Out To the Coast

One of my favorite things to do is jump in the car & race the sun out to the coast to watch it set. The drive takes you through fields, then forest, then suddenly, you run out of land and you've reached the sea.

Sometimes we bring a sandwich picnic. A few months ago, at the very beginning of fall, we brought donuts from Blue Star. Today we just had thermoses of warm coffee from home (see: thermos selfie).

It was freezing cold, and we just barely made it in time for the most golden part of the golden hour. And now I'm back at home and warm but my toes are still frozen from salt-water creeping into my boots.

I'm always watching for something when I go. Watching the water, like I left my heart out there, sometime, maybe a long time ago. That's what everyone does at the ocean. We're watching and waiting for a monster, or a mermaid, or for something lost to come back.

Happy Halloween

Ghosts1

Some sketchbook ghosts seemed like a good thing for today!

Also good things for today:

- I Was a Teenage Werewolf (or, really, any song by The Cramps)

- Spider Baby !

- Wander the Beistle HQ with Heidi

- Hell's Bells/Silly Symphonies

- Caramel sauce (for apple slices, for just eating off the spoon)

- Put on your best Wednesday Addams dress (or Pugsley striped tee, if you prefer)

A Little Bear in Striped Trousers

Bbear1

I made this little bear for a new bebe.

I went into this with delusions that I'd make a beautiful, heirloom teddy bear -- old-fashioned and soft mohair and shiny glass eyes. But when I set to work, this funny little guy is who I ended up with.

Not exactly the perfect Winnie-the-pooh bear I'd imagined, but a bear nonetheless.

Bbear2

A bear with his own charms & his own striped trousers.

We just returned from London (and a side-trip to Paris) & there are things I want to share from the trip.
I also need to finish posting the last few Eleanor pieces.

More dispatches soon!

Apple Season

IMG_7708

is the best season.

I'm living honeycrisp apple to honeycrisp apple and the smell of woodsmoke hangs in the air and there are heaps of pumpkins at the grocery store and talk turns to ghosts and baked things and sweaters and the call of the woods gets so loud and around it all, that ambery light.

Is there a more enchanted month than October? The more I'm around, the more I find out that it's nearly everyone's favorite. And it's mine too.

Golden Hour Cat

Thinking about the Eleanor series inspiration...
I guess I know a little bit about being an indoor girl who hangs out with a cat all day.

Alistair

Alistair is Eleanor's other cat.
The three of them live together in their little apartment with drafty windows.

Alistair is gentle and shy and quick to steal the warmth from laps.

Claude

Back in Eleanor's world, this is her black cat, Claude.

Claude is a girl-cat, though her name has caused much confusion. Eleanor named her after Claudine, the troublemaker heroine of her favorite novels by Colette.

Claude is murcurial and clever and quick to steal unattended dinners.
