I Heart New York

It may be every writer's ritual to make it "to" or "in" The City. I am a southern girl, and I love my rural roots but I liiiiiiive for getaways, considering they are yoga and kickboxing for my mind. For as long as I know, the pace, the energy, the dream of New York has called me. All that and more is alive in the Big Apple and I was thrilled that this past weekend I was able to see it for myself.

You don't need me to tell you that seeing it for yourself is a-Must! From the airport, to the hotel, to the street, there was never a dull moment. As soon as I was on the shuttle van, I was peepin'. There were many sights that sparked ideas upon ideas. There were many conversations that did as well. It's a writer's paradise.

Saturday was sweet, but I was pretty bummed since all of my pictures from day one of the trip were lost. Things happen for a reason and although Friday's day and night in Times Square was pretty magical and I was hyped about what was captured, I knew I had to switch modes. I now had to capture the rest of the days through another lens: the memories from all three days, captured on camera or not, are in my heart.

Hey, it gives me a reason to keep coming back.

With a sprained knee, I got around Manhattan. On bus, on boat and by foot (slowly but surely)  I was able to see all the major landmarks that make up the state. This was a highlight for the movie-buff in me, but as a southern girl, I have a knack for focusing in on the simple things. Plenty of times I stopped to smell the concrete roses.

One of those "simple" things was nature itself. After a rainy Friday, Saturday was sunny and a beautiful day for touring the city sites. The wind, the only thing that relaxes me, was very cathartic. Who knew I could come to one of the busiest, brightest and loudest places in the world and MEDITATE. That was really one of the unexpected highlights.

To say it was an unforgettable weekend is an understatement. For me, it wasn't just a trip, but more like an interlude, an experience that I needed and want to continue.

I ask myself, what makes a city what it is? What is the main attraction? The people make New York.

As they say, home is where the heart is and I am definitely a Houston girl, but I amglad to have another home away from home.
Stay tuned...MW

Micole’s Take: Veronica Mars[image error]Photo Credit:  Warner Bros. Entertainment By Micole Williams, EM Entertainment columnist Before the TV dramas, Revenge and Pretty Little Liars, there was Veronica Mars.  Back in the day, I remember watching the go-getting, sandpaper-humored teenage PI, Neptune California’s very own Nancy Drew. Well now she is all grown up. The movie takes us into Mars’ […]

Nia Long: A True Urban Renaissance Woman in Film

Nia Long, one of Hollywoods' sweethearts, has been representing the modern renaissance woman for years! Take a scroll down our URW photo memory lane and read the latest movie review on Examiner.com, Nia Long stars in Tyler Perry’s, “Single Moms Club”.

Long plays May, an aspiring author, in the latest Tyler Perry Film.

Media Mogul, Jordan Armstrong, is all grown up and better than ever in the "The Best Man Holiday!"

In the original "The Best Man", Long plays a no-nonsense, television producer on the rise.

In "love jones", Long is a photographer with an eye for the inner city.

"Urban Renaissance Woman" blog salutes Nia Long for portraying women of color in diverse, creative and imperfectly perfect ways.

Saturday@SXSW - AUSTIN CITY unLIMITed: ChildishGambino, Snoop Dogg and a city of Brassy creativity!

Saturday@SXSW - AUSTIN CITY unLIMITed: ChildishGambino, Snoop Dogg and a city of Brassy creativity!
AUSTIN, Tex---If you're a filmmaker, music-lover and artsy type, you'd  probably understand how South by Southwest (SXSW) is a MUST-festival! I have wanted to check out the fast-growing Music, Film, Interactive event for years, especially when it was a bit more underground. Although that doesn't sound too unattainable, especially since I live in Texas, my schedule never allowed me to travel for any day of the two-week long celebration of all creative artforms. Even this year, I knew I would only be able to catch the last leg, if any part; but I figured, one day was well-worth it, even if it all adds up to just sight-seeing! Hey, writers are inspired by any and eveything. So, let Spring Break begin!

