Something To Do
Let’s have our own Pool Party in Fiona’s honor! If this inflatable hippo from Bed, Bath, and Beyond doesn’t make you (or your kids) giggle with glee, we don’t know what will!
Hippo Habits 101-Do Hippos Really Swim?
“Depending on water level they walk or they swim,” said Dagmar Andres-Bruemmer of the Frankfurt Zoological Society. Except the swimming isn’t really swimming per se, she said. Rather, it’s a kind of gallop.
But that doesn’t mean they wouldn’t appreciate a pool party! According to National Geographic, Hippopotamuses love water, which is why the Greeks named them the “river horse.” Hippos spend up to 16 hours a day submerged in rivers and lakes to keep their massive bodies cool under the hot African sun. Hippos are graceful in water, good swimmers, and can hold their breath underwater for up to five minutes. However, they are often large enough to simply walk or stand on the lake floor, or lie in the shallows. Their eyes and nostrils are located high on their heads, which allows them to see and breathe while mostly submerged.
Hippos live in sub-Saharan Africa. They can only survive in areas with abundant water, though, so they live in areas with rivers and lakes. Hippos are amphibious animals and spend up to 16 hours per day in the water, according to National Geographic. The water keeps them cool in the African heat. They spend all day in the water and then hunt for food at night.
Fiona’s Fighting Spirit inspires Others
Just like the Cincinnati Zoo’s preemie hippo, Fiona, Calvin Underwood had a rough start in life. He was born early with multiple medical problems. And just like Fiona, a special care team cared for Calvin the first few months of his life. Darci Clark, RN: “He loved to be held, I remember holding him and calming him and just he loved to be up close.” Calvin was adopted by his foster family and is now a happy thriving 4-year-old, with loving parents and an older sister. Although he comes back often for care at Cincinnati Children’s, he made a special visit to reunite with a nurse who first held him, and he went to see Fiona, his favorite zoo baby.
Protect our Hippos!
According to the IUCN, the common hippo population isn’t endangered, but it is vulnerable, because their numbers have declined by 7 to 20 percent over the past 10 years, and likely will continue to decline. The IUCN estimates that there are between 125,000 and 148,000 common hippos remaining in the wild. Learn more here.

Aru Shah and the End of Time: A Diverse Middle Reader book that dives into Hindu Mythology
Aru Shah and the End of Time is one such diverse middle reader book! AND, if you enjoy books like Percy Jackson or Dasgupta’s Serpent Secret, then this is a series you will also enjoy.

Seventh-grader Aru Shah is a liar, but only because she has a wild imagination and is trying her hardest to fit in.
Stuck with a less-than-exciting life while her classmates are jetting off to family vacations in exotic locales, Aru grumbles about having to spend her autumn break at home, in the Museum of Ancient Indian Art and Culture, waiting for her mom to return from her latest archeological trip. Is it any wonder that Aru makes up stories about being royalty, traveling to Paris, and having a chauffeur?
One day, three schoolmates show up at Aru’s doorstep to catch her in a lie. They don’t believe her claim that the museum’s Lamp of Bharata is cursed, and they dare Aru to prove it. Just a quick light, Aru thinks. Then she can get herself out of this mess and never ever fib again. But lighting the lamp has dire consequences. She unwittingly frees the Sleeper, an ancient demon whose duty it is to awaken the God of Destruction.
Despite the danger, never in her wildest dreams did she imagine being the sole daughter of a Hindu god, the reincarnation of one of the esteemed Pandava siblings. When she lights a cursed lamp to impress the popular kids at school, Aru ends up letting out the terrible demon The Sleeper, who plans to end time. Everyone around her freezes, and now it’s up to Aru Shah and her other Pandava sister Mini to stop Time from ending.
With their pigeon pal Boo, who’s actually a cursed king, they have to find the three keys to the underworld, all the while learning that they are so much more than what they thought they were. And what these girls originally thought were just their weird quirks actually turn into their strengths that end up helping them on their quest. But stopping the end of time is not as easy as they thought it was going to be.
In Aru Shah and the End of Time: A Pandava Novel Book 1 , a young protagonist learns the hard way that the only way to stop the demon is to find the reincarnations of the five legendary Pandava brothers, protagonists of the Hindu epic poem, the Mahabharata, and journey through the Kingdom of Death. But how is one girl in Spider-Man pajamas supposed to do all that?
Aru Shah and the End of Time: A Pandava Novel Book 1
Best-selling author Rick Riordan introduces this adventure by Roshani Chokshi about twelve-year-old Aru Shah, who has a tendency to stretch the truth in order to fit in at school. While her classmates are jetting off to family vacations in exotic locales, she’ll be spending her autumn break at home, in the Museum of Ancient Indian Art and Culture, waiting for her mom to return from her latest archeological trip. Her classmates and beloved mother are frozen in time, and it’s up to Aru to save them. The only way to stop the demon is to find the reincarnations of the five legendary Pandava brothers, protagonists of the Hindu epic poem, the Mahabharata, and journey through the Kingdom of Death. But how is one girl in Spider-Man pajamas supposed to do all that?
Author Roshani Chokshi packs a punch with this exciting tale of modern Hindu mythology. Filled with humor, adventure, excitement, pop culture, wit, and lessons, the tale of Aru Shah and the Pandavas is sure to go down in the mythology books and will be a winner with young readers!

