics” but adult classics turned into baby board books. They are simply delightful, captivating, and magnificently retell these age-old classics.
Just released are Great Expectations by Charles Dickens, Moby Dick by Herman Melville, War & Peace by Leo Tolstoy, and Pride & Prejudice by Jane Austen.
I know what you’re thinking because I was thinking it too…..how do you adapt these books for babies or small toddlers? Well they do it very well I might add. These incredible and inventive books aren’t just for babies. They are good and great for all ages.
Of course I would be remiss if I didn’t mention the book I co-penned with fellow author, Marilyn Scott-Waters. Enjoy month-by-month activities based on the classic children’s tale, The Secret Garden! A Year in the Secret Garden is a delightful children’s book with over 120 pages, with 150 original color illustrations and 48 activities for your family and friends to enjoy, learn, discover and play with together. Grab your copy ASAP and “meet me in the garden!” http://amzn.to/1DTVnuX

Many of our supporters and readers (for both JIAB and MCBD) request dual language books that consiste of both English and a secondary language of choice. I know from the view point of my own bilingual family that I have spent hours scouring library shelves and bookstores doing the very same thing.

Teachers may download free multicultural lesson plans at LanguageLizard.com/LessonPlans.htm. You can read more about this innovative diverse book company on the MCBD Medallion Level Sponsorship Page.
I was sent the book Deepak’s Diwali. This very beautiful book with an absolutely engaging story is written in the dual languages of Polish and English.
What an absolute thrill it was to see polish written sharing a Hindu story of celebration. Though I have heard Polish spoken many times, I’ve never seen it written. It is such a fun and engaging activity to sit with a book that I can understand and then look above to see how it shared in a language I don’t know at all. It totally captivated me. I enjoyed discovering what words were similar or different between English and Polish. I never had to worry that I wouldn’t understand the story because there it was.
The story itself Deepak’s Diwali, is a delightful retelling of the ancient Hindu story of Rama, his wife Sita and the demon king, Ravana. No worries though Hanuman the monkey warrior defeats the demon king in the end. Is what makes this story so delightful is that we are front row and center preparing for Diwali. Many things don’t work out as planned such as the sparklers, the fairy lights don’t work, etc……in the end Diwali comes and brings the light to the darkness. In the back of the book are a couple of recipes to make Mango Lassi, a drink and Halwa a yummy sweet. Also there are 4 Rangoli patterns in the back of book for you to make your very own decorative patterns in the front of your house just like Deepak or enjoy drawing and coloring them on a piece of paper.
To find out more about this book and what languages it comes in please go to their website.
Click on this specific title and you will see a full description along with the languages it is translated into. The books are well thought out and have a very high quality about them.