At the last minute, I looked up some of the events...managed to find three FREE stops: Music Gear Expo @theAustinConventionCenter, Renegade Craft Show @thePalmerEventsCenter and the Childish Gambino concert @the ButlerParkstage...Can't go wrong with free, right?
Thanks to these amazing artists for making music that gets you where you need to go...and back in the same day. Once there, I was singing my own tune...Rain, rain, go away, come again when I don't have to sit outside for the outdoor concert...That song really works. Thank God!

 @ Music Gear Expo

@ Renegade Craft Fair, I met a lot of neat and chic designers and reps. I photographed those who had a unique story to tell.

loved LaLoka's striking three-finger rings, stone accessories and the designer Gina Gleicher Allen!
R.Keen's designer from Oklahoma, Regina Waters had some awesome, art-filled handcrafted color-kick tribal pieces!

As they say, another man's trash is another man's treasure. I admire people like New Orleanian, David Bergeron that can make THIS out of other people's garbage. Bergeron Woodworks really works!!!
These are not just super cute bracelets, but each  were made from first generation college students at Threads:The Shine Project. As an educator, this really touched me and I got two to help the cause.

loved the enticing detailing of Nikki Jacoby's metalic pieces!
Yes, you read the title correctly; these pieces were formed from recycled skateboard pieces. I love my wooden diamond ring!
Caffeine fix, anyone?

Scored a dress made from recycled shirts. Peopleup.org is a group that turns "useless into useful".

the exotic, brassy finds @GreenolaStyle benefited women in poverty.
And these beautiful, beaded pieces from 31 Bits were made by recycled paper from designers in Northern Uganda to benefit women in poverty.

Remember these??? Yes, we drifted off the path to take advantage of a true throwback moment.

:) Loved the custom-made, bold-print boots and Azteca-style patterns by Teysha!
before selfies...

I had been looking for some earrings like the gold pair on the right for a while now! Tumbleweed(beedco) had a lot of classic, "perfect addition to any wardrobe" earrings! I know I am a jewelry junkie---didn't expect to get that at SXSW! Sweet surprise! The rain started back up again...but my stomach was grumbling more than the thunder, so yeah...had to check out this place right across the street from the outdoor park and craft exhibits.

Much better now...

Can you snoop out Snoop? If you look really closely, you will see Snoop Dogg in the red and black. Yes, child. I secured a bench, while waiting for the Childish Gambino concert to start. I'm too old for all that standing.
:)
@the Childish Gambino concert - my students would be soooo proud...I actually listened to their music.

All in all, got inspired, snagged some cool accessories, chatted with some down-to-earth designers with resourceful techniques and good causes, caught a snippet of Snoop Dogg - cameo style, enjoyed a Childish Gambino concert, and loved hanging out! Saturday was sweet!Thumbs up to 2014 SXSW!

PopShop - Houston Festival - an "Original" Way to Shop for the Holidays

Thrift store travelers, antique addicts, garage-sale and flea-market lovers, PopShop-Houston Festival is a MUST! The annual  event took place at Silver Street Studios this season and the talented vendors drew great crowds on both days! It was a totally different AND fun shopping experience for the holidays.

Being an accessory designer in one of my past lives, I truly appreciate those who create their own fashions/art or just really embrace their own style. So if the price is right, (and I am thrifty) I look forward to patronizing others every chance I get because it feels great to see your stuff worn with pride!

Right away, I found a striking, ornate ring made out of a button and talked to the designer as she was creating another with wire. Then across the way, I found SOOO many nifty vintage dresses. I loved how the owner of the particular online boutique had conjured up a "hula-hoop" dressing room...Customers like myself, have to try on EVERYTHING before buying and appreciate it. A bit nervous at first though, I was reassured that she had sturdy clothespins to secure the drapes. She was right, and everything worked out and I was able to take a trip back in time, as each piece had a story to tell. I picked the best dress to add to my collection of vintage wear and I am happy with both buys!
Overall, the weather was great! There was a food truck that seemed worth checking out and a whole lot of crafty eye-candy, far from ordinary finds (and not to mention art work that really spoke to the imagination.) If you missed the Houston event, check listings, because PopShop Festival may be traveling to a city  near you!