An Action-Packed Middle Reader Book -Secret Scouts and the Lost Leonardo
Remember the hilarious movie, the Goonies, came out in 1985?
If you recall, the movie was about a band of misfit kids from a small town who, in order to save a pair of brothers’ home, were determined to find an ancient buried pirate treasure. Even three decades later, the movie is still a winner.
That how I feel about the new middle reader book, Secret Scouts and the Lost Leonardo by Mr. and Mrs. Kind.
It’s like The Goonies meets The Da Vinci Code, and even the book cover has a Stranger Things feel to it!
About Secret Scouts and the Lost Leonardo
This incredible book trailer brings the whole story to life:
Tom, Lisa, Sophie, and Jack stumble across the find of a lifetime — Leonardo da Vinci’s codex full of sketches, writings, and calculations. Now they have a choice: do they sell it and become richer beyond their wildest dreams, or do they try to decode the journal and figure out what Leonardo was up to? Tom and Jack want to sell the book, but sisters Lisa and Sophie have other ideas. What they discover within the codex is the science behind time travel. But when they put the calculations to the test, they find out just how dangerous this secret can truly be.
Secret Scouts and the Lost Leonardo will be available on October 23, 2018. In the meantime, it is on pre-order from Amazon, Barnes & Noble, or IndieBound. Learn more at SecretScouts.com. For ages 10-16 but don’t worry, parents can read it too

Beautiful Picture Books that Address the Effects of Deforestation on Animals
Teaching children about environmental awareness issues can be challenging, especially when dealing with complex issues. Three new children’s picture books from Happy Fox Box introduce important environmental issues in a gentle fashion.
These books captured my heart immediately. Not because they are beautiful picture books, but because they share colorful stories of deforestation and how it affects Giant Pandas, Polar Bears, and Snowy Leopards. Illustrator/authors Xuan Loc Xuan and Khoe Lee provide absolutely stunning images filled with bold colors and movement.
Celebrating animals and other wildlife, The Lonely Polar Bear, Snowy: The Leopard of the High Mountains, and Giant: The Panda of the Enchanted Forest also come with an inspirational message.
Climate change, deforestation, and poaching are issues which are brought up, respectively, in a way that is subtle and educational. The books open up a conversation if the adult reader and child wish to further explore such themes. Otherwise, the books stand alone as action-packed and fantastical stories all the same.
ABOUT THE BOOKS
Snowy the Leopard of the High Mountains tells the compelling tale of a little cub who overcomes danger through friendship, patience, and courage. Snowy becomes separated from her mother as they run away from menacing fur hunters. Lost and lonely, the little leopard cub makes new forest friends who teach her all she needs to know to find her way back home.

