Stephen Spender - The Room Above The Square

The light in the window seemed perpetual
When you stayed in the high room for me;
It glowed above the trees through leaves
Like my certainty.

The light is fallen and you are hidden
In sunbright peninsulas of the sword:
Torn like leaves through Europe is the peace
That through us flowed.

Now I climb up alone to the high room
Above the darkened square
Where among stones and roots, the other
Unshattered lovers are.

Collier Schorr was born in New York City in 1963. As part of the heady New York art world of the late ‘80s and early ‘90s, Schorr’s early work mined the vernacular of postmodernism to create photographs that toe the line between documentary and fiction. Often using her subjects allegorically, Schorr’s work navigates the auspices of identity politics to ask beguiling questions aboutthe nomenclature of selfhood.By introducing autobiographical referents and post-appropriation...

The work of Denis Dailleux, who has been living in Cairo for the past nine years, is a lasting tribute to the generosity of the Egyptian people he fell in love with on his first visit fifteen years ago, and Mother and Son, without a doubt, his most personal work. With great respect and sensitivity, he takes us into these families' inner sanctum, where a bodybuilder son's absolute love sounds like an ode to all mothers, with the power to move viewers the world over.

A Great Unrecorded History

EM Forster.jpg

"When I am with him, smoking or talking quietly ahead, or whatever it may be, I see, beyond my own happiness and intimacy, occasional glimpses of the happiness of 1000s of others whose names I shall never hear, and know that there is a great unrecorded history."

E. M. Forster (ed. M. Lago and P. N. Furbank),
Selected Letters of E. M. Forster I: 1879–1920
(London 1983), 269

Don't Forget About Me

Alice Boman - Don't Forget About Me

Directed & filmed by Julia Ringdahl

"Don't Forget About Me is about holding on to a fantasy. It’s happened to me a few times- I’ve been into someone, or the idea of someone, but I’ve known that it’s not gonna last or happen for various reasons. You know how it’s gonna go, but you still want to hold on to some kind of illusion, just a little bit longer. You stay in a dreamlike state, just to prolong the feeling. Dancing is a way for me to do that. To be in...

Carl Phillips - Blue

As through marble or the lining of
certain fish split open and scooped
clean, this is the blue vein
that rides, where the flesh is even
whiter than the rest of her, the splayed
thighs mother forgets, busy struggling
for command over bones: her own,
those of the chaise longue, all
equally uncooperative, and there’s
the wind, too. This is her hair, gone
from white to blue in the air.

This is the black, shot with blue, of my dark
daddy’s knuckles, that do not change, ever.
Which is to say they are...
