"A long project is like a secret houseguest, hidden in your study, waiting to be fed and visited."

John Hollander (via theparisreview)
Or sometimes like a not so secret houseguest sprawled eternally on your couch in unwashed underpants, running up your cable bill with on demand porn, drinking all your beer, and assuring you it’ll only be for a few more days.

Note to the Universe: When I impulse buy an item like a Clay Adams single button lab counter off of Ebay, I would prefer that I not find disturbingly relevant words inexplicably scrawled upon said object’s underside.
How A Hollywood Stuntwoman Survived Her Brain Tumor
Jill Browns 2013 New Year’s Resolutions 1. Learn a foreign language. 2. Travel and explore. Florida doesn’t count. 3. Chill the F out. Be more patient. 4. Follow my dreams, even if it’s challenging. Break the golden handcuffs. 5. Eat cleaner. Häagen-Dazs being the exception.
Jill Brown and I have been running into each other at the same pool party for several years. But it took her having a brain tumor for me to find out that she’s a writer...

I’ve been think a lot about my mom a lot today so I thought I’d post a few thoughts. Looking back, I am amazed how much she had to deal with just me. I was a tad bit of a spaz, a terrible student and really kind of a loner as a kid but she went out of her way to help guide me.

informants."

Illustrations, A-4
These feel as though they must be illustrations for a storybook. For some reason they suggest to me an especially grim and surrealistically Russian version ofIt’s a Wonderful Life.

Hard to argue with uncle Kurt.
Best to just do as he says.
The secretive inventor of the laugh track machine
Working for CBS and later on his own in the 40s and 50s, sound engineer Charley Douglass perfected the laugh track technique, which was then called sweetening. His secret weapon was the laff box, a machine that you could use like a typewriter to produce the type and sequence of laughter you…
While the laugh track is easily the most insufferable single aspect of a form of entertainment that I find generally insufferable as a whole, I ce...
