Max Richter - Woolf Works

Do site da Les Inrockuptibles:

Max Richter, c’est une série d’albums limpides (The Blue Notebooks, Songs From Before, Sleep…) et de BO parfaites (The Leftovers, Le Congrès, Black Mirror…).

I Am Not Your Negro

In his new film, director Raoul Peck envisions the book James Baldwin never finished - a radical narration about race in America, using the writer's original words. He draws upon James Baldwin's notes on the lives and assassinations of Medgar Evers, Malcolm X, and Martin Luther King Jr. to explore and bring a fresh and radical perspective to the current racial narrative in America.

"One of the best movies you are likely to see this year."
- Manohla Dargis, The New York Times

To Tell A Story

“Somebody dies,” says John Berger. “It’s not just a question of tact that one then says, well, perhaps it is possible to tell that story,” but “it’s because, after that death, one can read that life. The life becomes readable.” His interlocutor, a certain Susan Sontag, interjects: “A person who dies at 37 is not the same as a person who dies at 77.” True, he replies, “but it can be somebody who dies at 90. The life becomes readable to the storyteller, to the writer. Then she or he can begin...

Cookie Laughing

cookie.jpg

Ali Smith on Nan Goldin's 'Cookie Laughing':

First, it’s the delight of someone else’s helpless mirth. It’s one of the most infectious pictures of someone laughing I’ve ever seen. The moment I see it, it makes me laugh too. Then, it’s a really stunning portrait as well as a really stunning photograph. Its subject is the photographer’s friend, the wise, witty and anarchic writer and actress Cookie Mueller. The picture makes something communal happen, it shares the friendship. But the energy’...

Campanella

Liszt’s 'Campanella' (or, to give it its proper name, the sixth of the Grandes études de Paganini) is famously one of the most difficult pieces ever written for piano. But no one seems to have told Daniil Trifonov.

The nickname Campanella means 'little bell' – because the melody of the piece comes from Paganini's Second Violin Concerto, which features a handbell.

Attacca Quartet: NPR Music Tiny Desk Concert

Tom Huizenga | November 18, 2016 - Classical music observers say we're living in a golden age of string quartets. It's hard to disagree when you hear the vibrant young players in New York's Attacca Quartet.

They revere the old school, having recently completed a performance cycle of all 68 string quartets by Joseph Haydn, the man who invented the genre. They also hunger for the new, exploring the music of three living composers each year in a project called Recently Added.

One contemporary com...
