Professor PERLMAN is sitting in his usual place, but his chair is turned out to face the garden. On his lap are proofs of his latest book. He is drinking. Three large citronella candles next to him keep the mosquitoes away.

 

ELIO comes into the room to say good night. His father puts away his manuscript with a toss and lights a cigarette – his last of the day - using one of the citronella candles.

A coisa mais antiga de que me lembro é dum quarto em frente do mar dentro do qual estava, poisada em cima duma mesa, uma maçã enorme e vermelha. Do brilho do mar e do vermelho da maçã erguia-se uma felicidade irrecusável, nua e inteira. Não era nada de fantástico, não era nada de imaginário: era a própria presença do real que eu descobria. Mais tarde a obra de outros artistas veio confirmar a objectividade do meu próprio olhar. Em Homero reconheci essa felicidade nua e inteira, esse esplendor...

Ólafur Arnalds Tiny Desk Concert

It's as if the pianos were haunted. Somewhere about midway through this Tiny Desk, as Icelandic composer Ólafur Arnalds performed on his electronic keyboard, two upright pianos were playing lilting melodies behind him, absent any performer at the keys. And yet these "ghosts," along with Ólafur's band of strings and percussion, put together some of the most beautiful music I've heard at the Tiny Desk, made all the more mysterious through its presentation.
