You Are to Blame For All That Befalls You

There has been a sentiment of late, that I've heard from people who would consider themselves nonreligious and not really spiritual. It is that all the things that happen to you in life you draw to yourself. For some reason, deep in your psyche, whether you are sabotaging yourself or doubting yourself or hating yourself, these feelings bring about the bad things that happen to you. If you're sick, it's because the negative thoughts within you bring out the poisons. If your house falls into a...

What I Really Think About Sex

I have posted some very strong-minded articles in regards to sex and sexual abuse. I've mentioned that I was sexually abused and rather than be a victim I've pursued a healthy mindset and not let the past or the perpetrator control me (I hope).

I've commented on how I am somewhat skeptical (and a bit disgusted) with the whole genetic sexual attraction thing, and though I could see a small percentage of people maybe truly just falling in love (or physically lusting after) their relative as...

Movie Review: Zombieland

Finding an interesting movie in the month or so before holiday season releases can be a bit of a challenge. I saw 9 a week ago and being the science fictional gal I am, when fellow writer Rhea Rose wanted to see a movie, we got it down to Where the Wild Things Are and Zombieland. For whatever reason, I decided that I'd rather see Zombieland.

We went to Silver City in Coquitlam, one of the most stupidly designed theaters, as parking lots go. It's like a maze and some rows blocked so you have...

The Disturbing Trend of Sexifying Children

There has been a disturbing trend for quite some time of demented mothers taking their children (usually girls but not exclusively) and turning them into little sex dolls. The places where they parade their sex doll children are called beauty pageants. It's pretty obvious how I already feel about beauty pageants and the objectification of women, but to do it to a child is really criminal.

JonBenet Ramsey may have been the most famous case. The 6-year-old beauty pageant queen (yes, queen) was...

Dracula's Descendant Brings New Tales

stoker-2L-book-areaFinally after a hundred-plus years there is another Dracula book, a sequel; Dracula: The Un-Dead. (Dutton Books, $26.95 USD) You might be wondering how this is significant as there have been many Dracula books and even more vampire books, a subgenre all of its own. Well this one is different, written supposedly by Bram Stoker's  great grandnephew, Dacre Stoker. In the family tree end of things this is Bram's brother's son's son's son.

Bram had a fair number of siblings (6) and it doesn't seem...

Movie Review: 9

Recovering from Thanksgiving meant that one day I did a lot of sleeping. I also went and saw the movie 9 playing in the local Dolphin Theatres, a 2-cinema venue that has no center section of seats but just right and left…oh, and no heat, but it's cheaper and close. I had seen a trailer for this animation and Tim Burton's name was involved so I thought it would be good. Of course, ole Tim hasn't batted 100. I tried to watch James and the Giant Peach (have and love the book) but I just kept...

Freedom of Speech:Shhh, They're Listening

Freedom of Speech. It's a big thing in democratic countries and we hold it like a torch to indicate how different we are from the regimes, the dictatorships and any place that silences writers by putting them in prisons, house arrest or just killing them. The pen is mightier than the sword and it's been feared by conquerors for a long time. And of course, those who win are those who write the history books.

But North America: Canada and the US, we're different. We truly have freedom of...

Spanking: Discipline or Abuse?

There is debate going on about whether spanking should be abolished and made a criminal offence. Disciplining a child will result in no physical contact (the other extreme is that some schools are banning hugging…WTF). CBC Radio One interviewed a couple of advocates (for and against spanking) earlier this week, which included a human rights advocate in Sweden. The woman (a lawyer I believe) gave the instance of a woman whose daughter often ran away from home. When the girl was brought in by...

Writing: VCon and Reviews

My story "The Boy Who Bled Rubies" came out in Don Juan and Men: Tales of Lust and Seduction   about a month ago. This is an anthology of homoerotic or gay fiction. I haven't had a chance to read all the stories but mine is one of the few that is true fantasy. Nancy Kilpatrick's falls into that category, but judging from the reviews, most of the stories are modern Don Juan's. Editor Caro Soles had said my story was quite different from the rest and though I write erotica, I am more a...

Writing: To Shine or Not to Shine

It's been a while since I posted anything on my own writing. Partly because I'm in a slow stage and partly because well, I guess because I've been plugging at one story for a bit and revisiting an old novel. Earlier this year I polished up the long running story (long running in that it took me 15 years to write) and sent it off to the Shine anthology being edited by Jetse de Vries in the Netherlands.

It's an intriguing anthology because the point is that the future is bright, not the...
