Chris Lowell began a career in street photography in 2005, inspired by the photographic styles of the early street photographers: Frank, Erwitt, Evans, Ronis, Cartier-Bresson. He documented urban street scenes across the world – from Paris to Marrakech, Florence to Port-au-Prince – always trying to evoke a sense of relatability and humanity in his subjects. Taking pictures with the same 35mm rangefinders as his influences, Lowell became quickly versed in the ability to shoot without...

That Friday Feeling

Guts - Kenke Corner

Directed by Catarina Limão. The beat-digging veteran whose crossfader has always oscillated between soul, funk, jazz, reggae and hip-hop offers his best scratch so far with the LP Philanthropiques: 14 homemade productions inspired by 29 years of wild digging, dusting and cutting. Here is “Kenke Corner”, a powerful hymn to Ghana’s highlife.

Antony Gormley - ANILINE DYE, 1996 - 2003

'Water-dispersed aniline dye became Gormley's favoured drawing medium at the beginning of the new millennium. Chemically-based, acrid and dangerous, the reddish tint of aniline is reminiscent of the colour in the final stage of alchemy known as rubedo or iosis (from the Greek root 'ios', meaning poison). The use of this potent substance continues his investigation into the effects and behaviour of different minerals and chemicals. Dropped on...

Toro y Moi: NPR Music Tiny Desk Concert

April 29, 2019 | Bobby Carter -- Chaz Bear, who performs as Toro y Moi, is going to do what he feels. In preparation for his Tiny Desk concert, we were given two possible sound scenarios: aim to recreate the heavily electronic and lustrous aura that birthed his latest LP, Outer Peace or strip away the bells and whistles for an acoustic performance. The game-time decision was the latter and fans were treated to brand new iterations of these songs.

Toro y Moi's discography conveys that same...

From Chloe Rosser's site:

Form, speaks of the human condition and our increasing alienation from our own bodies. In these photographs, what should be intimately familiar is transformed into an unfamiliar sculpture.

Photographed in this contorted fashion, the body becomes almost inhuman; it is a mindless mass of flesh, a growth. Although the figures are abstract they still retain many human qualities; foetal like poses, flecks of freckles and the subtle arc of the spine. The forms p...

“Reading is solitude,” Italo Calvino once said, embodying the inspiration behind this series. These temples of cultural worship gather communities, and yet the literary experience, and therefore the experience of a library, remains solitary. Giving groups of scholars and peers glimpses into the past, present and future of humanity, literature offers an unparalleled opportunity to explore one's self from within through the unique internal narrative that each reader develops. It is thi...
