Who Says You Can't Judge a Book By Its Cover?

Secret of joy Come on now, admit it.  This one just makes you want to read it and you've not even read the premise of this new book by the author of best-selling books SEE JANE DATE and LOVE YOU TO DEATH.   The Joy referred to here is a sister the protagonist never knew she had, the product of her father's affair, a secret he's kept until his deathbed, when he finally asks his daughter Rebecca to go track down her half-sister in a small town in Maine.

Questions of Trust

Last night I watched a very cheesy moving on Lifetime about a husband poisoning his wife, a sort of modern Gaslight.  I kept telling myself to change the channel but I couldn't.  Why, I kept asking myself, are women drawn to stories in which the villian is not a boogey-man from without, but an imposter-lover/husband/best friend?  Think of The Shining.  "Here's Johnny!"  And of course, this week at Fort Hood, the gunfire came from inside the military, but it sure as hell wasn't 'friendly...

As the mother of two teenagers, neither of which I've per...

As the mother of two teenagers, neither of which I've persuaded to read Jane Austen, Marilyn Brant's new novel seems made to order.  Kind of like a gateway drug to Austen herself, whose work I consider a marvelously contained world that allows us the illusion of control, even when we can't get it in this century.


Speaking of centuries, I'm afraid I'm mired in the last one, somewhere around the 80's.  Stole the photo of the book cover from Amazon rather than sort through a gazillion...

Going off my meds, and on a few other things as well

Okay, I'm departing from my light literary tone to go off on you.  Perhaps it has to do with weaning myself from my pain meds but I have NO patience. 


A pastor in my old home town of Phoenix/Tempe had a death prayer list and spoke fiercely about why Obama should die for his support of a woman's right to terminate her own pregnancy and for his health care agenda.  Here's a video clip of the news covering this man's speech from the pulpit of a Baptist church from CNN.  news video of...
