Announcing the Audiobook Edition of The Mystery Box!

In writing this novel, my goal was to symbolize how narrators “lure” readers into their stories and “abduct” us, put us through “torment,” and yet, like victims of the Stockholm syndrome, we are grateful.

Cover Reveal Party Coming!

I have SO MUCH going on, that I don’t always know when I’m coming or going! I can’t believe it’s almost time to unveil the cover of the second book in The Purgatorium Series, Gray’s Domain.

First a word about the title. If you’ve read The Purgatorium (and if you haven’t, click on the pic to see purchase links), you know that Dr. Hortense Gray operates a compound on an island off the coast of California where she and her adoring staff use experimental therapy to terrify their patients into fighting for their lives. Dr. Gray refers to herself as Prospero, a character from Shakespeare’s The Tempest, and she refers to the island as her domain. So there you go: the reason for the title.

Btw, the third and final book in the series is called The Calibans. 

Anyway, I’m going to have a party on Facebook  on Sunday, April 27th at 8:00 p.m. CST. Expect fun games and fantastic prizes. One prize will be the silver bracelet seventeen-year-old Daphne is given in the first book to represent both the bonds (of fear and guilt) she must overcome and the new bonds of friendship she fosters with the other characters.

Although this novel is not based on Greek mythology like my Gatekeeper’s Saga, because it’s so popular, Athena will give away one of her lockets. She’s relevant to this series because her words of wisdom in the locket are as important to Daphne as they are to Therese: “The most common way people give up their power is by believing they have none.” Inspired by Alice Walker (author of The Color Purple), this inscription motivates Therese to keep fighting against all odds.

The Gatekeeper’s Sons Cover Gets a Facelift

One of my associates recommended that I change the cover of The Gatekeeper’s Sons because the parents of my target audience might think it too racey. I immediately agreed. It was my first book and my first cover, and I didn’t know then what I know now.

So my lovely cover artist, Melinda VanLone, not only made it less racey, but she also used the same Hypnos and Thanatos that appear on my t-shirts!

So, without further ado, here is the new cover!

A bit about the Howeys (This is taken directly from the IndieRe Con website)…

Hugh Howey is an American author, known for his popular series Wool, which he independently published through Amazon’s Kindle Direct Publishing system. Howey was raised in Monroe, North Carolina and prior to publishing his books, he worked as a yacht captain, roofer, and audio technician.

He began the series in 2011, initially writing Wool as a stand-alone short story. His first book was initially published with a small press. After that, he decided to publish through KDP, because of the freedom of self-publishing. After the series grew in popularity, he began to write more entries for it. Howey began soliciting international rights in 2012, including signing a deal for Brazil. Film rights to the series were sold to 20th Century Fox, with Lionsgate also expressing interest.

In 2012, Howey signed a deal with Simon and Schuster to distribute Wool to book retailers across the US and Canada. The deal allowed Howey to continue to sell the book online exclusively. He notably turned down seven figure offers in favor of a mid-six figure sum, in return for maintaining e-book rights.

Hugh represents everything we value in self-publishing. An author who comes from relative obscurity, to write what he wants, publish the way he wants, and find success because of his talent, ingenuity, hard work and dedication. Which Logo Do You Like Better?

I’m playing around with my brand and my logo, trying to find a simpler image than the sword and shield I’ve been using on everything so far. I still want to keep the sword and shield, but I want a logo. So which do you like better? On the one hand, I like the sharp contrast of the first, but the second goes better with my established brand, and the marbling makes me think of a Greek palace.
