Cole Barash

Cole Barash (b.1987) is a visual artist based in Brooklyn, NY. Working in the mediums of digital, analog, and archival photography, Barash often focuses on the conversation of color and composition between two objects or moments. Well acquainted with international subcultures, Cole seeks “subjects where the boundaries are more open and not as seasoned”. Using an organic approach, his portraiture and still lifes became known for their candid and spontaneous sense of intimacy.

2020 marks the 10th anniversary of The National's celebrated breakthrough album High Violet. In2011, the 5-piece band, along with a horn section, performed a staggering and ornate session for KCRW. The emotional tension the band creates in a live setting is their calling card, and it's awarded them festival headlining slots and sold-out arenas around the world. This is when it all started.

This painting, which  identified as a self-portrait, was probably begun during December of 1911 in Neuilly, while he was exploring ideas for the controversial Nude Descending a Staircase, No. 2 of 1912. In Nude (Study), Sad Young Man on a Train his transitory though acute interest in Cubism is manifested in the subdued palette, emphasis on the flat surface of the picture plane, and in the subordination of representational fidelity to the demands of the abstract composition.

In late 1968 António de Oliveira Salazar suffered a severe stroke and was no longer able to function as Portugal’s Fascist strongman. I lived and photographed the people of Portugal from late 1967 to just about the time Salazar had his stroke.