This beautiful book teaches respect for animals and nature and the illustrations from Xuna Loc Xuan brings a whole spectrum of emotions to the table. In a kid-friendly way, Snowy addresses the issue of poaching and the damaging impact it has on the endangered snow leopard.
Giant: A Panda of the Enchanted Forest tells the story of Giant, a panda bear. Giant is lounging in the majestic Sichuan forest, chewing on his bamboo shoots. Suddenly a forest fire starts because people from the city are clear-burning the forest for development! Giant seeks help and tries to extinguish the fire, but everything seems lost. It will only be by the heroic sacrifices of Giant and his friends that the forest and its inhabitants are saved.

This lovely hardcover book addresses the topic of deforestation and the tragic impact it has on animals. This book cleverly shares this issue in a gentle, yet impactful way, encouraging young readers to work towards a better future for the giant panda.
In The Lonely Polar Bear , a little polar bear wakes up alone after a furious storm. With his mother nowhere in sight, he makes friends with a mysterious little girl and various animal companions. All of the friends come together in the magnificent polar sky. In the end, the little bear sits peacefully, enjoying a winter day lit up by beautiful northern lights.

Illustrated by the talented Vietnamese artist Koha Lee, this book is a whimsical story that subtly introduces the issue of climate change to young children.
Giant-the Panda of the Enchanted Forest, Snowy-a Leopard of the High Mountains, and The Lonely Polar Bear are some of the newest releases from Happy Fox Books; a publishing house dedicated to creating beautiful books for children that are as entertaining as they are educational.

Something To Do
What you need to know about Deforestation
Can you imagine Earth without forests? Here are some deforestation facts for kids that can be shared to raise their awareness about our environment:
13 million hectares of forest have been cleared for other uses or by a natural disaster. By the year 2030, we might only have 10% of our forests left… and if we don’t stop deforestation, they could all be gone in 100 years.
Agriculture is the leading cause of deforestation. We clear the land to raise livestock or to plant other crops that can be sold, such as sugar cane and palm oil. More: How Can We Stop Deforestation?
There are 5 major rainforests:
a. The Amazon in South America
b. The Congo in Central Africa
c. Southeast Asia
d. New Guinea
e. Madagascar
Are you curious why Rainforests are so important? TheWorldCounts.com explains why.
Deforestation and ALL Animals
Did you know that forests cover 31 percent of earth’s land surface and house a majority of the plants and animals found on earth?
It is estimated that these diverse ecosystems house 80 percent of the world’s terrestrial biodiversity. Rainforests have especially high species density, covering 2 percent of earth’s surface, but housing nearly 50 percent of all plant and animal species. But deforestation doesn’t just hurt animals indigenous to the Rainforests. Read more here.
THERE IS A SOLUTION
With education, people can be taught the value of forests and the importance of caring for them and all life on planet earth. Being educated means to gather all the facts before making a decision. Sites like OneTreePlanted.org EarthDay.org and the ArborDayFoundation.org are working tirelessly on “reforestation” to combat the deforestation.
Supporting these organizations (and others like them) and arming yourself with the facts I’ve given you will help you know how to make the right decision and be responsible for caring for the earth.

Weekend Links: A round-up of STEM and STEAM Books for Kids!
Providing books and activities for kids that support STEM and STEAM is a big deal these days.
But first, what is STEM and STEAM?
STEM: STEM is an educational curriculum that combines science, technology, engineering, and math. It is meant to be a comprehensive approach; instead of teaching each subject separately, educators aim to incorporate some or all elements of STEM into each project.
STEAM: Is the same as STEM, but STEAM inserts arts into the acronym for STEM (science, technology, engineering, ART and math).
Edweek.org has a great article on how exactly can teachers fit the arts into STEM programs and do justice for both STEM and STEAM.
In the meantime, I’ve come across a plethora of amazing books, activities and links that support BOTH. Here are my top picks for a round-up of STEM and STEAM Books for Kids!

