An Angel at my Table
From the National Portrait Gallery Facebook page:
Congratulations to Miriam Escofet, winner of the BP Portrait Award 2018 for An Angel at my Table, a portrait of her mother.
Judge, Rosie Millard said, ‘The crisp tablecloth and china are rendered so beautifully – and then you see that one of the plates and a winged sculpture on the table appear to be moving which adds a surreal quality to the portrait. It is also a very sensitive depiction of an elderly sitter.’
You can see the portrait, and...

Nicholas Cave times three.
You fell from the sky
Crash landed in a field
Near the river Adur
Flowers spring from the ground
Lambs burst from the wombs of their mothers
In a hole beneath the bridge
She convalesce, she fashioned masks of twigs and clay
You cried beneath the dripping trees
Ghost song lodged in the throat of a mermaid
With my voice
I am calling you
You're a young man waking
Covered in blood that is not yours
You're a woman in a yellow dress
Surrounded by a charm of hummingbirds
You're a young girl full of forbidden en...

Aimee Nezhukumatathil - The Two Times I Loved You The Most On A Farm
after Dorothea Grossman
It was your idea to teach me how to sleep
under the stars how to hold a gun how
to shoot it in the air and firework it
across the setting sun a silver dragonfly
with a singular purpose: to hunt
and snap its mouth around the sweetest bee—
pluck it right out of the air—
I didn’t know love could be so loud.
And once, the fields of soybean and mice
became ...
