American astronomer Edward Emerson Barnard discovered Barnard's star, a red dwarf in the constellation Ophiuchus at a distance of 5.96 light years and the fifth nearest to Earth after the Sun and the three stars in the system of Alpha Centauri; people observed the proper motion of 10.3 arcseconds per year, the largest yet for a star.