Summer Reading with STEM Activity Books from QuartoKids
It’s a tough balance. We want them to be outside soaking up the sun’s vitamins, but we also want to keep their minds stimulated and active. And we all know, if given the choice, our youngsters would probably choose gaming over a book!
The good news is that science and research are revealing more and more how helpful video games can be in a child’s cognitive development. Minecraft, for instance, helps with creativity, sharing, innovating, continuous learning, problem-solving, craftsmanship, teamwork, interdependence, flexibility, storytelling…just to name a few. Plus kids love it.
Quarto Knows is the home for books ranging from cooking, crafting, pets, and art to automotive, military history, design, and much more.
So the gurus at Quarto Knows came up with the perfect solution. Pair Minecraft with STEM for an unstoppable force for fun and learning! Quarto Knows is the home for books ranging from cooking, crafting, pets, and art to automotive, military history, design, and much more.
Unofficial Minecraft STEM Lab for Kids:
Family Friendly Projects for Exploring Concepts in Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math (Lab Series). I love Quarto’s “Lab” series! These well-done books serve as a bridge between parents, their children and STEAM and STEM concepts.
In Unofficial Minecraft STEM Lab for Kids, you’ll find a collection of 48 creative projects that make learning science, technology, engineering, and math exciting for the whole family. Venture off on six action-packed Quests, each with four unique Labs that pair a hands-on activity with an in-game project.
But having this book, showing your kids how the skills they are learning inside the game are relevant in out-of-game experiences, is a wonderful opportunity for family bonding and for crafting and creativity. PLUS, authors John Miller and Chris Fornell Scott have recreated the delight of “quests” like in the game as well. Here’s a sample of the genius this book holds:
Quest 1: Pistons, Rails, and Redstone.-Kids and parents can create a solar telescope along with many more super-fun activities.
Quest 2: Construction Zone- Make glow-in-the-dark slime, grow pipe cleaner snowflakes, and carve a crystal ice castle.
And soooo much more!
Here’s another winner I had a chance to read from Quarto:
Clay Lab for Kids: 52 Projects to Make, Model, and Mold with Air-Dry, Polymer, and Homemade Clay by Cassie Stephens
Clay Lab for Kids, a new addition to Quarry’s Lab series, focuses on kid-friendly clays–air-dry, homemade, and polymer–that are safe and easy to use at home or in the classroom; no kiln required.
You may not think it, but this is an extremely important crafting medium. When creating with clay, kids are introduced to a wide range of cognitive and manual skills: they’ll work three-dimensionally; make figurative models; use their imaginations in making jewelry and toys; design with color; and decorate with paints. Read more about this amazing book on Quarto’s website here.
And lastly, I would be remiss if I didn’t mention…
Geology Lab for Kids by Garret Romaine
Rocks! Oh, how our family loves ROCKS. And in Geology Lab for Kids rock-lovers will find 52 simple, inexpensive, and fun experiments that explore the Earth’s surface, structure, and processes. This family-friendly guide explores the wonders of geology, such as the formation of crystals and fossils, the layers of the Earth’s crust, and how water shapes mountains, valleys, and canyons. There is no excuse for boredom with a year’s worth of captivating STEAM(Science, Technology, Engineering, Art & Math) activities.

In this book, you will learn:
How to identify the most common rocks and minerals
How to maintain and display your rock collection
How insects are trapped and preserved in amber
How geysers and volcanoes form and erupt
How layers of rock reveal a record of time
How to pan for gold like a real prospector
Geology is an exciting science that helps us understand the world we live in, and Geology Lab for Kids actively engages readers in simple, creative activities that reveal the larger world at work.
Three wonderful STEM and STEAM books that encourage kids to get their hands dirty and their brains out of “park.” Check out QuartoKids’ website for even more amazing books.
One More Thing
The much-anticipated sequel to JIAB intern, Hannah Rials’ runaway YA hit, Ascension. Book Two in the Ascension series is Clandestine and it’s already bringing in raves reviews.
“Gripping until the very end.” – Scott Reintgen, author of Nyxia
“Dark, surprising, and full of twists, the Ascension series is a delectable addition to vampire canon. Rials paints a rich and engrossing world of vampires, half-vampires witches– each with their own agenda. Cheyenne’s struggle to be free is one that every girl will recognize, and I rooted for her as she bristled against the roles cast for her by society. It’s the story of a girl yearning to come into her own powers, powers both frightening and beautiful.” ~Maggie Thrash, author of L.A. Times Book Prize nominee Honor Girl
Cheyenne Lane never believed it could come to this—imprisoned by her own family, who are plotting to overthrow the vampire Council. Ripped away from the happiness of her summer romance and friendship in New Orleans, Cheyenne is forced to begin her education at Clandestine, the secret Deuxsang University, one year early.
She is guarded constantly, separated from her best friend Anne, and desperate for any word from Eli and the witches. Meanwhile, her cousin Lilith has discovered that Cheyenne possesses all four vampiric abilities—unheard of for a Deuxsang—and intends to use her in the Ascending’s rebellious scheme.
At 17, Cheyenne finds herself the center of a centuries-old conspiracy involving the vampires, Deuxsang, and witches, and everyone is telling her who she should trust and what she should do. Her head is too full of voices and opinions, and it’s time for Cheyenne to make up her own mind.
Is she ready to step into the role she was made for? Who can she trust? Who is her friend and who is her enemy? Is she really a born leader? All questions that only she can answer. As the information and scenario gets more confusing, she knows she must listen to her intuition if she is going to shift the truth from all the lies.
Grab your copy of Clandestine HERE and enjoy FREE Shipping.

Weekend Links: A Roundup of Nelson Mandela Booklists
July 18 was Nelson Mandela International Day; a day launched in recognition of Nelson Mandela’s birthday on July 18, 2009, via the unanimous decision of the UN General Assembly. It was inspired by a call Nelson Mandela made a year earlier, for the next generation to take on the burden of leadership in addressing the world’s social injustices when he said: “It is in your hands now”. It is more than a celebration of “Madiba’s” life and legacy. It is a global movement to honor his life’s work and act to change the world for the better.
I can’t think of a better way to honor this great man than to share A Roundup of Nelson Mandela Booklists and Resources for Nelson Mandela International Day. Enjoy!
The man we knew as Nelson Mandela, president of South Africa from 1994-1999, was called by many names with different meanings. Only one of the names were given to him at birth, and others were given to him along the way. Some of the names we don’t know why he was given them, but some he earned and he lived into the meaning.
Read about in this great post from Multicultural Kid Blogs
Grab this Free downloadable Nelson Mandela poster from Simple Everyday Mom
I love this booklist from Globe Trottin Kids: “Mandela Day is a “Call for All” to change the world for the better. Designate 67 minutes of your time to make a difference in the lives of others.”
Every year on July 18th, MKB celebrates Nelson Mandela Day. Mandela is known globally as one of the world’s most famous peacemakers. He spent 67 years as a freedom fighter, as well as becoming the first black president of South Africa. He was a legendary man who broke down 50 years of segregation through apartheid. We honor his legacy everyday, however here are a few ideas for how to celebrate Nelson Mandela Day this year. We want to encourage fighting for human rights in your own communities every day, but especially on this special day.
Usborne Books has a gorgeous Nelson Mandela book as well:
The complete story of the life of Nelson Mandela: one of the most famous names in modern history. Includes insight into Mandela’s rural childhood, his time with the ANC, his fight against apartheid, his time undercover as ‘The Black Pimpernel’, the 27 years he spent in prison and finally his appointment as South Africa’s first black president. A moving story of how a country’s most wanted fugitive became its greatest leader. Includes internet links to recommended websites to find out more about Mandela’s life and times.

Did you know that 70% of all kids quit organized sports by the age of 13, with girls quitting at 6x the rate of boys?
Alison Foley, Boston College’s Women’s Head Soccer Coach, and Mia Wenjen, parenting blogger at PragmaticMom.com, help coaches — both parent volunteer and professional — crack the code of how to keep girls in sports. As a mother of two daughters who played a lot of sports, Mia provides personal accounts to illustrate issues discussed throughout the book. Alison, also a mother of a young female athlete, has hands-on advice from coaching young women professionally for more than two decades.
Volunteer parents and experienced coaches alike will find invaluable advice on creating a successful team that motivates girls to stay in sports beyond the middle school years. Twenty-two chapters cover major issues, including how to pick captains, the importance of growth mindset, issues around body image and puberty, as well as the challenges of coaching your own daughter.
In addition, fifteen professional coaches from a range of sports, including former Olympian athletes, give their advice on what girls need from a coach to allow them to flourish in sports, and most importantly, have fun. This is a hands-on manual to help coaches keep girls in sports! Go HERE to read more about this much-needed resource for parents and coaches.
